Hydrothermal method and sol-gel process were used to synthesize multiferroic BiFeO3 ceramics. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, vickers diamond indenter and three-point bending method were used to investigate the effects of methods on the phase structure, microstructures and mechanical properties. Cold isostatic pressing on the ceramics with two different loads (10 MPa, 200 MPa) was used to illustrate the influence of pressure in mechanical properties. The results show that all samples are crystallized in the perovskite phase. A few small traces of impurity are observed at a 2θ of ~28 o, which are found to be those of Bi2Fe4O9. The SEM images depict that samples prepared by sol-gel process are more uniform and the grain size is slightly larger than that of hydrothermal processed samples. The investigations on the hardness and flexural strength demonstrate the ceramics prepared by hydrothermal method have better mechanical properties than that of sol-gel process, and the mechanical properties can be obviously enhanced by increasing pressure.

Multiferroic BiFeO3 powders were synthesized by two methods: sol-gel process and hydrothermal method. The synthesized powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (SEM) and particle size distribution analysis. The results obtained by XRD, which is consistent with 86-1518 JCPDS card, show that powders prepared by hydrothermal method are composed of the single phase with the trigonal structure (perovskite-type). It can be found by particle size distribution analysis that the particle size of the samples prepared by sol-gel process is finer and more uniform than that of the samples synthesized by the hydrothermal method. The SEM images of samples depicts that the synthesized BiFeO3 powders are united and the average grain size of hydrothermal processed samples is significantly large as compared to the sol-gel derived sample.

Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 films were fabricated with a 0.05 M solution by a sol-gel process at temperatures between 550 and 650 °C. Analysis by x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the films annealed at 650 °C showed pure perovskite phase, tetragonal structure, and columnar grains with an average grain size of 150 nm. Electrical measurements performed on the films annealed at 650 °C showed two dielectric peaks in the dielectric constant–temperature curve, a remnant polarization of 1.4 μC/cm2, a coercive field of 18.3 kV/cm, and good insulating property. The measured pyroelectric coefficient for the films annealed at 650 °C was larger than 3.1 × 10−4 C/m2K at the temperatures ranging from 10 to 26 °C and reached the maximum value of 4.1 × 10−4 C/m2K at 16 °C. The excellent pyroelectric property rendered the Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 films annealed at 650 °C promising for uncooled infrared detectors and thermal imaging applications.

In this paper, perovskite LaFeO3 nanoparticles were synthesised by a sol-gel method. Then, polypyrrole (PPy)/LaFeO3 nanocomposites were prepared by a simple in situ chemical polymerization method. By means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the microstructure of PPy/LaFeO3 nanocomposites was characterized. The XRD patterns indicated that LaFeO3 nanoparticles have a perovskite phase with orthorhombic structure, and incorporation of PPy did not change the crystalline structure of LaFeO3. The PPy was evenly dispersed on the surface of LaFeO3 particles, which was endorsed by FTIR spectral analyses. And SEM images indicate that the PPy was evenly dispersed on the surface of LaFeO3 particles without apparent agglomeration. And we found that the nanocomposites exhibited a higher response to CO gas.

Barium zirconate titanate Ba(Ti1-yZry)O3 (BZT, y = 0.02, 0.07, 0.09, 0.12, 0.15) ceramics have been prepared by sol–gel process. All the BZTx ceramics exhibited perovskite phase detected by X-ray diffraction, and the diffraction peaks shift to lower angle with increasing the content of Zr. Dielectric susceptibilities are up to 15500, and tunability up to 74.9% under electric field 6.8 kV/cm at 100 Hz.

Zn2SiO4:Eu3+, Dy3+ phosphors have been prepared through the sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric and ddifferential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), FT-IR spectra and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize the resulting phosphors. The results of XRD indicated that the phosphors crystallized completely at 1000oC. In Zn2SiO4:Eu3+,Dy3+ phosphors, the Eu3+ and Dy3+ show their characteristic red(613nm, 5D0-7F2), blue (481nm, 4F9/2–6H15/2) and yellow (577nm, 4F9/2–6H13/2) emissions.

The ZnO/TiO2 composite films were deposited over glass using spin coating technique by sol-gel process. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were used to modify the ZnO/TiO2 films successfully in this paper. The structure and composition of the ZnO/TiO2 composite and SWNTs doped ZnO/TiO2 composite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The morphology of samples was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The photocatalytic activity was investigated by photocatalytic degradation of aqueous methyl orange under ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The UV-vis absorption spectra of the ZnO/TiO2 films and SWNTs doped ZnO/TiO2 films in the wavelength region 200~800 nm were obtained. The results indicate that the SWNTs addition can decrease the grain size of ZnO/TiO2, which can enhance the photocatalytic activity. UV-vis absorption spectra of SWNTs-ZnO/TiO2 showed obvious blue shifts compared with ZnO/TiO2. The optimal amount of doping SWNTs is 1% according to this research. The enhanced mechanism of the SWNTs for the photocatalytic activity in ZnO/TiO2 films was analyzed in this article.

La-Nd co-doped barium hexaferrites, Ba0.7(LamNdn)0.3Fe12O19 (D-BaM), were successfully prepared by sol-gel method. PANI / D-BaM composites were synthesized by in-situ polymerization in solution. The structure, morphology and properties of samples have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), four-probe conductivity tester and vector network analyzer. The XRD patterns showed that the crystal structure of all the samples exist as M-type phases. The SEM images revealed that the particles presented a hexagonal platelet-like morphology. The magnetic properties could be improved by substitutions of La and Nd ions. The saturation magnetization (Ms) and coercive force (Hc) increased with the change of La / Nd ratio to the maximum at La / Nd = 3:1. The doped particles have also been embedded in conductive PANI to prepare electromagnetic materials, and the conductivity kept on the order of 10-2. The microwave absorbing properties of composites at 30 MHz-6 GHz improved obviously, the peak value of reflection loss could reach-7.5 dB.

ABSTRACTNd substituted bismuth titanate Bi4-xNdxTi3O12 were synthesized by sol-gel process and thin films were deposited on Pt substrate (Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si) by spin coating. Thin films, characterized by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, shows complete solid solution up to the composition x < 1. Initial results indicate that the ferroelectric polarization increases with increasing Nd content in the film with 2Pr = 50μC/cm2 for x = 0.46, which may have application in non-volatile ferroelectric memory devices.
