The mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP)/waste tire dust (WTD)/kenaf (KNF) composites with and without 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) coupling agent were investigated. The composites were prepared using a Thermo Haake Polydrive internal mixer, where different KNF loading (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 phr) were used. The results revealed that the tensile modulus increased with increasing KNF loading but tensile strength and elongation at break were found decreased. Composites with APTES give higher tensile strength and modulus but lower elongation at break than composites without APTES. The presence of APTES enhanced the interfacial adhesion between PP/WTD matrices and KNF which result in higher tensile strength and modulus of the composites. These findings were supported by the morphological study of the tensile fractured surfaces of the composites.

Double block copolymers of polyethersulfone (PES)/polycarbonate (PC) were used as a compatibilizer for a blend of PES/PC. The morphology, thermal properties, mechanical properties, etc. of the resulting ternary blend systems were investigated. The addition of the compatibizer improved the compatibility between PES and PC. It was found that the interfacial adhesion was enhanced; the size of the dispersed phase was reduced. This resulted in an improvement of elongation at break and tenacity of PES/PC blends, while the tensile modulus slightly increased, and tensile strength was almost constant.

In this study, effect of PBS content on physical properties of polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene succinate (PBS) blends was studied. The content of PBS was varied from 0 30 %wt. The blends were mixed using an internal mixer. The samples were prepared using a compression molding. It was shown that tensile strength and Youngs modulus of PLA/PBS blends were decreased with increasing PBS content from to 0 30 %wt. Nevertheless, elongation at break and impact strength of the blend were increased with increasing the amount of PBS up to 20 %wt. Polylactic acid grafted glycidyl methacrylate (PLA-g-GMA) was used as the compatibilizer in PLA/PBS/PLA-g-GMA blends. PLA-g-GMA was shown to improve interfacial adhesion between PLA and PBS. With the addition of PLA-g-GMA, mechanical properties of PLA/PBS blend were improved. The preparation of cassava pulp (CP) to be used as filler in PLA/PBS blends and PLA/PBS/PLA-g-GMA blends was studied. Effect of CP content on mechanical properties CP/PLA/PBS composites was studied. PLA-g-GMA was also used as compatibilizer in CP/PLA/PBS composites. The mechanical properties of CP/PLA/PBS composites were improved with the addition of PLA-g-GMA as well.

Sawdust/recycled high density polyethylene (rHDPE) composites were prepared and their mechanical properties, flammability and morphology were investigated. Sawdust was used at contents of 30, 40 and 50 wt%. With increasing sawdust content, tensile strength and elongation at break of the composites decreased whereas tensile modulus increased. Flexural properties showed the same trend as tensile properties. Flammability of the composites enhanced with increasing sawdust content. Mechanical properties of alkali treated sawdust/rHDPE composites were higher than those of untreated sawdust/rHDPE composites at all sawdust contents. Moreover, alkali treatment improved flame retardancy of the composites. SEM micrographs showed that alkali treatment enhanced the interfacial adhesion between sawdust and rHDPE matrix.

In situ melt copolycondensation was proposed to prepare biodegradable copolyester nanocomposites based on degradable components poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA), rigid segments poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), and nanoparticles polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS). The morphologies and dispersions of two POSS nanoparticles (POSS-NH2 and POSS-PEG) in the copolyester PLABT matrix and their effects on the mechanical properties were investigated. The results demonstrated that the morphologies and dispersions of POSS-NH2 and POSS-PEG showed quite different characteristics. POSS-PEG took better dispersion in the PLABT, while POSS-NH2 had poor dispersions and formed crystalline microaggregates. Due to the good dispersion and strong interfacial adhesion of POSS-PEG with the matrix, the tensile strength and Young’s modulus were greatly improved from 6.4 and 9.6 MPa for neat PLABT up to 11.2 and 70.7 MPa for PLABT/POSS-PEG nanocomposite. Moreover, the incorporation of POSS-PEG could impart macromolecular chains good flexibility and improve the mobility of the chains, so the the elongation at break of PLABT/POSS-PEG nanocomposite dramatically increased from 190 to 350 % compared with neat PLABT.

