Biosynthesis of tryptophan by rumen microorganisms was investigated using the continuous-flow artificial rumen apparatus, L-Serine-14C (U) was incubated with rumen microorganisms. Most of the serine was rapidly metabolized to volatile fatty acids. The synthesis of tryptophan was indicated by detection of label in the tryptophan area of the thin-layer chromatograms following column chromatography of saline and rumen liquor. Although labelled serine was utilized in synthesis of tryptophan, the proportion of tryptophan containing label was about 0.0001%.
