1 Timothy 2:8-12 – a code of conduct for public worship, ordinary life or marriage? An exegetic study Throughout the world, the relation between men and women are currently in the spotlight. In 1 Timothy 2:8-15, Paul gave instructions to men and women that may illuminate the relation between the sexes. This article attempts to clarify Paul’s instructions to men and women. The article investigates whether Paul gives any indications in 1 Timothy 2:1-12 of whether his instructions are intended to regulate the conduct of both sexes during public worship, in ordinary life or in marriage. First, the study examines whether, in this letter, Paul gives any explicit indications of the context in which these instructions should be read. Next, it investigates Paul’s indications in his instructions for prayer (v. 1-8), decoration (v. 8-9), learning, teaching and the wielding of authority (v. 11-12). Many scholars are convinced that this passage was aimed at people’s conduct during public worship, but this study argues that Paul’s instructions could also refer to people’s conduct in ordinary life or marriage.

The instructions in 1 Timothy 2:8-15 interpreted within a broader contextual perspective of 1 Timothy Breed (2006a:247-263 and 2006b:453-463) has shown in two articles on 1 Timothy 2:8-15 that Paul does not give any indication in 1 Timothy 2 of whether his instructions to men and women are meant for public worship, ordinary life or marriage. Because Paul comments on the relations between men and women – an issue that is currently universally debated – in this article the broader textual context of 1 Timothy 2:8-15 is investigated to see whether it illuminates Paul’s instructions to men and women. The study focuses on the false teachings that Paul opposed, and on the aim of this letter. The structure of thought of 1 Timothy is analysed closely to determine whether there are references to marriage in 1 Timothy and to explore the possibility that in 1 Timothy 2:8-15 Paul actually states the true teaching concerning marriage in opposition to false teachings. This study concludes that there are strong indications that in 1 Timothy 2:8-12 Paul is considering the conduct between men and women in marriage, rather than conduct during public worship or in ordinary life.

Genesis 2 and 3 in 1 Timothy 2: a rationale for conduct in public worship, ordinary life, or marriage? In his exegesis of 1 Timothy 2:1-12, Breed (2006:247-261) shows that Paul does not give any indications in this text itself of whether the instructions in verses 8-12 were aimed at regulating conduct during public worship, in ordinary life or marriage. Paul supports the instructions he gives in 1 Timothy 2:11-12 in verses 13-15 by referring to Genesis 2 and 3. This article investigates whether there is any indication in Paul’s rationale of the context in which these instructions should be read. The study focuses on Paul’s reference to the order of creation (v. 13), Eve’s temptation (v. 14a), the state of transgression in which woman finds herself and her salvation by giving birth (v. 14b-15). This study concludes that in his references to Genesis 2 and 3, Paul does not give any indications of whether this instructions in 1 Timothy 2:8-15 deals with instructions for public worship, ordinary life or marriage.

I. Introductory RemarksOne of the bounties bestowed on Muslims by Allah (SWT) is the Shari'ah:the Divine guidance and code of conduct, necessary to achieve success inthis world and the world hereafter. For the colonists who subjugated Muslimlands it appeared necessary therefore to first deprive Muslims of their sourceof sustenance and symbol of identity. The first target of their attack was theShari'ah; every aspect of which was ridiculed, belittled or truncated. It isdifficult to improve upon Isma’il Raji al Faruqi‘s graphic description of thisonslaught. He who wrote:By the colonialists directly, or by their native stooges, everythingIslamic fell under attack. The integrity of the Qur’Gnic text, thegenuineness of the Prophet (SAAS), the veracity of his Sunnah, the perfection of the Sharibh the glories of Muslim achievementsin culture and civilization - none of them was spared. The purposewas to inject doubt in the Muslim’s confidence in himself . . .to subvert his Islamic personality . . . lacking the spiritual staminanecessary for resistance . . . the Muslim was turned into somethingneither Islamic nor Western, a cultural monstrosity of modemtimes ...

