Synergetic Effect of ECAP and Friction Stir Welding on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Aluminium Sheets

Friction stir welding (FSW) was used to join the submicrocrystalline (SMC) grained Al-Cu-Mg-Ag sheets produced by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) followed by hot rolling (HR). The effect of SPD and FSW on the microstructure and mechanical properties in the zone of base metal, as well as in the stirred zone (SZ) were examined. In addition, effect of standard heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties in these zones was considered. A refined microstructure with an average grain size of ~ 0.6 m and a portion of high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) of ~0.67 was produced in sheets by ECAP followed by HR at 250°C. The microcrystalline grained structure with average grain size of ~2.3 mm was found in joint weld. The moderate mechanical properties were revealed in SMC sheets and joint welds. Heat treatment considerably increases strength of the base metal as well as the joint welds. The higher strength of the alloy after T6 temper is attributed to the dense precipitations of  dispersoids having plate-like shape which are uniformly distributed within aluminum matrix. It was observed that FSW can produce full strength weld both in the tempered and in the un-tempered conditions.

This study evaluated the microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded lap joints. Inconel 600 and SS 400 as experimental materials were selected, and friction stir welding was carried out at tool rotation speed of 200 rpm and welding speed of 100 mm/min. Applying the friction stir welding was notably effective to reduce the grain size of the stir zone, as a result, the average grain size of Inconel 600 was reduced from 20 μm in the base material to 8.5 μm in the stir zone. Joint interface between Inconel 600 and SS 400 showed a sound weld without voids and cracks. Also, the hook, along the Inconel 600 alloy from SS 400, was formed at advancing side, which directly affected an increase in peel strength. In this study, we systematically discussed the evolution on microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir lap jointed Inconel 600 and SS 400.

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) has been applied to ultra fine grained (UFG) steel which is the plane carbon steel with the average grain size of 1mm. The plates of 5mm thickness was successfully welded using pcBN tool (polycrystalline cubic boron nitride) and the metallurgical and mechanical properties of the joint were evaluated. In the stir zone, Bainite has been formed which shows the highest harness in the joint. On the other hand, grain growth is observed in the heat affected zone. The joint effect of 88% has been obtained for UFG steel by FSW process.

Mg-2.5wt%Y-4wt%Nd-0.5wt%Zr casting alloy was subjected to submerged friction stir processing (SFSP) with different rotation rates (ω) and travel speeds (υ). The influence of the ratio of ω/υ on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-Y-Nd alloy was investigated in the present work by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, tensile test and hardness measurement. The results showed that the average grain sizes of SFSP samples were significantly refined compared with as-cast sample, and the coarse net-shaped Mg12Nd phases which located at grain boundaries in as-cast sample were changed into small particles. The combined effect of grain refinement and uniform particles distribution was responsible for the enhancement of mechanical properties. The relative optimal parameter of 600 rpm/60 mm·min-1in this research obtained the finest grain size and the best mechanical properties, which were 1.1 μm for average grain size, 305 MPa for ultimate tensile strength and 22% for elongation, respectively.

In this study, friction stir processed (FSP) pure copper sheet was equal channel angular pressed (ECAP). The purpose was to investigate the influence of ECAP on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the FSP-treated copper sheet. The dynamically recrystallized grained structure with the average grain size of ∼13 µm was found in the stir zone of the FSP. It was also revealed that FSP caused the enhancement of ultimate tensile strength compared to that of the base metal. Also, it was observed that ECAP led to further grain refinement and a tighter distribution of grains. A refined microstructure with an average grain size of ∼ 2 µm was achieved in copper sheets through FSP, followed by ECAP. The tensile strengths of the ECAP specimens were significantly increased to about 61 and 50% compared to the strengths of base metal and FSP, respectively. An overview of the results of this study showed that combined FSP/ECAP is an effective method for the mechanical improvement of the pure copper sheets.

Bulky sample was fabricated by electron beam rapid manufacture (EBRM) technology, in which Ф1.6 mm wire of in-situ TiB2/Al-Si compositeswas selected as deposition metal, following byT6 heat treatment. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the bulky sample before and afterheat treatment were analyzed. Experimental results showed that the microstructure parallel to the weld was similar to that perpendicular to the weld. The microstructure of the as-deposited sample consisted of columnar and equiaxed grains, in which siliconwas distributed along the grain boundary and the grain size was about 30 μm. Besides, some TiB2 particles converged at the grain boundary. After T6 heat treatment, the average grain size of the sample increasedobviously.The average hardness of the sample was increased to 114.65 HV from 46.55 HV, an increase of 146%. The tensile strength of the sample increased to 326.66MPafrom 143.97 MPa, but the elongationdecreased compared with that of the as-deposited state. The tensile test showed that the mechanical properties of TiB2/Al-Si composites formed by electron beam rapid manufacture were isotropic before and after heat treatment.

The present study investigates the effect of two parameters of process type and tool offset on tensile, microhardness, and microstructure properties of AA6061-T6 aluminum alloy joints. Three methods of Friction Stir Welding (FSW), Advancing Parallel-Friction Stir Welding (AP-FSW), and Retreating Parallel-Friction Stir Welding (RP-FSW) were used. In addition, four modes of 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 mm of tool offset were used in two welding passes in AP-FSW and RP-FSW processes. Based on the results, it was found that the mechanical properties of welded specimens with AP-FSW and RP-FSW techniques experience significant increments compared to FSW specimens. The best mechanical and microstructural properties were observed in the samples welded by RP-FSW, AP-FSW, and FSW methods, respectively. Welded specimens with the RP-FSW technique had better mechanical properties than other specimens due to the concentration of material flow in the weld nugget and proper microstructure refinement. In both AP-FSW and RP-FSW processes, by increasing the tool offset to 1.5 mm, joint efficiency increased significantly. The highest weld strength was found for welded specimens by RP-FSW and AP-FSW processes with a 1.5 mm tool offset. The peak sample of the RP-FSW process (1.5 mm offset) had the closest mechanical properties to the base metal, in which the Yield Stress (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and elongation percentage (E%) were 76.4%, 86.5%, and 70% of base metal, respectively. In the welding area, RP-FSW specimens had smaller average grain size and higher hardness values than AP-FSW specimens.

At present, magnesium alloys are extensively used in numerous applications due to their light weight and better characteristics. Welding of magnesium alloys is regarded as one of the most complex phenomena in various industries. The friction stir welding of magnesium alloys has encouraged abundant scientific and industrial interest as it has the potency to form a good quality joint. Post welding heat treatment is an appropriate process to further improve the properties or performance of FSW joints. Therefore, the present work aims to join AZ31 Mg alloy plates by friction stir welding, and microstructural and mechanical properties of the joint have been examined. Furthermore, the consequence of post welding heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of FSW joint has been evaluated. Tensile strength and elongation of FSW joint were about 145.4 ± 4.9 MPa and 9.5 ± 0.9%, respectively. It was found that post welding heat treatment was beneficial in homogenizing grains and to enhance mechanical properties. Tensile strength and elongation of the joint were improved by 4.74% and 15.78% respectively after PWHT. The highest microhardness of stir zone decreased about 6.84% (73 Hv to 68 Hv) after heat treatment and hardness pattern of weld became relatively smooth. Toughness of PWHT joint was 4.5 ± 0.17 Joules. The mode of tensile failure of as-welded and PWHT joint was ductile.
