A series of experimental research results on the characteristic of diesel elastic-plate impingement spray using High Speed Photography camera are presented in this paper. The experiments were carried out in a constant volume chamber specially designed, which can hold a high ambiance pressure. The special fixed device was designed so that the elastic-plate can be fixed on the spray path, meanwhile the spray incident angle and height can be changed. The free jet spray and elastic-plate impingement spray was compared under the same experimental condition including different injection pressure and different background pressure. Experimental research showed that impingement spray droplets diffuse more quickly than free jet spray.

Currently, most of commercial needle-free jet injectors generate the liquid jet by a method called “driving object method” (DOM); however, the reliability and efficiency are still questioned. This paper proposes a new concept of jet generation method, known as “impact driven method” (IDM). A prototype of an IDM jet injector is designed, built, tested, and compared to a commercial device (Cool.click, Tigard, OR). Fundamental characteristics, i.e., the exit jet velocity and impact pressure, are measured. Jet injection processes are visualized both in air and in 20% polyacrylamide by high speed photography. In this study, from the prototype of the IDM jet injector, a maximum jet velocity of 400 m/s and impact peak pressure of 68 MPa can be obtained. It is clear that the IDM jet injector provides a double pulsed liquid jet, which is a major advantage over the commercial jet injector. Because, the first pulse gives a shorter erosion stage, and then, immediately the second pulse follows and provides a better penetration, wider lateral dispersion, and considerably less back splash. Hence, lower pain level and higher delivery efficiency should be achieved. It can be concluded that the IDM concept is highly feasible for implementation in real applications, either for human or animal injection. However, the control and accuracy of IDM still needs to be carefully investigated.

The use of cavitation impact is a practical method for improving the fatigue strength of metals in the same way as shot peening. In the case of peening using cavitation impact, cavitation is produced by a high-speed submerged water jet with cavitation, i.e., a cavitating jet. A cavitating jet in air was successfully generated by injecting a high-speed water jet into a low-speed water jet injected into air using a concentric nozzle. In order to investigate the various appearances of cavitating jets in air, an observation was carried out using high-speed photography and high-speed video recording. In this study, periodical shading of the cavitation cloud was observed and the frequency of the shading was found to be a function of the injection pressure of the low-speed water jet. Unsteadiness of the low-speed water jet, which is related to the periodical shading of the cloud, was also observed.

Poor cold start performance is one of the main factors restricting the application range of compression ignition engines. Stable flame generation in the cylinder is the prerequisite for the successful start of the engine. In order to explore ways to improve the cold start ability of the compression ignition engine, the ignition characteristics of diesel sprays at different injection pressures were studied in a constant volume combustion chamber. A high-speed photography technique was used to obtain the color images of the initial flames of diesel free sprays. And the yellow flame is introduced as the criterion for a successful flame generation. It was found that under moderate injection pressures, the reactant concentration and energy dissipation rate reached equilibrium. Under this condition, the duration of the blue flame is relatively stable, and it is most conducive to the generation of the yellow flame in the cylinder. The negative temperature coefficient phenomenon is also observed, and the temperature range in which this phenomenon occurs is identical with the change of injection pressure. A cold start strategy for the compression ignition engine is proposed by controlling the compression-end temperature in the cylinder to be higher than the threshold ignition temperature of diesel spray.

High speed photography using the Cranz-Schardin camera was performed to study the crack divergence and divergence angle in thermally tempered glass. A tempered 3.5 mm thick glass plate was used as a specimen. It was shown that two types of bifurcation and branching existed as the crack divergence. The divergence angle was smaller than the value calculated from the principle of optimal design and showed an acute angle.
