The wettability of reinforcing fillers such as glass and carbon fibers is a significant factor influencing the mechanical properties of the composite. This study focuses on the effect of finishing glass fiber surfaces with different concentrations of oligophenylene sulfide sulfone solution on fiber wettability, which is determined by contact angle and wetting time. The Adam-Schütte method was chosen as a method for determining the contact angle. According to the study results a 1.5% solution of oligophenylene sulfide sulfone in N, N'-dimethylacetamide gives a contact angle of 45°, forming over time a thin film on the fiber surface, which indicates a sufficiently high sizing ability.

AbstractGrafting hyperbranched polyglycerols onto a carbon fiber surface is done in an attempt to improve the interfacial and impact properties between carbon fiber and epoxy resin. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and dynamic contact angle analysis were performed to characterize the carbon fibers. The TGA result shows that the mass fraction of the hyperbranched polyglycerols grafted onto the carbon fibers surface was 9.03%. The SEM results indicate that the hyperbranched polyglycerols have been grafted onto the carbon surface and that the surface roughness of the carbon fiber significantly increased. The XPS result indicates that oxygen-containing functional groups obviously increased after modification. Dynamic contact angle analysis indicates that the surface energy of modified carbon fibers increased significantly compared with the untreated ones. Results of the mechanical property tests show that interfacial shear strength increased from 59.86 to 80.16 MPa, interlaminar shear strength increased from 57.57 to 73.49 MPa and impact strength simultaneously increased from 2.52 to 3.52 J.

This article presents the results of a study of the hydrophilic properties of VMPS-10 84x4 glass filaments and SYT-49S 12K carbon tows. It has been found that the contact angle of glass and carbon fibers, which decreases after ion-plasma treatment, returns to its original values within 8 days. The capillarity values of both types of fibers increase irreversibly, but for carbon fibers, we observe a more significant change in this parameter. In the course of studying the microstructure of the surface of filler fibers before and after processing, it was found that all samples were uniformly covered with a film of an active lubricant with a microdispersed structure; however, for glass fibers, the size of the sizing particles increased during processing, and for carbon fibers, it decreased. In addition, thermophysical studies of the used reinforcing fillers were carried out, and it was found that during the ion-plasma modification, the erosion of the sizing film occurred.

Experimental studies of the surface tension and the density were carried out by means of the maximum bubble pressure method and the dilatometric technique and next, they were compiled with the results of over 12 years of research of the liquid pure components, binary and multicomponent alloys, with the aim to create the SURDAT database of the Pb-free soldering materials. In the last years, a modification of SURDAT has been conducted. The new version, beside the earlier data of the physical properties, also contains such data as: the viscosity data, selected data of the mechanical and electrical properties, the DTA data and the meniscographic study results (contact angle, wetting time, wetting force and interfacial tension). Additionally, the data base of the heat properties, worked out at NIST (National Institute of Standard and Technology from Boulder in Colorado) has been implemented.

Sea level rise increases community risks from erosion, wave flooding, and tides. Current management typically protects existing development and infrastructure with coastal armoring. These practices ignore long-term impacts to public trust coastal recreation and natural ecosystems. This adaptation framework models physical responses to the public beach and private upland for each adaptation strategy over time, linking physical changes in widths to damages, economic costs, and benefits from beach recreation and nature using low-lying Imperial Beach, California, as a case study. Available coastal hazard models identified community vulnerabilities, and local risk communication engagement prioritized five adaptation approaches—armoring, nourishment, living shorelines, groins, and managed retreat. This framework innovates using replacement cost as a proxy for ecosystem services normally not valued and examines a managed retreat policy approach using a public buyout and rent-back option. Specific methods and economic values used in the analysis need more research and innovation, but the framework provides a scalable methodology to guide coastal adaptation planning everywhere. Case study results suggest that coastal armoring provides the least public benefits over time. Living shoreline approaches show greater public benefits, while managed retreat, implemented sooner, provides the best long-term adaptation strategy to protect community identity and public trust resources.