The perfect balance of Mind and body is considered as complete health in Pāli literature as well as in Ayurveda. Pāli literature and Ayurveda have their own identity as most ancient and traditional system of medicine in India. The universal teachings of the Buddha are the most precious legacy ancient India gave to the world. The teachings are a practical code of conduct, a way of purity and of gracious living. There is a scientific study of the truth pertaining to mind and matter, and the ultimate truth beyond. In fact, the Buddha should be more appropriately known as a super-scientist who studied the entire laws of nature governing the Universe, by direct personal experience. The Buddha's rational teachings are clearly explained in the Eight-fold Noble Path, divided in three divisions of Sīla (morality), Samādhi (mastery over the mind), Paññā i.e. ‘Pragya' (purification of the mind, by developing insight). In Ayurveda Psychotherapy can be done by Satvavajaya Chikitsa and good conduct. Aim is to augment the Satva Guna in order to correct the imbalance in state of Rajas (Passion) and Tamas (Inertia). ‘It was butcher work...the horrid screeching as the stake drove home; the plunging of writhing form, and lips of bloody foam.’ Bram Stoker's 1897 Gothic shocker introduced Count Dracula to the world, an ancient creature bent on bringing his contagion to London, the very heart of the British Empire. Only a handful of men and women stand between Dracula and his long-cherished goal, but they are vulnerable and weak against the cunning and supernatural powers of the Count and his legions. As the horrifying story unfolds in the diaries and letters of young Jonathan Harker, Lucy, Mina, and Dr Seward, Dracula will be victorious unless his nemesis Professor Van Helsing can persuade them that monsters still lurk in the era of electric light. The most famous of all vampire stories, Dracula is a mirror of its age, its underlying themes of race, religion, science, superstition, and sexuality never far from the surface. A compelling read, rattling along at break-neck speed, it is a modern classic. This new edition includes Stoker's companion piece, ‘Dracula's Guest’.

Pokémon Go is the most popular location-based game worldwide. As a location-based game, Pokémon Go’s gameplay is connected to networked urban mobility. However, urban mobility differs significantly around the world. Large metropoles in South America and Africa, for example, experience ingrained social, cultural, and economic inequalities. With this in mind, we interviewed Pokémon Go players in two Global South cities, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Nairobi (Kenya), to understand how players navigate urban spaces not only based on gameplay but with broader concerns for safety. Our findings reveal that players negotiate their urban mobilities based on perceptions of risk and safety, choosing how to move around and avoiding areas known for violence and theft. These findings are relevant for understanding the social and political aspects of networked urban spaces as well as for investigating games as venues through which we can understand ordinary life, racial, gender, and socioeconomic inequalities.

In 1500 m freestyle swimming races, pacing is generally represented by a parabolic or U-shaped curve indicating that swimming velocity is greatest at the start and the last laps of the race while swimmers maintain an even pace through the middle section of the race. However, there is no information to determine if 1500 m race winners select pacing different to other, less successful swimmers within the same competition. Therefore, this investigation aimed to describe the pacing strategies adopted by 1500 m freestyle competitive swimmers in World Championships (long course), from 2003 to 2019 to determine the most effective pacing to obtain victory or a medal. The official overall and split times for 1500 m freestyle races of the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) were obtained from the website of this organization. In total, data of 143 swimming performances (71 male and 72 female) were extracted. With the split times, lap times, and position were calculated across the race. To determine differences in the pacing between best- and worst-ranked finalist, swimmers in each race were divided into four groups based on the final position (1st vs. 2nd vs. 3rd vs. 4–8th). All the lap times of the winners of the race were faster than those of participants classified as 4–8th position for men and women races (p < 0.05). However, there were no differences in lap velocity among the different positions achieved at the end of the race when it was normalized by average race velocity. Additionally, there were no differences in the lap-to-lap variability among swimmers with different positions at the end of the race. In summary, both men and women elite swimmers selected parabolic pacing consisting of a fast start in the first lap, an even pace close to their average race velocity in the mid-section of the race (from 50 to 1400 m), followed by an end spurt in the final lap(s). This pattern was very similar in all finalists irrespective of the final position in the race. Hence, the obtaining of a medal in the World Championships was associated to possessing a faster average race velocity rather than a specific pacing profile through the race.

AbstractOsteoporosis is an important global health problem resulting in fragility fractures. The vertebrae are the commonest site of fracture resulting in extreme illness burden, and having the highest associated mortality. International studies show that vertebral fractures (VF) increase in prevalence with age, similarly in men and women, but differ across different regions of the world. Ireland has one of the highest rates of hip fracture in the world but data on vertebral fractures are limited. In this study we examined the prevalence of VF and associated major risk factors, using a sample of subjects who underwent vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) performed on 2 dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) machines. A total of 1296 subjects aged 40 years and older had a valid VFA report and DXA information available, including 254 men and 1042 women. Subjects had a mean age of 70 years, 805 (62%) had prior fractures, mean spine T-score was − 1.4 and mean total hip T-scores was − 1.2, while mean FRAX scores were 15.4% and 4.8% for major osteoporotic fracture and hip fracture, respectively. Although 95 (7%) had a known VF prior to scanning, 283 (22%) patients had at least 1 VF on their scan: 161 had 1, 61 had 2, and 61 had 3 or more. The prevalence of VF increased with age from 11.5% in those aged 40–49 years to > 33% among those aged ≥ 80 years. Both men and women with VF had significantly lower BMD at each measured site, and significantly higher FRAX scores, P < 0.01. These data suggest VF are common in high risk populations, particularly older men and women with low BMD, previous fractures, and at high risk of fracture. Urgent attention is needed to examine effective ways to identify those at risk and to reduce the burden of VF.