Latex compounding which incorporates various types of clays as filler to the rubber can significantly give reinforcement in the rubber matrix when rubber/clay nanocomposites are formed, but the filler agglomerates. Thus, study was conducted by using Kaolin clay as the filler in the rubber nanocomposites with silane coupling agent to functionalize the surface of the filler. This study was done in order to investigate the mechanical properties of various functionalized Kaolin in latex nanocomposites, to prepare various ratios of Kaolin to rubber, and to characterize mechanical, thermal and morphological properties of the Kaolin in latex nanocomposites. To achieve these, six types of silane coupling agents was used for Kaolin filler surface functionalization purpose during the filler’s incorporation in latex compounding. The optimized coupling agent, USi-7301 (?-chloropropyltrimetoxysilane) – with tensile strength value of 32.77 MPa, elongation at break value of 632.589 % and force at break value of 6.737 N – was used to further functionalize Kaolin filler in different ratios so as to achieve the optimum mechanical, thermal and morphological properties of the filler in the polymer matrix. Universal tensile machine was used to analyze the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites, while the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) were used to observe the morphological and thermal properties of the nanocomposites, respectively. The results showed that reducing the Total Solids Content (TSC) of Kaolin filler to 26 % somehow showed the optimized properties of the nanocomposites, giving 34.00 MPa tensile strength, 576.494 % elongation at break and 6.564 N force at break. Rough surface morphology was observed under SEM suggesting the occurrence of phase separation between the hydrophilic filler and the hydrophobic rubber matrix. In the DSC plot, sample with USi-7301 and with functionalized Kaolin filler 26 % TSC showed glass transition temperature shifted to lower region compared to normal nitrile rubber. The reinforcement of nanocomposites formed will not only enhance the properties of the nanocomposites, but is also economically feasible thus brings advantages to the industry.

Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) based on epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) and polypropylene (PP) were prepared in an internal mixer at 180°C. The effects of curing systems (i.e., sulfur and peroxide) on morphological, rheological, thermal and mechanical properties were studied. It is found that the sulfur cured TPVs show higher tensile strength, tear strength and elongation at break than those cured with the DCP systems. The rheological analysis indicates that TPVs cured with DCP system show lower apparent shear viscosity than those with sulfur system. SEM studies show that TPVs vulcanized with DCP system exhibit smaller and finely dispersed rubber domains, which provides it higher thermal stability than sulfur cured TPVs.

ABSTRACTMechanical properties (tensile modulus, tensile strength, elongation at break), thermal properties (T8' CTE, thermo-decomposition temperature, and rate of weight loss) and electrical properties of Problmlde 414 cured films have been determined. The mechanical properties of Probimide 414 thin films are highly dependent on the hard-bake temperature, hard-bake time, and purge gas, but not dependent on the level of the exposure energy or the presence of 1% Irganox 1010 (w/w) as a stabilizer. At a hard-bake temperature of 350ºC and a nitrogen purge rate of 15 SCFH, Probimide 414 films showed excellent retention of the mechanical properties during extended heat treatment.

Waste tire powder (WTP) was reclaimed mechanically in presence of a new composite additive which consists of reinforcing materials (RM) and toughening materials (TM), and the effects of technical parameters and additives were investigated. According to the orthogonal experiments and the range analysis, the final ranking of the significance of factors in tensile properties was determined to be as follows: TM content > curing temperature > sulfur content > TBBS content > RM content (for tensile strength) and sulfur content > curing temperature > TBBS content > TM content > RM content (for elongation at break). The optimal conditions for tensile strength and elongation at break were determined respectively. Tensile strength and elongation at break tended to decrease after an initial ascent with the RM content increased. An apparent ascent of elongation at break was observed as TM content increases. Tensile strength increased first, and then decreased.

PLGA (polylactic-co-glycolic acid) is an ideal material for biodegradable medical suture. PLGA fibers and fiber membrane was prepared by using electrostatic spinning, the surface morphology of PLGA fibers and fiber membranes was observed by SEM, and mechanical properties of PLGA fibers and fiber membranes were tested by self-developed micro-force loading system. Experimental results were found that the arrangement of PLGA fibers due to surface tension and friction between fibers was the main factor on mechanical properties of PLGA fibers. The tensile strength of two fibers in winding arrangement was 1.81 times of fibers arranged in parallel at a given number. The tensile strength of three fibers in winding arrangement was 1.25 times of fibers arranged in parallel at a given number. For 80.6 % porosity and 1.028-5.764 mm width PLGA fiber membranes, tensile strength was 1.06-1.47 MPa, tensile modulus was 9.14-13.6 MPa, and elongation at break was 10.8 % to 11.6 %. The tension of fiber membranes increased with its width.

High speed sintering (HSS) is an additive manufacturing (AM) process that creates parts by sintering powder particles using inkjet and infrared (IR) lamp technology rather than laser systems employed in laser sintering (LS). This research investigated the effects of machine parameters (lamp speed, bed temperature) and the addition of fumed silica flow agent on the tensile properties of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) parts processed using HSS. The results showed improved elongation at break (EaB) values by a factor of more than 2× compared to reported values for LS of the same TPE. At constant parameters, improved tensile strength and tensile modulus were observed with the addition of flow agent into the sintering mixture.
