Ceramic products made from red clay to move the economy of Rio Grande do Norte. Among the most common ones are outstanding bricks, tiles and slabs in different sizes and shapes. In perspective to seek products with good quality in the ceramic industry, the characterization of the raw material is essential for obtaining an excite end product. The municipality of Apodi located in the Upper West Rio Grande do Norte has the ceramic industry as a sector of great economic importance in the site. However the absence of technology for characterization of the clays found in the region is the major problem for local entrepreneurs. The objective this study is to characterize the red clay one of the ceramics used by the municipality of Apodi-RN. The procedure will be done through the testing of Plasticity, Liquidity, linear shrinkage, absorption water, porosity, XRD and EDX.

This paper investigates the main parameters influencing the plastic behavior of clays used for traditional ceramics production. For this, twenty-six clayey pastes were selected from twelve traditional ceramic plants around the city of Marrakech (Morocco). According to the lithology, six different types of materials are used as raw material in the ceramic industry of this region. Emphasis is placed on the impact of the characteristics of these clayey materials upon the plastic behavior of these clays. The pastes were characterized through their consistency using the Atterberg limits. It has been concluded that the gain size, the mineralogical and the clay mineral composition and content, the effect of diagenesis and the presence of talc-pyrophyllite association play the most important role in the control of the plasticity behavior.

This work has as objective to analyze the recycling possible uses of the slag of welding flux (SWF) in the civil construction. It was searched the liability of SWF as substitute of sand in the production of multiple-use mortars and clay for the production of ceramic bricks. SWF has origin in the submerged-arc welding (SAW), and have been used slags of the acid, neutral and basic types, according to its neutrality. Mortars have been made containing the three types of SWF and in addition a reference mortar made with sand. Physical and mineralogical characteristics of each SWF were studied, and the physical properties (consistency and density) and mechanical properties (compressive and tensile strengths) of the mortars were analyzed. Ceramic pieces have been made containing kaolinitic sedimentary clay up to 10 wt. % of SWF. The pieces were prepared by uniaxial pressing and fired at 950ºC. The following properties after firing were determined: linear shrinkage, water absorption, apparent porosity, apparent density, and flexural strength. The results show that for multiple-use mortars, SWF reached excellent results, being an overall substitute for sand as fine aggregate. For ceramic bricks, SWF can also be used as partial substitute for red clay. Both applications of SWF significantly contributes for the reduction of the ambient impact: on one hand, reducing the extraction of natural sand and clay, on other hand, contributing for the reduction of the risk of ground water contamination due to the inadequate disposal of the SWF.

Based on mineralogical and technological investigations of the deposit 'Greda' important characteristics of bentonite clay were determined. Representative samples of the deposit were characterized with X-ray diffraction, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, chemical analysis, differential thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy. It was determined that the main mineral is montmorillonite and in subordinate quantities kaolinite, quartz and pyrite. The chemical composition generally shows high silica and alumina contents in all samples and small quantities of Fe3+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ cations. Based on technological and mineralogical research, bentonite from this deposit is a high-quality raw material for use in the ceramic industry.

Conventional processes for manufacturing porous ceramic sometimes provide bodies with low mechanical strength in addition to the high complexity or cost. This work proposes a new porous ceramic processing route: gelatinization, using as raw material clay with low plasticity, water and gelatin. The characterization of the clay was carried out and specimens of various compositions were produced by varying clay content (40, 50, 55 and 60% of solids) and keeping the water and gelatin content constant in the formulation. After cold forming the samples were fired under various conditions: initial temperature of 300 or 600 °C; maximum firing temperature of 800, 900, 1000, 1100 or 1350 °C. After firing, it was obtained the values of the water absorption, bulk density, apparent porosity, linear shrinkage and mechanical resistance. The best results were for samples fired in temperatures lower than 1100 °C and 50% and 55 % of solid content.

The addition of industrial residues into common red clay ceramic has been, from many decades, an alternative of using other low cost raw materials and, more recently, as an environmentally correct destination for polluting substances. An important residue, known as yellow sludge, is that generated at the water clearing stage (WCS) of a treatment plant by some heavy industries such as an integrated steel making. Since this yellow sludge residue is normally disposed in ways that pollutes water bodies, the objective of the present work was to characterize a WCS yellow sludge and investigate its addition into clay ceramics. The residue was characterized by X-ray fluorescence, particle size distribution and scanning electron microscopy. The addition was carried out up to 7.5 wt% followed by firing at 800oC. The added ceramics were evaluated in terms of water absorption, linear shrinkage, dry apparent density and flexural rupture strength. It was found that the residue addition does not practically alter the ceramic technical properties.

AbstractGeneral properties of clays from Ceramica Murano Mine, in the municipality of El Zulia, Norte de Santander, have been investigated.  Five clay samples were collected from different mantles of the mine. All the samples were characterized using chemical and mineralogical analysis, as well as physical properties like particle size, plasticity, drying and firing shrinkage and water absorption capacity. The chemical and mineralogical results indicated that all samples contained different amount of kaolinite and quartz, followed by hematite and anatase. Low amounts of muscovite were found mainly in samples F2 and F5. These clays are suitable for use as a raw material in creating ceramic construction products, especially for the manufacture of roof tiles and bricks according to the Winkler methodology. The variations found in the characterization of the raw material influence the technological properties of the ceramic that can be obtained from the clays under study.

This study was carried out at the atelier “Adamas”, located in the city of Cunha, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The objective is to characterize the physical and mechanical properties of ceramics made using the raku technique in the Adamas atelier. As a methodology, the specimens were submitted to the following tests: Scanning Electron     Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Energy Dispersion Spectroscopy (EDS), mass loss and linear shrinkage. It was observed that the specimens were mainly composed of silicon and aluminum, which is typical of ceramics made with kaolinitic clays, possessing a plastic behavior for molding and after firing refractory. Therefore, ceramic artifacts made through the raku technique have typical chemical and physical characteristics of clay ceramics, proper adhesion of the glaze even when there are crackles originated purposely from the process, which causes the artistic artifact appropriate characteristics for use and appreciation.

The ceramic sector is important to the economy in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Overall, however, the manufacturing process is imperfect; leading to inappropriate use of raw materials, waste of energy, environmental degradation, nonconformity to the Brazilian and international standards, etc. So, its crucial improves the produced bricks. This work aims to contribute to quality control of the ceramic industry, raising the values of physical properties of their products. The main parameters that influence these values were determined by Weibull statistics. Ceramics were studied by measuring porosity, water absorption, linear shrinkage, bulk density and mechanical strength. Mechanical strength test data resulted in Weibull distributions. The Weibull statistic parameter was calculated to best evaluations of ceramic quality. The results support our initial considerations about current stands of low quality of ceramic products from Rio Grande do Norte and underline the importance of testing and improving these products.
