2.5D and 3D packaging can provide significant size and performance advantages over other packaging technologies. However, these advantages usually come at a high price. Since 2.5D and 3D packaging costs are significant, today they are only used if no other option can meet the product requirements, and most of these applications are relatively low volume. Products such as high end FPGAs, high performance GPUs, and high bandwidth memory are great applications but none have volume requirements close to mobile phones or tablets. Without the benefit of volume production, the cost of 2.5D and 3D packaging could stay high for a long time. In this paper, we will provide cost model results of a complete 2.5D and 3D manufacturing process. Each manufacturing activity will be included and the key cost drivers will be analyzed regarding future cost reductions. Expensive activities that are well down the learning curve (RDL creation, CMP, etc.) will probably not change much in the future. However, expensive activities that are new to this process (DRIE, temporary bond/debond, etc.) provide good opportunities for cost reduction. A variety of scenarios will be included to understand how design characteristics impact the cost. Understanding how and why the dominant cost components will change over time is critical to accurately predicting the future cost of 2.5D and 3D packaging.

2.5D and 3D applications using through silicon vias (TSVs) are increasingly being considered as an alternative to conventional packaging. Miniaturization and high performance product requirements are driving this move, although in many cases the cost of both 2.5D and 3D is still high. In this paper we will identify the major cost drivers for 2.5D and 3D packaging and assess cost reduction progress, including current costs versus expected future costs. We will also compare these costs to alternative packaging.

Abstract The need for broadband data has increased speedily but in underserved rural areas, the mobile connectivity of 3G and LTE is still a significant challenge. By looking at the historical trend, the data traffic and the internet are still expected to grow in these areas [1]. The next generation of satellites is trying to decrease the cost per MB having the advantage of higher throughput and availability. To maintain the performance of the link, choosing an appropriate frequency is evident. A multi-beam satellite system can fulfill the demand and performance over a coverage area. The high throughput satellites (HTS) fulfill this requirement using C and Ku bands. In this paper, we present the benefits of using Ku-band on the user site and the composite of C and Ku bands on the gateway site. This configuration has proved to be a cost-efficient solution with high performance over the traditional straight configuration. The data rate is improved five times both on upstream and downstream as compared to the existing available FSS system. Moreover, it has got an advantage to Ku-band user that they would enjoy the significant improvement in the performance without upgrading their systems.

The CERN Tape Archive (CTA) provides a tape backend to disk systems and, in conjunction with EOS, is managing the data of the LHC experiments at CERN. Magnetic tape storage offers the lowest cost per unit volume today, followed by hard disks and flash. In addition, current tape drives deliver a solid bandwidth (typically 360MB/s per device), but at the cost of high latencies, both for mounting a tape in the drive and for positioning when accessing non-adjacent files. As a consequence, the transfer scheduler should queue transfer requests before the volume warranting a tape mount is reached. In spite of these transfer latencies, user-interactive operations should have a low latency. The scheduling system for CTA was built from the experience gained with CASTOR. Its implementation ensures reliability and predictable performance, while simplifying development and deployment. As CTA is expected to be used for a long time, lock-in to vendors or technologies was minimized. Finally, quality assurance systems were put in place to validate reliability and performance while allowing fast and safe development turnaround.

It can no longer be reasonably charged to a Defence Budget but must be justified by immediate or prospective savings as compared with alternative industrial techniques which are available or likely to be available. There have been important changes since the British Nuclear Power Programme was first launched in 1955, with the result that nuclear power from the plants now being ordered will cost about 30 per cent more than from the best conventional plants built concurrently and operated under similar load conditions. The Programme is still justified despite changed circumstances. Heat Cycle Temperatures and Break-even Nuclear power will be cheaper when higher temperatures are achieved in the heat cycle. Advances in technology are still bringing down the cost of power generation in the conventional field, so that the point at which the cost of nuclear power breaks even with, and then falls below, the cost of conventional power is determined by the convergence of two falling curves of cost. Conventional Plant The use of higher temperatures and the practicability (provided by the use of higher pressures) of using re-heat, has increased thermal efficiencies and has combined with the reduced capital cost to reduce the cost of generation. The continuance of the downward trend of capital cost will be affected by considerations of design and operation. The future cost of coal is a vital factor in any prediction of the future cost of conventional power, but the forecast of future coal costs is far more uncertain than the forecasts of capital cost and thermal efficiency, either in the conventional or the nuclear fields.

The dual mode air-road vehicle is one of those concepts that have intrigued travelers and inventors for a long time. The quest for a vehicle that can be driven on the roads and flown in the sky started as early as the development of airplane by Wright brothers in 1906. With the ever growing traffic and congestion on the roads, increased security procedures at airports and airline hub-spoke system, the travel times for certain range of distances have increased in recent times creating a need for a dual mode vehicle. In the US, for the mid-range distances (200–500 mile), travel options available are limited for other than large population centers. Transportation by train or bus is often limited and involves multi-stops between desired destinations. Therefore, the mid-range travel is more likely accomplished by a car or an airline or sometimes both. Travel by car or airline for this ranged can consumes considerable time because of road, airport and air traffic congestions, security procedures and wait times. A survey published in 2004 by Bureau of Transportation Statistics [1] reveals that 200–500 mile trips account for about 31.8% of the total trips taken in the US. With the premise that a dual mode vehicle could be a potential solution for mid-range travel, particularly around a 300 mile distance, the present work aims at establishing a frame-work and performance envelope for this type vehicle, In other words, the roadable aircraft or the flying car. These vehicles are neither a high performance car nor a high performance aircraft. They are vehicles that have the capability to be driven on the roads and flown in the sky. The present study focuses on identifying the technical, operational and acceptability challenges that have to be overcome to build a dual mode vehicle. This paper also covers some preliminary design aspects like power-fuel requirements, wing-airfoil parameters and an approach to address the road mode issues arising due to the wing.

