Increase in the density of electronic packaging leads to the investigation of highly efficient thermal management systems. The challenge in these micro-systems is to maximize heat transfer per unit volume. In the author's previous work, experimental and computational analysis has been performed on LTCC substrates using embedded silver vias. This novel technique of embedding silver vias along with forced convection resulted in higher heat transfer rates. The present work further investigates into the optimization of this model. A Multi-objective optimization problem has been formulated for the heat transfer in the LTCC model. The Log Mean Temperature Difference (LMTD) method of heat exchangers has been used in the formulation. Optimization is done based on maximization of the total heat transferred and minimization of the coolant pumping power. Structural and thermal design variables are considered to meet the manufacturability and energy requirements. Demanded pressure loss and volume of the silver metal are used as constraints. The classical optimization technique Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) is used to solve the micro-heat exchanger problem. The optimal design is presented and sensitivity analysis results are discussed.

Increased heat generation in semiconductor devices for demanding applications leads to the investigation of highly efficient cooling solutions. Effective options for thermal management include passing of cooling liquid through the microchannel heat sink and using highly conductive materials. In the author's previous work, experimental and computational analyses were performed on LTCC substrates using embedded silver vias and silver columns forming microchannels. This novel technique of embedding silver vias along with forced convection using a coolant resulted in higher heat transfer rates. The present work investigates the design optimization of this cooling system (microheat exchanger) using systems optimization theory. A new multiobjective optimization problem was formulated for the heat transfer in the LTCC model using the log mean temperature difference (LMTD) method of heat exchangers. The goal is to maximize the total heat transferred and to minimize the coolant pumping power. Structural and thermal design variables are considered to meet the manufacturability and energy requirements. Pressure loss and volume of the silver metal are used as constraints. A hybrid optimization technique using sequential quadratic programming (SQP) and branch and bound method of integer programming has been developed to solve the microheat exchanger problem. The optimal design is presented and sensitivity analysis results are discussed.

Heat transfer from a nuclear fuel rod bumper support was computationally simulated by a finite element method and probabilistically evaluated in view of the several uncertainties in the performance parameters. Cumulative distribution functions and sensitivity factors were computed for overall heat transfer rates due to the thermodynamic random variables. These results can be used to identify quickly the most critical design variables in order to optimize the design and to make it cost effective. The analysis leads to the selection of the appropriate measurements to be used in heat transfer and to the identification of both the most critical measurements and the parameters.

The focus of this research paper is on the application of water based MgO nanofluids for thermal management of a car radiator. Nanofluids of different volumetric concentrations (i.e. 0.06%, 0.09% and 0.12%) were prepared and then experimentally tested for their heat transfer performance in a car radiator. All concentrations showed enhancement in heat transfer compared to the pure base fluid. A peak heat transfer enhancement of 31% was obtained at 0.12 % volumetric concentration of MgO in basefluid. The fluid flow rate was kept in a range of 8-16 liter per minute. Lower flow rates resulted in greater heat transfer rates as compared to heat transfer rates at higher flow rates for the same volumetric concentration. Heat transfer rates were found weakly dependent on the inlet fluid temperature. An increase of 8?C in inlet temperature showed only a 6% increase in heat transfer rate.


Heat exchangers are prominent industrial applications where engineering science of heat transfer and Mass transfer occurs. It is a contrivance where transfer of energy occurs to get output in the form of energy transfer. This paper aims at finding a solution to improve the thermal performance in a heat exchanger by using passive method techniques. This experimental and numerical analysis deals with finding the temperature outlets of cold and hot fluid for different mass flow rates and also pressure drop in the tube and the annular side by adding an elliptical leaf strip in the pipe at various angles. The single elliptical leaf used in experiment has major to minor axes ratios as 2:1 and distance of 50 mm between two leaves are arranged at different angular orientations from 0 0 to 1800 with 100 intervals. Since it’s not possible to find the heat transfer rates and pressure drops at every orientation of elliptical leaf so a generalized regression neural network (GRNN) prediction tool is used to get outputs with given inputs to avoid experimentation. GRNN is a statistical method of determining the relationship between dependent and independent variables. The values obtained from experimentation and GRNN nearly had precise values to each other. This analysis is a small step in regard with encomiastic approach for enhancement in performance of heat exchangers

