The aim of the study is to investigate knowledge and sexual practices with reference to correct use of condoms among first year South African University students. The sample consisted of 206 participants, 146 female and 60 male, the mean age was 20.9 years (SD=3.4), with a range from 17 to 34 years. Results indicated that one third (29.2%) of the sample reported never using condoms, 35.4% always, 19.8% regularly and 8.5% irregularly in the past three months. About 90% levels of correct answers for condom use were found for the items of ‘condoms as protection against STD and AIDS’, ‘expiry date of condoms’, and ‘re-using condoms’. More than 15% were not aware that a condom should be put on before any contact with the vagina. The most common mistakes with respect to condom use were ignorance about the correct moment to put on a condom (56%), and when to take off a condom (55%). Male sex and especially increasing recent sexual encounters was associated with correct condom knowledge. The most common reasons for not using a condom were ‘I do not have the AIDS virus’ and ‘I thought I was safe’ seems to indicate a low perceived susceptibility. Findings are discussed in view of condom promotion programmes.

The Famous Sayings test consists of four measures: (CM) Conventional Mores, (HO) Hostility, (FF) Fear of Failure, and (SA) Social Acquiescence. The test was applied to two samples of South African students, 338 College of Education students whose data were analyzed according to sex, education and age; and a nearly all male group of 110 first-year students of the Department of Architecture, whose data were combined for analysis. The mean scores for each total group on two of the four scales, CM and SA, were considerably higher for the college group. The correlations among four scales for the two groups were similar and significant ( p ≤ .01). The item-analyses (internal consistency) performed for both groups show similar reliability coefficients for CM and SA but lower reliability for College of Education group on FF and HO. On the whole, the measures are sufficiently reliable and independent for screening purposes.

This research in intended to find out the effectiveness of small group discussion technique in improving the students’s speaking ability. It was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Ratahan in which one class of the first-year students of the school was the sample. The data of the research were obtained by using test in the form of pre-test and post-test. The result showed that the scores of the post-test were higher than that of the pre-test. The mean of the post-test is 8.2 and the mean of the pre-test is 6.7. Teaching speaking skill by using small group discussion technique can improve the students’ ability in speaking. Small group discussion technique can give the students opportunity to practice their language. In small group discussion, they can express their ideas and thought freely. It will be better for English teacher to vary the techniques of teaching to avoid boredom that might appear to the students.

This chapter examines how Bob Thomas headed for South Bend, Indiana, and arrived at the University of Notre Dame as a walk-on in football. When Thomas appeared for his first day of football workouts, he was greeted with the cold dismissal typically given to walk-ons. After waiting in line for the secondhand equipment issued to non-scholarship players, he was given the ignominious jersey number 98. With first-year students ineligible for the varsity at that time, Thomas spent his initial year at Notre Dame suiting up for the limited number of freshman football games while also playing in a few contests for the university's club soccer team. Otherwise, he acclimated himself to the milieu of college as he took up residence on the North Quad. After completing one semester of a pre-med curriculum, Thomas realized it would be difficult to continue that concentration while playing football. He took some business courses and ultimately ended up majoring in government studies. The chapter then details Thomas's career as a kicker for the Fighting Irish.

When the first year of hourly observations of the declination, January 1 to December 31st, 1841, was received at Woolwich from the Magnetic Observatory at Hobarton, and when means had been taken of the readings of the collimator-scale at the several hours in each month, and these monthly means had been collected into an­nual means, it was found that the mean daily motion of the declina­tion magnet at Hobarton presented, as one of its most conspicuous and well-marked features, a double progression in the twenty-four hours, moving twice from west to east, and twice from east to west; the phases of this diurnal variation were, that the north end of the magnet moved progressively from west to east in the hours of the forenoon, and from east to west in the hours of the afternoon ; and again from west to east during the early hours of the night, return­ing from east to west during the later hours of the night: the two easterly extremes were attained at nearly homonymous hours of the day and night, as were also the two westerly extremes; the ampli­tudes of the arcs traversed during the hours of the day were con­siderably greater than those traversed during the hours of the night. When, in like manner, the first year of hourly observations, July 1st, 1842, to June 30th, 1843, was received from the Toronto Ob­servatory, and the mean diurnal march of the declination magnet was examined, it was found to exhibit phenomena in striking corre­spondence with those at Hobarton. At Toronto also a double pro­gression presented itself, of which the easterly extremes were attained at nearly homonymous hours, as were also the westerly; whilst the hours of extreme elongation were nearly the same (solar) hours at the two stations, but with this distinction, that the hours at which the north end of the magnet reached its extreme easterly elongation at Hobarton were the same, or nearly the same, as those at which it reached its extreme westerly elongation at Toronto, and vice verâ Pursuing, therefore, the ordinary mode of designating the direction of the declination by the north end of the magnet in the southern as well as in the northern hemisphere, the diurnal motion of the magnet may be said to be in opposite directions at Hobarton and Toronto; but if (in correspondence with our mode of speaking in regard to another magnetic element, the Inclination) the south end of the magnet is employed to designate the direction of the motion in the southern hemisphere, and the north end in the northern hemisphere, the apparent contrariety disappears, and the directions, as well as the times of the turning hours, are approximately the same at both stations.

This study investigated the personal, career and learning skill needs of first-year university students, their preferred counselling sources, and compared South African and international students. Respondents completed a structured questionnaire (N = 567) with more than half reporting a moderate to high need for assistance with their concerns. Women had a significantly greater need for assistance with the bulk of listed concerns than men. International students had a significantly greater need for assistance than South African students and were particularly concerned about xenophobia. These results may assist administrators and counsellors to develop strategies to address identified student needs.
