Double layer stirrup confined concrete columns use two layers of stirrup, inside and outside, to constrain the core concrete. In this paper, in order to analyze the effect of double layer stirrups on the axial compression characteristics of concrete square columns, to determine the strength and deformation characteristics of double layer stirrup confined concrete square columns, and to establish the bearing capacity calculation equation for double layer stirrup confined concrete square columns, we designed 16 specimens to conduct axial compression test, from which a series of test data were obtained for double layer stirrup confined concrete square columns. We built the bearing capacity calculation equation for double layer stirrup confined concrete components on the basis of analysis and study and compared the calculated values with the test ones, and these data fit well; therefore, the study can provide reference for design and application of double layer stirrup confined concrete square columns.

To investigate the axial compressive behavior of reinforced concrete columns with strong confinement, a total of five full-scale reinforced concrete columns with stirrup characteristic values in the range 0.22~0.47 and section dimension 600mm×600mm were tested under concentric compression loading. The test results indicated that all specimens failed in a similar way. The longitudinal bars buckled in compression; the peripheral stirrups bowed out and several stirrups fractured; the cover concrete in the mid-height section of specimens spalled seriously; however, the core concrete of specimens was not crushed. The axial compressive bearing capacity and deformation ability of reinforced concrete columns could be improved by strong confinement. When specimens reached the ultimate bearing capacity, the longitudinal reinforcement yielded and provided axial bearing capacity for specimens; the transverse reinforcement reached tensile yield strength and provided effective confinement for the core concrete.

In order to study the axial compression performance of the T-shaped multi-cavity concrete-filled steel tube shear wall, first, three specimens were designed to perform the axial compression test. Then three-dimensional finite element analysis by the ABAQUS software was used to obtain the axial bearing capacity of the shear wall with different parameters. According to the results of the finite element model, the computational diagram in the limit state was obtained. The diagram was simplified into the core concrete in the non-enhanced area that was not constrained by the steel tube and the core concrete in the enhanced area that was uniformly constrained by the steel tube. Finally, a new practical equation for calculating the axial bearing capacity of a multi-cavity concrete-filled steel tubular shear wall was deduced and proposed based on the theory of ultimate equilibrium. The calculation results of the proposed equation were in good agreement with the finite element results, and the proposed equation can be used in practical engineering design.

The influence on columns behaviors of slenderness ratio are analyzed, and the influence on columns’ anti-seismic behavior of axial compression ratio, stirrup ratio and steel form are analyzed through the test on bearing capacity and level load of low cycle reverse of steel reinforced high-strength concrete columns. The bearing capacity of the long columns reduces along with the slenderness ratio increasing and augments along with concrete strength increasing. Probability of suddenly destruct increases along with the column slenderness ratio augmenting through the test. In addition, anti-seismic behavior of columns are effected not only axial compression ratio, but also steel form. Axial compression coefficien of the steel reinforced high-strength concrete columns with different steel form may be adjusted, however, the influence of stirrup ratio is very little on anti-seismic behavior of columns.

Concrete-filled rectangular steel tube four sides restraint effect on the core concrete was weaker than the corner, which made the effect not significant. The paper studied a new kind of stiffening rib –PBL stiffener to strengthen restraint effect of concrete-filled rectangular steel tube , and evaluated its advantages compared with other stiffening ribs. 9 PBL stiffened concrete-filled rectangular steel tube columns under axial compressive load were tested. It also collected the test with other stiffened rids, such as straight ribs, binding bars, knee brace, steel reinforcement cage, steel bar stiffeners, saw tooth shaped stiffeners, stitching straight stiffeners and no rib concrete filled rectangular steel tube to compare. It evaluated increasing coefficient of bearing capacity by stiffening ribs. The results showed that: the PBL stiffeners and binding bar of concrete-filled rectangular steel tube bearing capacity was greater than other reinforcement measures by more than 20%; PBL stiffener could be a new prominent type of stiffener because of its excellent mechanical performance and simple construction.

An experimental study was made of the mechanical properties of large scale confined concrete subjected to the axial compression test. Eleven tied concrete columns and six plain concrete prisms were tested. In the test, each specimen had the same transverse reinforcement configuration, and similar volumetric ratio of lateral steel, while different size. The test results in this paper indicate that the size of the specimen has no obvious relationship with the ultimate strength, however, it does affect the post-peak ductility to some extent. As a supplement to the experimental study, a finite element method was adopted to imitate the mechanical behavior of the confined concrete under axial compression. The results of the imitation in this paper indicate the confinement mechanism of large scale specimens.

Axial compression experiments of four full-scale reinforced concrete columns of two groups were carried out. One group of three columns used high-strength steel with the yield strength of 1000MPa as reinforcement hoops, and the second group used the ordinary-strength steel with yield strength of 400MPa. The axial compressive performances between these two groups were assessed. Compared to the specimen using the ordinary-strength steel, the axial compressive bearing capacity of using the high strength steel dose not increase significantly, while the deformation ability increases greatly. The results also indicate that the stress redistributions of the hoops and the concrete sections are obvious, and long-lasting when specimens achieve the ultimate bearing capacity after the yield of the rebar and local damage of concrete materials, at this time the strain of the specimens developes a lot, especially stress - strain curves of speciments with high-strength hoop all show a wide and flat top.

Based on experimental research on plain concrete columns with high strength concrete core, the formula to predict the bearing capacity of concrete columns with high strength concrete core under axial compression loading was brought forward in previous paper, in order to verify the formula whether right, axial compression test including 3 concrete columns with high strength concrete core and 1 ordinary reinforced concrete column were completed, and the failure characteristic was analyzed additionally. According to experimental results, it can be shown that the failure modes of concrete columns with high strength concrete core are similar to that of ordinary reinforced concrete columns, however, the bearing capacity of concrete columns with high strength concrete core is significant higher compared with that of ordinary reinforced concrete column; the results of the bearing capacity obtained by the formula (2) was in good agreement with the experimental results.
