An X-ray phase analysis and the metallographic examination were employed in the investigation of crystal structure of the Tb4Sb3 compound. Magnetic properties have been studied by means of magnetometric measurements, including a magnetocaloric effect, electrical resistivity and magnetoresistivity, and specific heat in broad temperature and the magnetic field ranges on a polycrystalline sample. It was confirmed that the Tb4Sb3 compound is an antiferromagnet with the temperature of the magnetic transition, TN = 111.4 K (specific heat) or 114 K (magnetization) . The results are discussed in the term of a crystal field splitting scheme.

The intercalated compound Fe0.5TiSe2 has been studied by means of X-ray, neutron diffraction, electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements. This compound with Fe atoms located between Se-Ti-Se sandwiches has a monoclinic crystal structure and exhibits a long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering below TN = 135 K. At T < TN, the Fe magnetic moments with a value ~ 3.0 µB are directed at an angle of (74.4±0.5)º to the layers and form a tilted antiferromagnetic structure with the propagation vector (½, 0, ½). It has been shown that application of magnetic field above 300 kOe may lead to transformations of the AF structure.

AbstractWe analyze, using experiments and 3D MHD numerical simulations, the dynamic and radiative properties of a plasma ablated by a laser (1 ns, 10$$^{12}$$ 12 –10$$^{13}$$ 13 W/cm$$^2$$ 2 ) from a solid target as it expands into a homogeneous, strong magnetic field (up to 30 T) that is transverse to its main expansion axis. We find that as early as 2 ns after the start of the expansion, the plasma becomes constrained by the magnetic field. As the magnetic field strength is increased, more plasma is confined close to the target and is heated by magnetic compression. We also observe that after $$\sim 8$$ ∼ 8  ns, the plasma is being overall shaped in a slab, with the plasma being compressed perpendicularly to the magnetic field, and being extended along the magnetic field direction. This dense slab rapidly expands into vacuum; however, it contains only $$\sim 2\%$$ ∼ 2 % of the total plasma. As a result of the higher density and increased heating of the plasma confined against the laser-irradiated solid target, there is a net enhancement of the total X-ray emissivity induced by the magnetization.

A polycrystalline sample of a new polymorph of the title compound, C8H11NO2, was produced during a variable-temperature X-ray powder diffraction study. The crystal structure was solved at 1.67 Å resolution by simulated annealing from laboratory powder data collected at 250 K. Subsequent Rietveld refinement yielded an R wp of 0.070 to 1.54 Å resolution. The structure contains two molecules in the asymmetric unit, which form a C 2 2(8) chain motif via N—H...O hydrogen bonds.

A polycrystalline sample of Ca4ZrGe3O12 was synthesized using the nitrate–citrate method and heated at 850–1100 °C. Structural refinement based on X-ray powder diffraction data showed that the crystal structure is of the garnet type with a cubic unit-cell parameter [a = 12.71299(3) Å] and the space group Ia$\bar 3$d. The structural formula is presented as Ca3[CaZr]octa[Ge]tetraO12.

Samples of CayFe12-yO19 (0 ≤ y ≤ 1.0) were prepared by a proteic sol–gel process with hematite phase and clusters of M-type calcium hexaferrite. Impedance analysis showed that the resistivity increased with calcium concentration in the 0.0 < y ≤ 0.2 range, but decreased for y > 0.2. The saturation of the electrical resistivity occurred at 7.5 × 106 Ω·cm for Ca0.9Fe11.1O19. The plot of magnetization as a function of the magnetic field showed high values of saturation magnetization (40 emu/g) with low remanence (6.7 emu/g) and coercive field (320 Oe).

In-plane resistance as a function of magnitude and direction of the magnetic field and the temperature has been measured for TmNi2B2C from above the superconducting transition temperature at 10.7 K to below the magnetic transition TN=1.5 K. The superconducting upper critical field HC2(T) exhibits a large anisotropy and structure in the vicinity of TN. The magnetoresistance above TC is large and changes sign as the direction of the magnetic field is rotated from in-plane to parallel with the c-axis.