This is the presentation of the research carried out by the Faculty of Engineering at Universidad Nacional de Rosario on the use of pultruded Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) plates to increase the flexural strength of reinforced concrete beams.Pultruded plates are the type of elements made of composite materials which are most widely used for this kind of strengthening. Although around the world the material used for these plates is carbon fibers, its high cost prevents its widespread use in our country.One of the aims of our research program is, precisely, to verify whether it is possible to substitute such plates for significantly cheaper glass fiber elements manufactured in Argentina. The test results have proved that this alternative is feasible.What's more, the greater thickness of the glass fiber plates allows the use of additional anchor bolts. These bolts provide the system with post-critical resistance and ductility-characteristics which are absolutely necessary, for example, in structures in seismic areas.

In this article, (NH4)2TiF6, SrNO3 and H3BO3 were used as raw materials to prepare the precursor solution with the ratio of AHFT/SN/BA=1:1:3. The thin films of SrTiO3 were fabricated on the functional silicon substrates (100) by self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with the liquid phase deposition (LPD). This article also studied the effects of wet state and the deposition temperature of the precursor solution before and after the functionalization of silicon substrate on the thin film growth. The results indicated that after the immersion in OTS for 30min, the surface contact angle of the silicon substrate changed from 24.64° to 100.91°. The substrate appeared hydrophobic property and it was irradiated by UV light for 30min. Then the surface contact angle of the substrate decreased to 5.00°. The substrate appeared hydrophilicity. The concentration of the precursor solution was 0.025 mol/L, the deposition temperature was 40°C and the deposition time was 9h, which were all helpful to SrTiO3 crystallization. XRD and SEM were used to characterize the physical phase of thin film and surface morphology at 600 °C with annealing and heat retaining for 2h. The results indicated that the thin film prepared by the mono-crystal Si substrate was SrTiO3 thin film with better crystalline. On the crystal surfaces of (110), (100), (200) and (211), there appeared the obvious diffraction peaks. The SrTiO3 grains on the surface had the clear outline and were regular and long columnar crystals.

This paper presents the monitoring of resin flow during resin infusion process in the fabrication of glass fiber reinforced polymer GRP wind turbine blade (WTB). Epoxy type of resin was used as the matrix and its viscosity and gel time were determined in-house. Next, resin infusions were done to obtain the permeability of the glass fiber in different directions (longitudinal and transverse), given the specific number of layers. The fabrication of composite WTB by resin infusion was conducted with the introduction of 'moldless' setup, where both upper and lower skins are covered by flexible mould/vacuum bag without any rigid female mould. However, a wooden core is used and acts as an “inner” mould to obtain the wind turbine shape. The whole infusion process was video recorded and the flow front pattern was traced at certain time intervals to investigate the infused percentage area over time. Afterward, guided by the traces of flow patterns on grid and video observation, 3D models of resin infused at interval times are generated in a CAD software. From the models, the area infused was determined. Percentage of area infused over time was compared with the analytical plot based on Darcy's law. A good agreement was found between the experimental observation and the theoretical plot.

Personalized advertising is widely believed to be an effective persuasion strategy. A typical personalized advertising process consists of two phases: The message sender first “learns” the message receiver’s preferences, and then “matches” the message to that person according to his or her preferences. The present study argues that this process may be problematic because it assumes that an individual’s preferences are always stable (i.e., preferences remain the same over time) and extreme (i.e., preferences are highly polarized). Through a 2 (message type: personalized vs. nonpersonalized) × 2 (preference stability: high vs. low) × 2 (preference extremity: high vs. low) between-participants experiment ( N = 227), it is shown that the effectiveness of personalized advertising is moderated by preference stability and extremity. A new conceptualization of personalization is proposed based on the study results, and how the two phases of personalized advertising may be refined is highlighted.

The researchers in this study used a multiple baseline design across dyads to examine the effects of professional development with coaching to train general education teachers to use a simultaneous prompting procedure when teaching academic core content to students with autism and the effects of the procedure on the students’ outcomes. Three teacher–student dyads participated in the study. Results showed that (a) teachers acquired the ability to use the simultaneous prompting procedure with 100% accuracy, maintained the acquired teaching behaviors over time, and generalized them in teaching new academic content to their students; and (b) students acquired the targeted academic content, maintained it over time, and generalized it across different persons and settings. In addition, the students acquired instructive feedback stimuli added to instruction and maintained these over time as well. Last, both the opinions of the teachers and students about the social validity of the study were positive. Future research is needed to support these findings.
