With computer technology contentiously improving, parametric design has been playing much more important role in architectural design. Parametric Design, as a design method and a tool arisen with information age, is the most recent trend in architecture. Parametric design tool improvements and wide application options has undoubtedly motivated building structural design and brought up more complex architectural works, especially on nonlinear structures. Sports buildings, due to their special functions, it calls for structures that provide large span. Therefore, there are many technical requirements in the design of sports buildings. Traditionally, sports building form is limited by structural calculation. With improved computer technology, especially parametric design tools, sports building forms become more diversified, complex and nonlinear. Parametric design helps with the dynamic interaction between architects and heir work, consequently achieves quick design and dynamic adjustments of complex structures, simplifies the design process, and finally provides more efficient and direct design method for sports building design.

The design of Sarangan Lake resort done by the needs of tourist on its area, unfullfield of tourist needs on accommodation facilities, increasing number of uncare building towards negative impact to the environment, so the purpose from this design is to get a building design that could provide accommodation facilities to the tourist of Sarangan Lake, with the design that concern about environment. The design issue is how ecological architect can be applied into design of Sarangan Lake resort. Design method is using architectural design, started from initial idea, preliminary understanding of architecture about the planned object, research and problem formulation, literature study as substantial reference, data analysis and information, analysis of general and specific approach towards designed object and formulation of design concept, analysis of design concept approach which more specific about the to-be-designed object, and architectural design transformation and preliminary design as well. The result is a design concept of resort hotel facilities as lodging accommodations by applying the characteristic of the ecological architect to the building design.

In this study, a design methodology based on prototyping is proposed. This design methodology is intended to enhance the functionality of the test, differentiating it from the prototyping that is being conducted in conventional architectural design projects. The objective of this study is to explore reference cases that enable designers to maximize the utilization of both digital models and physical models that have been currently used in architectural designs. Also, it is to explore the complementary roles and effects of digital models and physical models. Smart Building Envelopes (SBEs) are one of challenging topics in architectural design and requires innovative design process included tests and risk management. A conceptual prototyping-based model considering the topic is applied to the design studio (education environment in university). Designing SBEs is not difficult to conceive ideas, but it is impossible to “implement” using the conventional design method. Implementing SBEs requires to strengthen validities and improve responsibilities of ideas in the stages of architectural designs, with cutting-edge technologies and smart materials. The design methodology enables designers (represented by students) to apply materials and manufacturing methods using digital models (parametric design, simulation, BIM) and physical models, rather than representing vanity images that are considered simple science fiction.

The residential building is a critical factor to reflect the relations between human and natural environment, and it is required that the residential design is more flexible, healthier and more environmentally friendly and is capable of fully responding to the demands and changes in family life and harmonizing with the environment, as the time goes on and progresses, the concept of “Sustainable & Open Residence” (SOR) has been promoted and applied by many countries, also attracted considerable attentions in the process of the China's Housing Industrialization. The paper discusses how to achieve such the “Sustainability” and “Open” in residential design based on the author’s understanding on SOR under the current conditions in China, a architect should take the initiative to adopt a number of architectural design method to achieve the sustainability and open in residential building design.

Abstract This paper describes the construction of an information flow that combines parametric modelling and genetic algorithms to optimise both the total weight of a structured steel roof and the shape of its surface to maximise the generation potential of photovoltaic energy. Through the systematisation of a design process using genetic algorithms integrated with generative design as an architectural design method, architects can work with problem parameterisation, going one step further than the mere formal proposition of solutions. As a result, we present a process in which there is a dialogical relationship between the architect and project in a continuous flow of information in the initial steps of the design process, guided by predefined optimisation objectives. Therefore, it is relevant to note that the designer accepts a reduced creative control over the final shape in favor of control over the core principles that constitute the optimisation algorithms. An approach that involved the designer in a process of post computational processing evaluations is also highlighted, giving him better support to discuss and analyze the design options.

Pre-project studies in modern building design in the historical and architectural urban environment is relevant to architects, as the city-planning requirements are systematically updated and complicated. A special attention is paid to the analysis of international documents, which formulate objective approaches to preservation of the unique architectural and artistic images of the urban environment. The purpose of this study is to concretize the list of research works for identification of the architectural design standards in the historical environment. The events and the standards are formulated on the basis of the structural analysis of the Russian and foreign experience of modern design organizations. A number of proposed analytical studies include the data systematization in terms of town planning regulations established by cultural heritage sites, photographic recording of landscape, graphical analysis of streets in order to identify common patterns in the historical development of the architectural environment and styles. On the examples of Achinskaya Street in Tomsk and a new construction project the process of developing such standards is clearly demonstrated. The presented design method can be used in the design and estimate documentation for new building construction within the protection zones, development control zones and will meet the requirements for the Federal Law of Cultural Heritage Objects (Historical and Cultural Monuments) of Peoples of the Russian Federation.

This article discusses the potential of introducing sustainability in the architectural design method so that building solutions can contribute to sustainable development. Sustainability has introduced a new pattern to the architecture practice, which involves important modifications in the teaching of architecture in what regards to the design methods to students but also practitioners, in order to provide more comfort for present and future generations. In the design phases of the architectural design, the subject of the three pillars of sustainability—economic, social and environmental factors—are not always considered by the architect in the decision-making process. The topic involves actions that will influence the overall performance of the building throughout its lifecycle. Sustainability has not been a priority in the training of the architect. The existing tools, Sustainability Assessment and Certification Systems, although adequate to evaluate the sustainability component of a building, do not prove to be the most appropriate tool to support architects during the design process. Therefore, the implementation and evaluation of strategies that integrate the sustainability principles need to be included in the early stages of the architectural design method. In addition to collecting data through literature review, a survey was conducted among 217 architects and architecture students in order to access the need for a tool that supports architects in the issue of sustainability. The results concluded that, although all the respondents agree about what concerns the implementation of sustainability principles in the architectural design method, only few respondents guarantee that these principles are implemented by means of a rigorous evaluation. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to identify a set of guidelines that can help architects to change the current approach of architectural practice towards more sustainable strategies in building design. This means the introduction, implementation and evaluation of sustainability principles in different phases of the architectural design method. The proposal stresses the main strategies that need to be considered in each phase of the architectural project and defines a level of recommendation in each guideline that allows the architect to evaluate the implementation of sustainability.
