Durable Superhydrophobic Silica Aerogel Coating from Hydrophobic Gel Synthesis

Silica aerogel is a nanostructured porous solid material. It has a low bulk density, low thermal conductivity and can be hydrophobic. In this work, hydrophobic silica gel, a material used to form aerogel, is used instead of its powder form to avoid ultrafine air particles pollution. It is used to surface modified materials to make the materials superhydrophobic and still withstand physical abrasion that ordinary aerogel would not able to do. The superhydrophobic silica aerogel coating was designed by mixing the hydrophobic gel with DOW CORNING® 2405 resin as binder and varying DOWSIL™ Z-6137 silane and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The coating is characterized by the static contact angles (CA) and abrasion test. Scanning electron micrographs of different coating compositions were investigated. Results show that the hydrophobic gel mixed with resin and Z-6137 silane have contact angle >179º. Superhydrophobic silica aerogel coating can be utilized as material coatings for glass, fiber, polymer, etc.

Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) is extensively used in the conservation of stone-built cultural heritage, which is often subjected to water-induced degradation processes. The goal of this study was to produce and study a TEOS-based material with the ability to repel liquid water. A sol solution of TEOS and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyl triethoxysilane (FAS) was prepared and deposited on marble. The static contact angles (CAs) of water drops on the coated marble surface were >170° and the sliding angles (SA) were <5°, suggesting that superhydrophobicity and water repellency were achieved on the surface of the synthesized TEOS-based coating. FTIR and SEM-EDS were employed to characterize the produced coating. The latter offered good protection against water penetration by capillarity, reducing the breathability of marble only by a small extent and with practically no effect on its aesthetic appearance. The durability of the coating was evaluated through various tests that provided very promising results. Finally, the versatility of the method was demonstrated as the TEOS-based coating was successfully deposited onto glass, brass, wood, silicon, paper and silk, which obtained extreme wetting properties.

Alignment of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been studied in details for the past decades. In this paper, we examine the presence of single wall carbon nanotubes on experimental microfluidic systems during streaming potential measurements. The PMMA surface modified by CNTs has been characterized by high resolution scanning electron microscope (SEM), contact angles and streaming potential measurements. Preliminary results demonstrate clearly the effect of CNTs on microfluidic experiments in terms of streaming potentials.

The surface treatment of carbon fibers (CFs) was carried out using a self-synthesized sizing agent. The effects of sizing agent on the surface of CFs and the interface properties of CF/polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) composites were mainly studied. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and static contact angle were used to compare and study the CFs before and after the surface treatment, including surface morphology, surface chemical element composition, and wettability of the surface. The influence of sizing agent on the mechanical properties of CF/PMMA resin composite interface was investigated. The results show that after sizing treatment, the CF surface O/C value increased by 35.1% and the contact angles of CF and resin decreased by 16.2%. The interfacial shear strength and interlayer shear strength increased by 12.6%.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most suitable materials for 3D printing. Blending with nanoparticles improves some of its properties, broadening its application possibilities. The article presents a study of composite PLA matrix filaments with added unmodified and lignin/polymerised lignin surface-modified nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC). The influence of untreated and surface-modified NFC on morphological, mechanical, technological, infrared spectroscopic, and dynamic mechanical properties was evaluated for different groups of samples. As determined by the stereo and scanning electron microscopy, the unmodified and surface-modified NFCs with lignin and polymerised lignin were present in the form of plate-shaped agglomerates. The addition of NFC slightly reduced the filaments’ tensile strength, stretchability, and ability to absorb energy, while in contrast, the initial modulus slightly improved. By adding NFC to the PLA matrix, the bending storage modulus (E’) decreased slightly at lower temperatures, especially in the PLA samples with 3 wt% and 5 wt% NFC. When NFC was modified with lignin and polymerised lignin, an increase in E’ was noticed, especially in the glassy state.

