In order to eliminate the out of round defect of grinding ball, an improvement measure is proposed. Firstly, the wear behavior and mechanism of the ball in different service conditions are obtained. Then, the root cause of grinding ball out of roundness is discussed. Finally, the corresponding improvement measures are put forward from the aspects of grinding ball material and heat treatment, so as to improve the microstructure and properties of grinding ball.

AbstractFrom the present study, vanadium additions up to 6.4% were added to a 14%Cr-3%C white iron, and the effect on the microstructure, hardness and abrasive wear were analysed. The experimental irons were melted in an open induction furnace and cast into sand moulds to obtain bars of 18, 25, and 37 mm thickness. The alloys were characterized by optical and electronic microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Bulk hardness was measured in the as-cast conditions and after a destabilization heat treatment at 900°C for 45 min. Abrasive wear resistance tests were undertaken for the different irons according to the ASTM G65 standard in both as-cast and heat-treated conditions under a load of 60 N for 1500 m. The results show that, vanadium additions caused a decrease in the carbon content in the alloy and that some carbon is also consumed by forming primary vanadium carbides; thus, decreasing the eutectic M7C3 carbide volume fraction (CVF) from 30% for the base iron to 20% for the iron with 6.4%V;but overall CVF content (M7C3 + VC) is constant at 30%. Wear behaviour was better for the heat-treated alloys and mainly for the 6.4%V iron. Such a behaviour is discussed in terms of the CVF, the amount of vanadium carbides, the amount of martensite/austenite in matrix and the amount of secondary carbides precipitated during the destabilization heat treatment.

The casting Fe3Al intermetallics were solidified in sodium silicate sand mould and permanent mould respectively to get different cooling rates. After heat treatment (1000°С/15 h homogenizing annealing + furnace cooling followed by 600°С/1 h tempering + oil quenching), the microstructure and properties of Fe3Al intermetallics were investigated. The results show that the heat-treated Fe3Al intermetallics at higher cooling rate has finer grained microstructure than lower cooling rate, and the lattice distortion increases due to the higher solid solubility of the elements Cr and B at higher cooling rate. The tensile strength and hardness of the Fe3Al intermetallics at higher cooling rate are slightly higher also. However, the impact power of intermetallics at higher cooling rate is 67.5% higher than that at lower cooling rate, and the impact fracture mode is also transformed from intercrystalline fracture at lower cooling rate to intercrystallin+transcrystalline mixed fracture at higher cooling rate.

The effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and properties of Cu-3Ti-1Al alloy was investigated. The microstructure was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM), and the hardness and electrical conductivity were tested as well. The results showed that the hardness and electrical conductivity of Cu-3Ti-1Al alloy increased significantly after solid solution and ageing treatment. The strengthening effect of Cu-3Ti-1Al alloy was attributed to the formation of intermetallic phase such as Ti3Al and fine precipitates of coherent β-Cu4Ti. With increase of the aging time and the temperature, the precipitates became coarse and incoherent with Cu matrix, and the discontinuous precipitate β started to grow from grain boundaries toward grain interior, which decreased hardness. As the formation of Ti3Al, β-Cu3Ti and β-Cu4Ti phase can efficiently reduce Ti concentration in Cu matrix. The electrical conductivity of Cu-3Ti-1Al alloy increases. In the range of experiments, the optimal heat treatment process for Cu-3Ti-1Al alloy is solid solution at 850°C for 4h and ageing 500°C for 2h, and the hardness and electrical conductivity are 227HV and 12.3%IACS, respectively.

Super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) has excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, currently, there are few researches conducted on its fretting wear performance. This paper studies the influence of different heat treatment temperatures and medium environment on the fretting wear performance of SAF 2507 SDSS. Results show that the combined effect of the sigma phase and seawater lubrication can significantly improve the wear resistance of SAF 2507 SDSS. After treated with different heat treatment temperatures, different contents of sigma phases are precipitated out of SAF 2507 SDSS, which improves the wear resistance of the material to different degrees. In addition, the fretting wear performance of SAF 2507 SDSS also relates to the lubrication medium. In air, the friction and wear performance of SAF 2507 SDSS is poor, while in seawater, solution and corrosion products that acted as a lubricant dramatically improve the wear resistance of the material. Under the combined action of heat treatment and seawater lubrication medium, the friction coefficient and wear reduce by 70% and 91%, respectively.

In this article, the heat treatment and dry sliding wear behavior of Al-based AA6063 alloy reinforced with both TiC and Al2O3 ceramic particles were studied. The particles were synthesized by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) technique. The prepared composite alloy contains 5vol.%Al2O3 and 5vol.% TiC particles. The composite alloy was prepared by vortex method. To attain the peak hardness values of the alloys, age hardening behavior of the monolithic alloy and also the composite alloy was investigated. The wear tests were performed at room temperature using a pin-on-disk type apparatus. The results showed that the addition of TiC and Al2O3 particles increases the hardness of the AA6063 Al alloy and at the same time accelerates the aging kinetics. The sliding wear properties of AA6063 Al alloy were significantly improved by the addition of TiC and Al2O3 particles.
