AbstractPlatypezidae occupy an important basal position within the Muscomorpha. However, morphological analyses of larval Platypezidae are incomplete and early stage data is insufficient to inform phylogenetic analysis and recognition of groundplan characters and states within Muscomorpha. For example, knowledge is poor of the characters of respiratory organs, head, head skeleton, thorax and segmental sensilla. In this study we describe and compare these features of 16 species in 11 genera. The head appears as a distinct fleshy organ with atrium and antennae and maxillary organs separated on the dorsal surface. Head skeletons are characterised by an anteriorly projecting labrum and labium with laterally placed mandibles. The prothorax is frequently armoured with sclerotised regions and spicules. A repeated and uniform pattern of up to 11 pairs of sensilla circumvent each thoracic and abdominal segment. Respiratory organs vary little in size and arrangement of spiracular openings. Using a set of 43 larval and puparial characters and based on a Brachyceran outgroup, a sequence of genera is established which places Melanderomyia as the most basal. These results are compared with estimates of phylogeny based on adult characters.

The growing rift between biblical scholarship and the dogmatic and moral theologies of the Churches is a challenge to us all. But not only is it necessary to examine the presuppositions of the biblical scholars; it is also necessary to investigate the questions raised by their critics. Is there a uniform pattern in the questions raised? Do the critics provide any suggestions as to how the Scripture scholar should operate? Is there a common core which can be detected in the midst of the disquiet?

Profound changes occurred in central and northern Europe towards the end of the 3rd millennium bcX, when a uniform pattern of settlement, burial and material culture-the Corded Ware complexreplaced the diversity of the middle neolithic groups of the TRB (or Funnel Beaker Culture). Collective graves and large settlement sites gave way to individual burials in a largely dispersed pattern of settlement based on small sites. This was accompanied by a spread of sites into hitherto uncolonized areas, and a greater variety of locations used for settlement. This major change might at first seem to indicate a complete collapse of the earlier system, with an undifferentiated pattern replacing the apparent beginnings of hierarchies indicated by the Middle Neolithic. Kristiansen ( I 982) has recently suggested for Denmark that the middle neolithic system disintegrated, fitting a model of cyclical tribal development. It is suggested here, however, that the transformation of the middle neolithic pattern is better seen as a changed structure, which does not involve concepts such as disintegration or collapse, but marks an important shift in the organization of neolithic societies.

Abstract Double wall cooling, consisting of internal impingement cooling and external film cooling, is believed to be the most advanced technique in modern turbine blades cooling. In this paper, to improve the uniformity of temperature distribution, a flat plate double wall cooling model with gradient diameter of film and impingement holes was proposed, and the heat transfer and flow characteristics were investigated by solving steady three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with SST k-ω turbulence model. The influence of gradient diameter on overall cooling effectiveness and total pressure loss was studied by comparing with the uniform pattern at the blowing ratios ranging from 0.5 to 2. For gradient diameter of film hole patterns, results show that −10% film pattern always has the lowest film flow non-uniformity coefficient. The laterally averaged overall cooling effectiveness of uniform pattern lies between that of +10% and −10% film patterns, but the intersection of three patterns moves upstream from the middle of flow direction with the increase of blowing ratio. Therefore, the −10% film pattern exerts the highest area averaged cooling effectiveness, which is improved by up to 1.6% and 1% at BR = 0.5 and 1 respectively compared with a uniform pattern. However, at higher blowing ratios, the +10% film pattern maintains higher cooling effectiveness and lower total pressure loss. For gradient diameter of impingement hole patterns, the intersection of laterally averaged overall cooling effectiveness in three patterns is located near the middle of flow direction under all blowing ratios. The uniform pattern has the highest area averaged cooling effectiveness and the smallest non-uniform coefficient, but the −10% jet pattern has advantages of reducing pressure loss, especially in the laminated loss.

The polishing pad plays a significant role in the Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) process and its wear influences the surface accuracy of the polished wafer. A new polishing pad wear model is introduced and the law of pad wear along the pad radius is discussed, thus a new FAP with optimized pattern is designed and prepared in order. The flatness of the wafer lapped with a uniform pattern pad and that with an optimized pattern was compared. Results show that the PV value of the latter is lower that of the former.

One of the most conspicuous characteristics of the development of vertebrates is the adaptive specialization of pre-gastrular larvae. The eggs of vertebrates are laid upon land, in fresh water, in the sea, or within the mothers; the quantity of yolk they contain varies from the minute to the almost prodigious; they may develop at temperatures ranging from little above zero to little below 40° C., and at very different rates; the membraneous investments of egg and embryo are of widely different kinds; and so on. And accordingly we find that, although the strategy of pre-gastrular development is much the same in all vertebrates (inasmuch as all early development is directed towards the establishment of an axiate neurula of very uniform pattern), the overt tactics are in the very highest degree diverse. One need only reflect upon the variety of manoeuvres that lead to the formation of endoderm, or upon the very different patterns of chorda-mesodermal invagination, to be convinced that this proposition is a truism.

Shopping in the real world is becoming an increasingly interactive experience as stores integrate various technologies to support shoppers. Based on an empirical study of supermarket shoppers, the authors designed a mobile context-aware system called the Context-Aware Shopping Trolley (CAST). The purpose of CAST is to support shopping in supermarkets through context-awareness and acquiring user attention, thus, the authors’ interactive trolley guides and directs shoppers in the handling and finding of groceries. An empirical evaluation showed that shoppers using CAST behaved differently than shoppers using a traditional trolley. Specifically, shoppers using CAST exhibited a more uniform pattern of product collection and found products more easily while travelling a shorter distance. As such, the study finds that CAST supported the supermarket shopping activity.

AbstractPairs of male Convict Cichlids (Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum) were isolated from each other and then exposed in adjoining territories under one of two exposure conditions, either daily 20 minute exposure for 38-44 days or a massed continuous exposure for 24 or 28 hours. The incidence of biting and the duration of chin display for each fish was recorded. The duration of the chin display described a near uniform pattern of attenuation for both exposure conditions. The waning of the biting response was evident but it was more variable than the chin display. It was concluded that these behaviors both tend to habituate with repeated or constant exposure to the same stimulus source and that prolonged exposure facilitates the habituation of aggressiveness between territorial neighbors, thus promoting peace in a particular ecological niche.

The admirable article by Drijvers is a significant contribution to the study of early Syriac texts and certainly calls for further analysis. In the decipherment of lapidary texts the overriding factor is, of course, the script; and, fortunately, monumental Syriac script conforms to a fairly uniform pattern of development. The comments that follow are based principally on epigraphic considerations.