The work presented is an effort to realize the changes occurring for convective coefficients of heat transfer in STHX fitted with inclined baffles. Effort has been undertaken using Fluent, a commercially available CFD code ona CAD model of small STHX with inclined baffles with cold liquid flowing into the tubes and hot liquid flowing in the shell. Four sets of CFD analysis have been carried out. The hot liquid flow rate through shell compartments varied from 0.2 kg/sec to 0.8 kg/sec in steps of 0.2 kg/sec, while keeping the cold liquid flow condition in tube at 0.4 kg/sec constant. Heat transfer rates, compartment temperatures, and overall heat transfer coefficients, for cold liquid and hot liquid, were studied. The results given by the software using CFD approach were appreciable and comparatively in agreement with the results available by the experimental work, which was undertaken for the same set of inlet pressure conditions, liquid flow rates, and inlet temperatures of liquid for both hot and cold liquids. The experimental output results were also used to validate the results given by the CFD software. The results from the CFD analysis were further used to conclude the effect of baffle inclination on heat duty. The process thus followed also helped realize the effects of baffle inclination on convective heat transfer coefficient of the liquid flow through the shell in an inclined baffle shell and tube heat exchanger. The temperature plots for both cold and hot liquid were also generated for understanding the compartmental temperature distributions inclusive of the inlet and outlet compartments. The heat duty for a heat exchanger has been found to increase with the increase in baffle inclinations from zero degree to 20 degrees. Likewise, the convective heat transfer coefficients have also been found to increase with the increase in baffle inclinations.

Additive manufacturing (AM) processes allow for complex geometries to be developed in a cost- and time-efficient manner in small-scale productions. The unique functionality of AM offers an ideal collaboration between specific applications of human variability and thermal management. This research investigates the intersection of AM, human variability and thermal management in the development of a military helmet heat exchanger. A primary aim of this research was to establish the effectiveness of AM components in thermal applications based on material composition. Using additively manufactured heat pipe holders, the thermal properties of a passive evaporative cooler are tested for performance capability with various heat pipes over two environmental conditions. This study conducted a proof-of-concept design for a passive helmet heat exchanger, incorporating AM components as both the heat pipe holders and the cushioning material targeting internal head temperatures of ≤ 35°C. Copper heat pipes from 3 manufactures with three lengths were analytically simulated and experimentally tested for their effectiveness in the helmet design. A total of 12 heat pipes were tested with 2 heat pipes per holder in a lateral configuration inside a thermal environmental chamber. Two 25-hour tests in an environmental chamber were conducted evaluating temperature (25°C, 45°C) and relative humidity (25%, 50%) for the six types of heat pipes and compared against the analytical models of the helmet heat exchangers. Many of the heat pipes tested were good conduits for moving the heat from the head to the evaporative wicking material. All heat pipes had Coefficients of Performance under 3.5 when tested with the lateral system. Comparisons of the analytical and experimental models show the need for the design to incorporate a re-wetting reservoir. This work on a 2-dimensional system establishes the basis for design improvements and integration of the heat pipes and additively manufactured parts with a 3-dimensional helmet.

Heat exchanger performance data commonly contain redundant heat transfer rate measurements. Due to measurement uncertainties involved in the experiments, these redundant heat transfer rates have some discrepancies. While it is a common practice and adopted by engineering standards to use the arithmetic mean of heat transfer measurements, the resulting performance indicators of heat exchangers do not result in a minimum uncertainty possible. Also, this approach fails to resolve discrepancies in resulting transport performance parameters depending on the use of UA-LMTD method or effectiveness-NTU method. In this paper, heat exchanger performance data with two heat transfer measurements from hot and cold fluid streams are combined to produce a least uncertainty of the performance indicators. Individual measurements of mass flow rates and temperatures are corrected by most likely errors based on their respective uncertainties. The validity of this method has been demonstrated by Monte-Carlo simulations. Using air conditioning heat exchanger performance data under dry and wet surface conditions, it is demonstrated that the proposed method leads to a minimum uncertainty of the calculated variables.

This paper presents estimates of heat removal capabilities of a Digitized Heat Transfer (DHT) cooled device, a novel active thermal management technique for high power density electronics and integrated microsystems. In DHT, thermal energy is transported by a discrete array of electrostatically activated microdroplets of liquid metals, alloys or aqueous solutions with the potential of supporting significantly higher heat transfer rates than classical air-cooled heat sinks. Actuation methods for dispensing and transporting individual fluid slugs with a high degree of precision and programmability are described, and numerical results for the amount of heat flux removal a DHT device can obtain are presented.

This paper aims to enhance the thermal performance of an industrial shell-and-tube heat exchanger utilized for the purpose of cooling raw natural gas by means of mixture of Sales gas. The main objective of this work is to provide an optimum and reliable thermal design of a single-shelled finned tubes heat exchanger to replace the existing two- shell and tube heat exchanger due to the space limitations in the plant. A comprehensive thermal model was developed using the effectiveness-NTU method. The shell-side and tube-side overall heat transfer coefficient were determined using Bell-Delaware method and Dittus-Boelter correlation, respectively. The obtained results showed that the required area to provide a thermal duty of 1.4 MW is about 1132 m2 with tube-side and shell-side heat transfer coefficients of 950 W/m2K and 495 W/m2K, respectively. In order to verify the obtained results generated from the mathematical model, a numerical study was carried out using HTRI software which showed a good match in terms of the heat transfer area and the tube-side heat transfer coefficient.
