In this paper, a 4-node reduced integration shell element, which has high accuracy and computing efficiency, is adopted to simulate the mega members and nodes. A precise nonlinear response analysis method of steel mega members and nodes in steel mega-frame structures based on 3-D shell element model is given. The parallel computation technique in MSC.Marc is explored to the method to reduce the computing time. The reliability of the method and the efficiency of the parallel computation technique in reducing the computing time are checked by examples.

Pounding of two adjacent structures is one of the factors that cause damage and hinder sustainable use of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures under strong ground motion excitations. This study developed a pounding analysis method with a refined beam-column element in order to solve the pounding problem between two RC frame structures. The analysis method combines the fiber beam-column element model with the element sections discretized into concrete and longitudinal rebar fibers, the Hertz-damp contact element model to describe the pounding between beam-column elements, and the method to integrate the pounding force into the system dynamic equilibrium equation. The pounding can be considered either at the level between the story slab to slab or at the level between story slab to mid-column. The application of the proposed method in pounding analyses to provide a rational seismic separation gap between two adjacent RC frame structures is finally conducted to increase their safety and sustainability under strong earthquakes.

AbstractCoastal highway bridges are usually supported by pile foundations that are submerged in water and embedded into saturated soils. Such sites have been reported susceptible to scour hazard and probably liquefied under strong earthquakes. Existing studies on seismic response analyses of such bridges often ignore the influence of water-induced hydrodynamic effect. This study assesses quantitative impacts of the hydrodynamic effect on seismic responses of coastal highway bridges under scour and liquefaction potential in a probabilistic manner. A coupled soil-bridge finite element model that represents typical coastal highway bridges is excited by two sets of ground motion records that represent two seismic design levels (i.e., low versus high in terms of 10%-50 years versus 2%-50 years). Modeled by the added mass method, the hydrodynamic effect on responses of bridge key components including the bearing deformation, column curvature, and pile curvature is systematically quantified for scenarios with and without liquefaction across different scour depths. It is found that the influence of hydrodynamic effect becomes more noticeable with the increase of scour depths. Nevertheless, it has minor influence on the bearing deformation and column curvature (i.e., percentage changes of the responses are within 5%), regardless of the liquefiable or nonliquefiable scenario under the low or high seismic design level. As for the pile curvature, the hydrodynamic effect under the low seismic design level may remarkably increase the response by as large as 15%–20%, whereas under the high seismic design level, it has ignorable influence on the pile curvature.

In this paper, a fast Fourier transforms (FFT)-based spectral analysis method (SAM) is proposed for the dynamic analysis of spectral element models subjected to the non-zero initial conditions. To evaluate the proposed SAM, the spectral element model for the simply supported Bernoulli-Euler beam is considered as an example problem. The accuracy of the proposed SAM is evaluated by comparing the dynamic responses obtained by SAM with the exact analytical solutions.

Establish the finite element model for high precision grinding machine which takes joint surface into consideration and then carrys out the static and dynamic analysis of the grinder. After the static analysis, modal analysis and harmonic response analysis, the displacement deformation, stress, natural frequency and vibration mode could be found, which also helps find the weak links out. The improvement scheme which aims to increase the stiffness and precision of the whole machine has proposed to efficiently optimize the grinder. And the first natural frequency of the optimized grinder has increased by 68.19%.

The effect of the residual stresses and strains is one of the most important parameter in the structure integrity assessment. A finite element model is constructed in order to simulate the multi passes mismatched submerged arc welding SAW which used in the welded tensile test specimen. Sequentially coupled thermal mechanical analysis is done by using ABAQUS software for calculating the residual stresses and distortion due to welding. In this work, three main issues were studied in order to reduce the time consuming during welding simulation which is the major problem in the computational welding mechanics (CWM). The first issue is dimensionality of the problem. Both two- and three-dimensional models are constructed for the same analysis type, shell element for two dimension simulation shows good performance comparing with brick element. The conventional method to calculate residual stress is by using implicit scheme that because of the welding and cooling time is relatively high. In this work, the author shows that it could use the explicit scheme with the mass scaling technique, and time consuming during the analysis will be reduced very efficiently. By using this new technique, it will be possible to simulate relatively large three dimensional structures.

There is a potential for major damage to the pipelines crossing faults, therefore the strain-based design method is essential for the design of buried pipelines. Finite element models based on soil springs which are able to accurately predict pipelines’ responses to such faulting are recommended by some international guidelines. In this paper, a comparative analysis was carried out among four widely used models (beam element model; shell element model with fixed boundary; shell element model with beam coupled; shell element model with equivalent boundary) in two aspects: differences of results and the efficiency of calculation. The results show that the maximum and minimum strains of models coincided with each other under allowable strain and the calculation efficiency of beam element model was the highest. Besides, the shell element model with beam coupled or equivalent boundary provided the reasonable results and the calculation efficiency of them were higher than the one with fixed boundary. In addition, shell element model with beam coupled had a broader applicability.

This paper proposes a rapid dynamic analysis method for microgyroscope using system vibration modes to solve the problems concerning to the computing time in the performance analysis of microgyroscope. The results of eigenvalue solution are employed to construct the state space model. The response of the microgyros cope can be reconstructed as a response superposition of the vibration modes, and then the system equation is decoupled into an uncoupled equation. The dynamic response of the microgyroscope can be calculated by a simple superposition.

Abstract. To make vehicles more reliable and efficient, many researchers have tried to improve the rotor performance. Although certain achievements have been made, the previous finite element model did not reflect the historical process of the motor rotor well, and the rigidity and mass in rotor optimization are less discussed together. This paper firstly introduces fractional order into a finite element model to conduct the harmonic response analysis. Then, we propose an optimal design framework of a rotor. In the framework, objective functions of rigidity and mass are defined, and the relationship between high rigidity and the first-order frequency is discussed. In order to find the optimal values, an accelerated optimization method based on response surface (ARSO) is proposed to find the suitable design parameters of rigidity and mass. Because the higher rigidity can be transformed into the first-order natural frequency by objective function, this paper analyzes the first-order frequency and mass of a motor rotor in the experiment. The results proved that not only is the fractional model effective, but also the ARSO can optimize the rotor structure. The first-order natural frequency of asynchronous motor rotor is increased by 11.2 %, and the mass is reduced by 13.8 %, which can realize high stiffness and light mass of asynchronous motor rotors.
