The as-casted Al-Si-Mg alloy was treated by solution and aging process of 545°C/10h/water cooling plus 175°C/6h /air cooling. The effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical property of Al-Si-Mg was investigated by metallographic analysis, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersion spectrum analysis and mechanical testing. The experimental results showed that the alloy had the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 317MPa and the elongation of 2%, and suitable for squeezing cast. During solution treatment, the plate-like eutectic Si particles became small granular or short bacilliform morphology, and the non-uniformly distributed eutectic phase was eliminated substantially. In addition, Si particles distributed uniformly and finely in the matrix. The tensile strength of as-casted alloy was 180 MPa, while it was up to 317 MPa after solution and aging treatment process, and the elongation increased from 2% to 3%, which is consistent with the microstructure. Fracture surface analysis showed that fracture mode of the alloy transformed from brittle fracture into co-existence of ductile fracture and brittle fracture during T6 treatment.

The effect of aging on the precipitates, mechanical and magnetic properties of Fe-21Cr-15Ni-6Mn-Nb low magnetic stainless steel were investigated. The steel was aged at 550–750 °C for 2 h after solution heat treatment at 1100 °C for 1 h. During the aging treatment, the (Nb, V)(C, N) particles gradually precipitated in the grain, which were coherent or semi-coherent with the matrix. When the aging temperature was beyond 650 °C, the coarsening rate of (Nb, V)(C, N) particles increase rapidly and the coherent orientation between (Nb, V)(C, N) particles and the matrix was lost gradually. Meanwhile, coarse M23C6 was distributed at the grain boundary with chain shape, which was non-coherent with the matrix. The coarsening behavior of (Nb, V)(C, N) precipitates in the grain was analyzed, and the size of the particles precipitated after aging treatment at 650°C for different time was calculated and studied. After aging treatment at 650 °C for 2 h, the yield strength and tensile strength of the stainless steel was 705.6 MPa and 1002.3 MPa, the elongation and the relative magnetic permeability was 37.8% and 1.0035, respectively.

The in-situ Ti alloying of aluminium alloys was fulfilled by electrolysis, and the material was made into A356 alloy and used in automobile wheels. The results show that the grains of the A356 alloy was refined and the second dendrites arm was shortened due to the in-situ Ti alloying. Trough 3-hour solution treatment and 2-hour aging treatment for the A356 alloy, the microstructures were homogeneous, and Si particles were spheroid and distribute in the matrix fully. The outstanding mechanical properties with tensile strength (σb≥300Mpa) and elongation values (δ≥10%) have been obtained because the heat treatment was optimized. Compared with the traditional materials, tensile strength and elongation were increased by 7.6~14.1% and 7.4~44.3% respectively. The qualities of the automobile wheels were improved remarkably.

Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of AZ80 Mg alloy during annular channel angular extrusion (350 °C) and heat treatment with varying parameters were investigated, respectively. The results showed that dynamic recrystallization of Mg grains was developed and the dendritic eutectic β-Mg17Al12 phases formed during the solidification were broken into small β-phase particles after hot extrusion. Moreover, a weak texture with two dominant peaks formed owing to the significant grain refinement and the enhanced activation of pyramidal <c + a> slip at relative high temperature. The tension tests showed that both the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the extruded alloy were dramatically improved owing to the joint strengthening effect of fine grain and β-phase particles as compared with the homogenized sample. The solution treatment achieved the good plasticity of the alloy resulting from the dissolution of β-phases and the development of more equiaxed grains, while the direct-aging process led to poor alloy elongation as a result of residual eutectic β-phases. After solution and aging treatment, simultaneous bonding strength and plasticity of the alloy were achieved, as a consequence of dissolution of coarse eutectic β-phases and heterogeneous precipitation of a large quantity of newly formed β-phases with both the morphologies of continuous and discontinuous precipitates.

In this study, 7075 aluminum matrix composites reinforced with 1.5 wt.% nanosized Al2O3 were fabricated by ultrasonic vibration. The effect of T6 heat treatment on both microstructure and hardness of nanosized Al2O3 reinforced 7075 (Al2O3np/7075) composites were studied via scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and hardness tests. The Mg(Zn,Cu,Al)2 phases gradually dissolved into the matrix under solution treatment at 480 °C for 5 h. However, the morphology and size of Al7Cu2Fe phases remained unchanged due to their high melting points. Furthermore, the slenderness strips MgZn2 phases precipitated under aging treatment at 120 °C for 24 h. Compared to as-cast composites, the hardness of the sample under T6 heat treatment was increased ~52%. The strengthening mechanisms underlying the achieved hardness of composites are revealed.

