DAST (4-N, N-dimethylamino-4′-N′-methyl stilbazolium tosylate) crystal has been grown by slope nucleation method (SNM) at different cooling rates (0.5°С/d and 0.1°С/d). The morphology of crystal growing surfaces was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and microscope. Different growth striations were found on the growth surfaces. The arrangements of crystal ions and cooling rate have a great influence on the crystal shape. The relationship between the DAST crystal molecular structure and the crystal shape was systematically studied by analyzing the growing surface morphology. Two-dimensional nucleation mechanism was found on growing faces with increasing supersaturation.

New method for characterization of coating microstructures and for evaluation of coating property by means of surface morphology has been proposed. In this paper, the distribution of shape and dimensions of splat was examined using quantitative analysis of scanning electron microscope images from the surface of spray pattern as well as the surface of coating. Results obtained in this study indicate that it is necessary to analyze the spray pattern as well as the surface morphology in order to estimate the coating property by means of the distribution of splat which composes the coating. Moreover, the splats, which are in the interface between the substrate and the coating, should have the same morphology as those of the coating surface. The relationship between splat morphology and the property of coatings was discussed.

Bonding between polycrystal alumina and sapphire with (0001), (10 1 ¯ 0), (11 2 ¯ 0), (1 1 ¯ 02) orientations is successfully achieved by growing aluminium borate whiskers in the joint. The morphology of the whiskers in the joint is characterised by (Scanning Electron Microscopy) SEM. The relationship between the growing direction of the aluminium borate whiskers and the orientation of the sapphire substrate is investigated. The effect of the growing direction of the aluminium borate whiskers on the mechanical properties of the joint is discussed. The results show that the whiskers on the sapphire with (10 1 ¯ 0) orientation grow perpendicular to the surface of the substrate while the whiskers show a random growth on the other substrates. It is found that there is an orientation relationship between the whiskers (220) and sapphire (10 1 ¯ 0) and the morphology of the whiskers has great influence on the mechanical properties of the joint. The joint between polycrystal alumina and sapphire with (10 1 ¯ 0) orientation exhibits the highest strength, which reaches 26 MPa.

This study examined and compared surface of human dentine after acidic etching with hydrogen peroxide, phosphoric acid liquid and gel. Surface demineralization of dentin is necessary for a strong bond of adhesive at dental surface. Split human teeth were used. After application of mentioned substances at dentin level measures of the contact angle and surface morphology were employed. Surface morphology was analyzed with the help of scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Liquid phosphoric acid yielded highest demineralization showing better hydrophobicity than the rest, thus having more contact surface. Surface roughness are less evident and formed surface micropores of 4 m remained open after wash and air dry providing better adhesive canalicular penetration and subsequent bond.

In this research we have isolated and characterized natural bentonite into montmorillonite nanoparticles.