Optimal status and performance of the used parts can often make the difference between successful and unsuccessful remanufacturing for construction machinery. However, a used parts is remanufactured at an unreasonable time, there is a greater degree of resource waste and diseconomy. In this paper, a new method for determining the optimum active remanufacturing time is proposed, which considers both environmental and economic indicators. As an example, the life cycle assessment method was adopted for assessing the environmental impact of an oil cylinder over its entire service life, and an average annual cost model was established. Considering both the environmental index and the cost index, an optimization process was performed and the optimum active remanufacturing time for the oil cylinder was determined to be after 6.58 years of operation.

Controlling the maintenance OPEX is one of the major challenges that any utility faces. The challenges lie in how to optimize the three main factors: risk, performance, and cost. Besides, no utility can depend on a unique type of maintenance, there is always a combination of a different kind of maintenance such as breakdown, preventive, risk-based, conditionbased,..etc. So, what is the answer to this question: what type of maintenance needs to be followed to keep the transformer in service in with high performance? There is no specific answer to this question. Each type of maintenance can be applied based on the transformer`s operating environment. However, most of the utilities apply preventive and condition-based maintenance. To justify this answer, some data need to be analyzed to assess the maintenance performance and recommend what are enhancement need to be added. One of these approaches is to apply in service condition-based assessment to study the health of the assets based on the current maintenance practice. Furthermore, study both historical maintenance recordsand failure rates will help to understand the relationship between the effectiveness of maintenance and service efficiency.This relation can come in two shapes. One is to do the right things by developing a set of maintenance activities that need to be performed during the maintenance to ensure its effectiveness. Second, is to do things right by enhancing the maintenance crew capabilities and competencies to ensure high efficiency. After analyzing all these factors mentioned above, It has been noticed that in-service condition-based assessment of the transformer is a powerful tool that can be used to enhance and build an effective strategy. It will not only involve a set of activities during the maintenance, but it also covers the whole life cycle of the transformer. Besides, it highlights the gaps in the maintenance process and procedures, and provide indications where enhancement need to be applied based on international practice. These changes were observed on the cost and performance in the benchmarking study that was done through International Transmission Operation and Maintenance Study (ITOMS) which was a good indication of the effectiveness of strategy used for transformers. However, as part of the asset management approach, continuous improvement will continue to reach the vision that has been set in the maintenance optimization and to prepare for the future significant increase in transformer aging.

Fog computing aims to support applications requiring low latency and high scalability by using resources at the edge level. In general, fog computing comprises several autonomous mobile or static devices that share their idle resources to run different services. The providers of these devices also need to be compensated based on their device usage. In any fog-based resource-allocation problem, both cost and performance need to be considered for generating an efficient resource-allocation plan. Estimating the cost of using fog devices prior to the resource allocation helps to minimize the cost and maximize the performance of the system. In the fog computing domain, recent research works have proposed various resource-allocation algorithms without considering the compensation to resource providers and the cost estimation of the fog resources. Moreover, the existing cost models in similar paradigms such as in the cloud are not suitable for fog environments as the scaling of different autonomous resources with heterogeneity and variety of offerings is much more complicated. To fill this gap, this study first proposes a micro-level compensation cost model and then proposes a new resource-allocation method based on the cost model, which benefits both providers and users. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm ensures better resource-allocation performance and lowers application processing costs when compared to the existing best-fit algorithm.

We present an approach for learning spatial traversability maps for driving in complex, urban environments based on an extensive dataset demonstrating the driving behaviour of human experts. The direct end-to-end mapping from raw input data to cost bypasses the effort of manually designing parts of the pipeline, exploits a large number of data samples, and can be framed additionally to refine handcrafted cost maps produced based on manual hand-engineered features. To achieve this, we introduce a maximum-entropy-based, non-linear inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) framework which exploits the capacity of fully convolutional neural networks (FCNs) to represent the cost model underlying driving behaviours. The application of a high-capacity, deep, parametric approach successfully scales to more complex environments and driving behaviours, while at deployment being run-time independent of training dataset size. After benchmarking against state-of-the-art IRL approaches, we focus on demonstrating scalability and performance on an ambitious dataset collected over the course of 1 year including more than 25,000 demonstration trajectories extracted from over 120 km of urban driving. We evaluate the resulting cost representations by showing the advantages over a carefully, manually designed cost map and furthermore demonstrate its robustness towards systematic errors by learning accurate representations even in the presence of calibration perturbations. Importantly, we demonstrate that a manually designed cost map can be refined to more accurately handle corner cases that are scarcely seen in the environment, such as stairs, slopes and underpasses, by further incorporating human priors into the training framework.