Abstract The paper presents influence of soaking parameters (temperature and time) on structure and mechanical properties of spheroidal graphite nickel-manganese-copper cast iron, containing: 7.2% Ni, 2.6% Mn and 2.4% Cu. Raw castings showed austenitic structure and relatively low hardness (150 HBW) guaranteeing their good machinability. Heat treatment consisted in soaking the castings within 400 to 600°C for 2 to 10 hours followed by air-cooling. In most cases, soaking caused changes in structure and, in consequence, an increase of hardness in comparison to raw castings. The highest hardness and tensile strength was obtained after soaking at 550°C for 6 hours. At the same time, decrease of the parameters related to plasticity of cast iron (elongation and impact strength) was observed. This resulted from the fact that, in these conditions, the largest fraction of fine-acicular ferrite with relatively high hardness (490 HV0.1) was created in the matrix. At lower temperatures and after shorter soaking times, hardness and tensile strength were lower because of smaller degree of austenite transformation. At higher temperatures and after longer soaking times, fine-dispersive ferrite was produced. That resulted in slightly lower material hardness.

Alloys were produced by casting of Cu-Al-Fe-Be and Cu-Al-Fe-Ni aluminum bronzes and aged. The microstructures and mechanical properties were evaluated. The results indicated that solution and aging treatment can significantly improve the plasticity of Cu-Al-Fe-Be and Cu-Al-Fe-Ni, while the strength and hardness remained in the quenched level. Extending the aging time can effectively enhance the mechanical properties of alloys, and the longer the aging time, the higher the electric resistance of alloys. According to the results, the mechanical properties of the Cu-Al-Fe-Be alloy can be improved remarkably by solution treatment for 120 min at 950°C, followed by aging treatment for 120 min at 350°C, and quenched. While the most suitable heat treatment for the Cu-Al-Fe-Ni alloy was solution treatment 120 min at 950°C, followed by aging for 120 min at 450°C, and quenched. The experimental result also suggested that the Cu-Al-Fe-Be alloy possessed higher hardness and tensile strength compared to the Cu-Al-Fe-Ni alloy.

The effects of heat treatment on the microstructure, tensile property and fracture behavior of as-extruded AZ91 magnesium alloy were studied by OM and SEM. The results show that the grain of as-cast AZ91 alloy is refined by extruding and dynamic recrystallization, and the mechanical properties increase obviously. The ductility is significantly enhanced after solution treatment of the as-extruded AZ91 alloy, tensile strength is almost the same before and hardness is significantly reduced after solution treatment and artificial aging treatment. The tensile strength reduced and the ductility is significantly enhanced of as-extruded AZ91 magnesium alloy after annealing processes. The fracture surface of as-extruded AZ91 magnesium alloy has the mixture of ductile and brittle characteristic. But after T6 or annealing treatment, its dimple number increases evidently.

The paper presents results of TEM investigations of Elektron 21 magnesium alloy in as cast condition and after heat treatment. The compositions of the Elektron 21 alloy used in the present study was Mg-2,7%wtNd-1,2%wtGd-0,47%wtZr. Solution heat treatment was performed at 520°C/8 h/water. Ageing treatments were performed at 200°C/4÷96h and 300°C/48h with cooling in air. The as-cast microstructure and microstructural evolution during heat treatment were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Samples were prepared using Gatan PIPS ion mill. Examinations were performed in a JEM 2010 ARP microscope. The microstructure of the cast alloy consists of a-Mg phase matrix with precipitates of Mg12(Ndx,Gd1-x) phase at grain boundaries. After solution treatment the Mg12(Ndx,Gd1-x) phase dissolved in the matrix. The ageing treatment applied after solution treatment with air-cooling caused precipitation of a β’ and β phases.

The effect of heat treatment on vacuum die-casting (VDC) AT72 magnesium alloy was studied. The optimal process of heat treatment was obtained. The result shows that the alloy was composed of α-Mg, Mg17Al12and Mg2Sn. After solution treatment at 686K for 24h, Mg17Al12completely dissolved in α-Mg matrix. With the aging treatment following solution treatment, Mg17Al12kept precipitating in the matrix and along grain boundary. Moreover, Mg2Sn distributed along the grain boundary did not disappear after solution treatment at 686K. This indicates that Mg2Sn phase exhibits very high thermal stability. The heat treatment process was optimized with solution at 686K for 24h plus ageing at 473K for 18h, in the condition of which AT72 magnesium alloy exhibits a maximum hardness with value of 90.8Hv. The successful application of heat treatment for AT72 magnesium alloy could be attributed to the elimination of the air bubble in the casing through VDC. However, the porosity in the cast couldnt be efficiently eliminated by VDC, which result in the growth of shrinkage pore.

The effect of heat treatment process on the microstructure and properties of casting Al-5.5Fe-4Cu-2Zn-0.4Mg-0.5Mn alloy were studied. It has been founded that, the mechanicals properties of casting Al-5.5Fe-4Cu-2Zn-0.4Mg-0.5Mn alloy improved significantly after solid solution and aging treated (T6), the tensile strength increased from 173.4MPa to 218.7 MPa. However the mechanical properties of the alloy after aging treated (T1) get less enhanced and the tensile strength only achieved 194.07MPa. The SEM and TEM analysis shows that solid solution treatment plays a role of dissolving the second phases in casting Al-5.5Fe-4Cu-2Zn-0.4Mg-0.5Mn alloy. After solution treatment the alloy was proceed with low-temperature ageing treatment, a large number of dispersively tiny phases precipitated in the matrix of the alloy, which exhibits strengthening action.
