Numerical Study on Aerodynamic Design of Hypersonic Vehicle Forebody

The lift forebody configuration of a small hypersonic vehicle is designed by using the wedge angle method in this paper. The lift forebody created has been optimized by the simplex method with a penalty function. The aerodynamic characteristics of the forebody optimized are investigated by numerical method. The research results show that the wedge angle method is a high efficient way to generate the lift forebody of the hypersonic vehicle; On the design mach number, there is pressure leaking between the upper and lower surface of lift forebody, which leads to lateral flow in the spanwise on the precompression plane, and which create the unhomogeneity of inlet flow field; Adding side skirts on the both sides, which can reduce the lateral flow on the forebody's precompression plane, it can raise the forebody lift.

This paper presents the results of a numerical study of the aerodynamic shape of the Rocket Plane LEX. The Rocket Plane is a main part of the Modular Airplane System – MAS; a special vehicle devoted to suborbital tourist flights. The Rocket Plane was designed for subsonic and supersonic flight conditions. Therefore, the impact of the Mach number should be considered during the aerodynamic design of the Rocket Plane. The main goal of the investigation was to determine the sensitivity of the Rocket Plane aerodynamic characteristics to the Mach number during the optimisation of the LEX geometry. The paper includes results of the optimisation process for Mach number from the range Ma = 0.5 to Ma = 2.5. These results reveal that the aerodynamic characteristics of models optimised for the subsonic and transonic regime of Mach numbers (up to Ma = 1) were also improved for the supersonic speed regime. However, in the case of models optimised for the supersonic flight regime the aerodynamic characteristics in subsonic flight regime, are inferior compared to the model before the optimisation process.

This paper concentrates on the design, analysis, and development of fixed-wing hand launch unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). This flight can able to carry the payloads of 0.8. The design process involves the conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design. This paper involves the investigation of the aerodynamic characteristics over the wing to enhance the aerodynamic design of the UAV. This analysis includes estimating the best gliding ratio to increase the flight mission and attain the maximum altitude. This simulation will be performed for subsonic flow with Mach number 0.04202(14.3m/s). The manufacturing of the UAV is done using composite materials like glass fiber of both (1mm and 2 mm) thickness, carbon fiber of 2mm, and carbon rod is used for connecting the empennage to the fuselage. The detailed design has been done in CATIA V5 and the analysis of the wing has been done using XFLR, ANSYS (fluent).

Indirect passive solar crop dryers have the potential to considerably reduce the losses that presently occur during drying of some crops in many parts of the “developing” world. The performance so far achieved with such dryers has, however, not proved to be very satisfactory. If this performance is to be improved it is necessary to have an accurate computer model of such dryers to assist in their design. An important element is any dryer model is an accurate equation for the convective heat transfer in the collector. To assist in the development of such an equation, an experimental and numerical study of the collector heat transfer has been undertaken. In the experimental study, the collector was simulated by a 1m long by 1m wide channel with a gap of 4 cm between the upper and lower surfaces. The lower surface of the channel consisted of an aluminium plate with an electrical heating element, simulating the solar heating, bonded to its lower surface. Air was blown through this channel at a measured rate and the temperature profiles at various points along the channel were measured using a shielded thermocouple probe. Local heat transfer rates were then determined from these measured temperature profiles. In the numerical study, the parabolic forms of the governing equations were solved by a forward-marching finite difference procedure.

ABSTRACT Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) are believed by many to be the future of aerial strike/reconnaissance capability. This belief led to the design of the UCAV 1303 by Boeing Phantom Works and the US Airforce Lab in the late 1990s. Because UCAV 1303 is expected to take on a wide range of mission roles that are risky for human pilots, it needs to be highly adaptable. Geometric morphing can provide such adaptability and allow the UCAV 1303 to optimise its physical feature mid-flight to increase the lift-to-drag ratio, manoeuvrability, cruise distance, flight control, etc. This capability is extremely beneficial since it will enable the UCAV to reconcile conflicting mission requirements (e.g. loiter and dash within the same mission). In this study, we conduct several modifications to the wing geometry of UCAV 1303 via Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to analyse its aerodynamic characteristics produced by a range of different wing geometric morphs. Here we look into two specific geometric morphing wings: linear twists on one of the wings and linear twists at both wings (wash-in and washout). A baseline CFD of the UCAV 1303 without any wing morphing is validated against published wind tunnel data, before proceeding to simulate morphing wing configurations. The results show that geometric morphing wing influences the UCAV-1303 aerodynamic characteristics significantly, improving the coefficient of lift and drag, pitching moment and rolling moment.

This paper presents the classical approximation scheme to investigate the velocity profile associated with the Falkner–Skan boundary-layer problem. Solution of the boundary-layer equation is obtained for a model problem in which the flow field contains a substantial region of strongly reversed flow. The problem investigates the flow of a viscous liquid past a semi-infinite flat plate against an adverse pressure gradient. Optimized results for the dimensionless velocity profiles of reverse wedge flow are presented graphically for different values of wedge angle parameter β taken from 0≤β≤2.5. Weighted residual method (WRM) is used for determining the solution of nonlinear boundary-layer problem. Finally, for β=0 the results of WRM are compared with the results of homotopy perturbation method.

A numerical study that was made in a three-dimensional flow, carried out in a modified centrifugal compressor, having vaned diffuser stage, used as an automotive turbo charger. In order to study the influence of vaned diffuser meridional outlet section with a different width ratio of the modified centrifugal compressor. Moreover, the performance of the centrifugal compressor was dependent on the proper matching between the compressor impeller along the vaned diffuser. The aerodynamic characteristics were compared under different meridional width ratio. In addition, the velocity vectors in diffuser flow passages, and the secondary flow in cross-section near the outlet of diffuser were analysed in detail under different meridional width ratio. Another aim of this research was to study and simulate the effect of vaned diffuser on the performance of a centrifugal compressor. The simulation was undertaken using commercial software so-called ANSYS CFX, to predict numerically the performance charachteristics. The results were generated from CFD and were analysed for better understanding of the fluid flow through centrifugal compressor stage and as a result of the minimum width ratio the flow in diffuser passage tends to be uniformity. Moreover, the backflow and vortex near the pressure surface disappear, and the vortex and detachment near the suction surface decrease. Conclusively, it was observed that the efficiency was increased and both the total pressure ratio and static pressure for minimum width ratio are increased.
