Aluminium plate was cladded to magnesium alloy plate by using the explosive welding. The bonding morphology and composition of the explosive cladding plate was inspected by SEM and EDS. There is a wave bonding at the interface between aluminum plate and magnesium alloy plate. Then ceramic coatings were directly prepared on the surface of aluminum and magnesium alloy by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) in the same solution and at the same time. The microstructure and composition of MAO coatings were studies by SEM and EDS. The corrosion and wear resistance of MAO coatings on the two sides of the clad plate were investigated by salt spray tests and friction-wear test. The results show that the MAO coating on the Al surface consists of Al, O and Si elements, while MAO coating on the Mg surface consists of Mg, O and Si elements. The corrosion resistance of MAO coating on the Al surface was better than that on Mg surface of the explosive clad plate. The MAO coatings both on the Al surface and on the Mg surface can obviously improve the wear resistance of substrate.

The coatings containing zirconia were produced on LY12 Aluminium alloy by micro-arc oxidation in K2ZrF6 and NaH2PO2 solution. The composition, structure, hardness, friction and wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the coating were studied by XRD, SEM, EDS, ball-on-disk friction tester and electrochemical analyzer, respectively. The results show that coating was composed of m-ZrO2 and t-ZrO2. There were a large amount of Zr and O and a little Al, P and K in the coating. The thickness of coating prepared for 3h was 168μm and the maximum value of the hardness was up to 16.75GPa. The friction and wear resistance and corrosion resistance were improved, compared with the LY12 aluminium alloy substrate.

The poor corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys become the bottleneck restricting its development. Based on micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technology and the characteristics of fluorocarbon coating the surface of magnesium alloy build a high corrosion protection system, namely: Based on micro-arc oxidation coating fluorocarbon coatings. The formation of the composite coating through the resistance to ageing test through the resistance to ageing test, acid and alkali experiment and salt spray test results show the excellent corrosion resistance performance. Among them, the resistance to salt spray test time can reach 1500 h, which breaks the bottleneck of magnesium alloy corrosion resistance of 1000 h.

In aluminate alkaline electrolyte the effect of aluminate on the microstructure and properties and the MAO(micro-arc oxidation) behavior of micro-arc oxide film of AZ91 magnesium alloy was studied. Transmission electron microscope(TEM), energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), X-ray diffraction(XRD), salt spray test and scanning electron microscope(SEM)were used to analyze and characterize the structure and properties of the film. The results show that the concentration of aluminate has an important effect on the tank voltage, corrosion resistance, surface morphology and phase structure of micro-arc oxidation film. The corrosion resistance and film quality of the film were increased first and then decreased, but the surface roughness decreased first and then increased with the increase of aluminate concentration from 5g/L to 30g/L. At our work, the concentration of 10g/L aluminate electrolyte is most favorable to the formation of micro-arc oxide film.

Abstract Magnesium, as one of the lightest metal structural materials, also has its advantages such as high specific strength, good electromagnetic shielding characteristics, good processability and easy recycling, so it has a wide application prospect. However, its poor insulation, corrosion resistance, wear resistance and other properties limited it to be an alloy that can be used in a large area. Therefore, how to improve the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of magnesium alloy is the key to promote the development of magnesium alloy field. This paper reviews the research progress of using magnetron sputtering technology to prepare ceramic composite film on the surface of magnesium alloy and briefly introduces the film corrosion resistance and wear resistance of the thin films. It analyzes the impact of metal transition layer, process parameters and other factors on structure and properties of metal / ceramic coatings and prospects for the development prospects of magnetron sputtering in the field of magnesium alloy surface protection.

In this study, ceramic coatings were prepared on the surface of TC4 titanium alloy by micro-arc oxidation (MAO). The morphology, element distribution and phase composition of MAO coatings were analyzed by SEM, EDS, XRD and other analytical methods. The effect of hexagonal boron nitride(h-BN) doping on wear resistance and corrosion resistance of micro-arc oxidation layer was studied. The results show that the coating is mainly composed of rutile TiO2, anatase TiO2 and a small amount of h-BN. Furthermore, the composite coating containing h-BN was less porous than particle-free coating. The test results show that h-BN doping slightly affects the hardness of the MAO coating, and it is helpful in improving the thickness, corrosion resistance and wear resistance of the coatings. When the amount of h-BN is 3 g/L, the corrosion current density of the coating is the smallest; When the addition of h-BN is 1.5 g/L, the friction coefficient of the coating is the smallest. The wear mechanism was adhesive wear, accompanied by slight abrasive wear.

Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings were synthesized on MB3 magnesium alloy substrate. Two different electrolyte (Ⅰ) and electrolyte (Ⅱ) were adopted, and the performance of ceramic coatings was compared. The morphology feature, phase composition, and chemical composition of the formed coatings were studied by metallographic microscope, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS), XRD, respectively. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was evaluated by salt spray test. The research results show that, the starting and terminal voltage are different during the oxidation process, they are 220V and 375V in the electrolyte (Ⅰ), and 150V and 270 V in electrolyte (Ⅱ). After MAO, The sample surface in electrolyte (Ⅰ) is light gray, and looks tender and smooth. The ceramic coatings obtained in electrolyte (Ⅱ) are relative rough and white in colour. But MAO coatings obtained in electrolyte (Ⅱ) has higher deposition rate. Salt spray test show the corrosion resistance of samples obtained in electrolyte (Ⅱ) are better than those in electrolyte (Ⅰ), which is related to the thickness of the MAO coatings.

Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) method was used for the surface modification of MB3 magnesium alloy. The morphology feature, phase composition, and chemical composition of the formed ceramic coatings were studied by metallographic microscope, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), XRD, respectively. Drop test has been applied to study the corrosion resistance of MB3 Mg alloy with and without micro-arc oxidation treatment. The present result indicates that, through MAO, ceramic coatings were in-situ fabricated on the surface of MB3 Mg alloy, the micro-arc oxidation coating is relatively dense and uniform, maximum thickness is more than 97μm. The dominant phase of the coating is spinal Mg2SiO4 (Forsterite) and dissociative MgO (Periclase). Drop test shows that after oxidation the corrosion resistance of MB3 Mg alloy is greatly improved.

Magnesium alloys are being used as structural components in industry because of their high strength to weight ratio. But their high electrochemical activity and poor corrosion resistance limited their applications. Therefore, surface modifications are needed for protection purpose. This paper studied the anodic micro-arc oxidation and electroless Ni-P plating surface modifications on AZ80 magnesium alloy. The SEM, XRD and EDS were used to characterize the surface coating. It shows that a micro-porous MgO layer with the pores size 5 – 20 μm was fabricated on the bare magnesium alloy. The nodule Ni-P deposition could be prepared on the out layer of MgO with Ni/P atomic ratio being 1.4. The pores in MgO layer could be sealed by the following Ni-P deposition. Therefore the corrosion resistance of the magnesium alloy could be further improved.