This investigation of morphology-wetting links was performed using a biomimetic approach. Three natural leaves’ surfaces were studied: two bamboo varieties and Ginkgo Biloba. Multiscale surface topographies were analyzed by SEM observations, FFT, and Gaussian filtering. A PDMS replicating protocol of natural surfaces was proposed in order to study the purely morphological contribution to wetting. High static contact angles, close to 135∘, were measured on PDMS replicated surfaces. Compared to flat PDMS, the increase in static contact angle due to purely morphological contribution was around 20∘. Such an increase in contact angle was obtained despite loss of the nanometric scale during the replication process. Moreover, a significant decrease of the hysteresis contact angle was measured on PDMS replicas. The value of the contact angle hysteresis moved from 40∘ for flat PDMS to less than 10∘ for textured replicated surfaces. The wetting behavior of multiscale textured surfaces was then studied in the frame of the Wenzel and Cassie–Baxter models. Whereas the classical laws made it possible to describe the wetting behavior of the ginkgo biloba replications, a hierarchical model was developed to depict the wetting behavior of both bamboo species.

Bromodesmus catrionae n. gen., n. sp. (type species), B. militaris n. sp., B. riparius n. sp. and B. rufus n. sp. are described. The new genus is characterized by greatly reduced paranota and a gonopod telopodite expanded at the distal end into a posteriorly concave hood fringed with teeth; the hood partly protects a long, curved, acutely pointed solenomerite. Male leg setation in the type species of six Tasmanian dalodesmid genera is briefly discussed and illustrated with scanning electron micrographs. The sphaerotrichome shaft is sharply pointed in Atrophotergum; gently tapered in Dasystigma, Lissodesmus and Tasmanodesmus; expanded at the tip in Bromodesmus; and entirely absent in Gasterogramma. Tips of the setae forming the dense ventral brush on male podomeres are gently tapered in Dasystigma and Lissodesmus, truncated in Gasterogramma, expanded in Bromodesmus and forked in Tasmanodesmus.

Scanning electron-micrographs have shown the covering of microvilli on the surface of the redia of Parorchis acanthus. In the contracted state the elongated microvilli with bulbous extremities seen in the surface grooves may be the result of compression. The surface of the epidermis of the cercaria is smooth on a large area of the ventral surface and lattice-like with microvilli, laterally, anteriorly, dorsally and on the tail. AbstractWe present new information on the parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) of aphids infesting cotton, tobacco, citrus, and cereal agroecosystems in southeastern Europe. Nineteen species are keyed and illustrated with scanning electron micrographs and line drawings. The aphidiines presented in this work have been identified from 18 aphid taxa. Furthermore, 96 original parasitoid–aphid–plant associations are presented. Cotton, tobacco, and citrus agroecosystems are connected through aphids and their parasitoids, whereas cereal agroecosystems represent a separate group of associations.

The surfaces of flocculent and nonflocculent yeast cells have been examined by electron microscopy. Nonextractive preparative procedures for scanning electron microscopy allow comparison in which sharp or softened images of surface details (scars, etc.) are the criteria for relative abundance of flocculum material. Asexually flocculent budding-yeast cells cannot be distinguished from nonflocculent budding-yeast cells in scanning electron micrographs because the scar details of both are well resolved, being hard and sharp. On the other hand, flocculent fission-yeast cells are readily distinguished from nonflocculent cells because fission scars are mostly soft or obscured on flocculent cells, but sharp on nonflocculent cells. Sexually and asexually flocculent fission-yeast cells cannot be distinguished from one another as both are heavily clad in "mucilaginous" or "hairy" coverings. Examination of lightly extracted and heavily extracted flocculent fission-yeast cells by transmission electron microscopy provides micrographs consistent with the scanning electron micrographs.Key words: flocculation, budding yeast, fission yeast, scanning, transmission.

Although Aphidiinae parasitoids have been used as agents for biocontrol of alfalfa aphids for more than half a century and have been the subject of numerous ecological investigations, there is an evident lack of systematic studies on the parasitoids of aphids infesting alfalfa in Europe. Here we present an original and up-dated key for identification of both native and invasive Aphidiinae parasitoids attacking aphids that feed on alfalfa in Europe. In total, 20 species are keyed and illustrated with scanning electron micrographs and line drawings.
