Windrow temperatures and chemical properties during active and passive aeration composting of beef cattle feedlot manure

Windrow composting emerged in the mid-1990s as an alternative manure-handling practice in Alberta’s cattle feedlot industry. This study compared two composting methods: active (turning) and passive aeration. Temperatures were monitored over the first 90 d and chemical properties over 188 d of composting. Pre- vs. post-turning sampling of the active treatment was also compared. Mean daily temperature was warmest at the bottom windrow location (53.6ºC) and coolest at the top (46.4ºC) in the active treatment, but warmest at the top (44.1ºC) and coolest at the bottom (33.9ºC) in the passive treatment. Final compost from the passive treatment had significantly higher total N (TN), total C (TC), electrical conductivity (EC), Na, and Cl than the active treatment. There were no significant treatment effects on C:N ratio, NH4-N, NO3-N, total P (TP), Kelowna-extractable P (KEP), pH, Ca, Mg or K. Both treatments showed substantial and non-significantly different C (71–80%) and N (44–58%) losses. Pre- versus post-turning sampling showed significant differences for some compost parameters, notably soluble salts. After the thermophilic phase, the passive treatment appeared only partially composted. Additional disadvantages of the passive treatment included lower windrow temperatures, which may fail to reduce pathogens, and higher EC, which could potentially limit the end use of passively aerated compost. Organic farming is one of the management strategies that improve productivity of marginal uplands. The study aimed to: (1) evaluate effects of various organic-based fertilizers on the growth and yield of corn; (2) determine the appropriate combination for optimum yield; and (3) assess changes on the soil physical and chemical properties. Experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design, with 3 replications and 7 treatments, namely; T0=(0-0-0); T1=1t ha-1 Evans + 45-30-30kg N, P2O5, K2O ha-1; T2=t ha-1 Wellgrow + 45-30-30kg N, P2O5, K2O ha-1; T3=15t ha-1 chicken dung; T4=10t ha-1 chicken dung + 45-30-30kg N, P2O5, K2O ha-1; T5=15t ha-1 Vermicast; and T6=10t ha-1 Vermicast + 45-30-30kg N, P2O5, K2O ha-1. Application of organic-based fertilizers with or without inorganic fertilizers promoted growth of corn than the control. But due to high infestation of corn silk beetle(Monolepta bifasciata Horns), its grain yield was greatly affected. In the second cropping, except for Evans, any of these fertilizers applied alone or combined with 45-30-30kg N, P2O5, K2O ha-1 appeared appropriate in increasing corn earyield. Soil physical and chemical properties changed with addition of organic fertilizers. While bulk density decreased irrespective of treatments, pH, total N, available P and exchangeable K generally increased more with chicken dung application.

The soil physical and chemical properties of four densities (A:2500/hm2,B:3300/hm2,C:4400/hm2,D:6600/hm2) of hybrid Larch plantations, Larix olgensis plantation(E) and Quercus mandsurica forest(F) were studied in Jiangshanjiao forest farm of Heilongjiang province of China. Soil bulk density, soil porosity, total N, total P, available N and available P were affected significantly by plantation density in hybrid Larch plantations. The lowest surface soil bulk density was in density 2500/hm2. Soil porosity of density 2500/hm2and 3300/hm2was bigger than that of density 4400/hm2and density 6600/hm2. Total N, total P and available N of density 4400/hm2and 3300/hm2were higher than that of density 6600/hm2and density 2500/hm2. Total N, total P, available N and available P of hybrid Larch plantations were not lower than that of Larix olgensis plantation. The results of the soil physical and chemical properties under different densities of hybrid Larch plantations and different types of forest seems to confirm that hybrid Larch plantation did not decreased the soil fertility, and the hybrid Larch plantation with densities of 3300/hm2and 4400/hm2could be conductive to improving the soil quality. The results would provide the theories basis for manage the hybrid Larch plantations.

Popular press articles report that consumers often experience inconsistent results with retail potting media; however, few reports in the popular or scientific literature have quantified the variability in media properties. The purpose of this study was to assess the variability in physical and chemical properties among different brands of retail potting media and within certain brands. Twenty-four different packages of branded media, and multiple packages of five brands, were acquired from nine regional and national retail chain stores located in the Salt Lake City, Utah, area. Samples were analyzed for five physical and nine chemical properties. The coefficients of variation (cvs) among brands for initial gravimetric water content, bulk density, porosity, water retention, and air space were 85%, 74%, 21%, 59%, and 44%, respectively. The cvs among brands for saturated media (SM) pH, SM extract electrical conductivity (EC), nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), total carbon (C), total nitrogen (N), and C:N ratio were 18%, 81%, 132%, 153%, 96%, 78%, 71%, 36%, 45%, and 49%, respectively. Only one of the 24 brands met all published standards for chemical properties of premium media. Thirteen of the brands did not meet standards for NO3-N; 12 did not meet standards for pH; and six did not meet standards for EC. There was more variation in physical and chemical properties among brands than within a brand of media. Label information describing media composition was not consistent with certain physical and chemical properties. No recommendations can be made which would allow consumers to select media that meets published standards. These results indicate better awareness of and/or adherence to standards is needed by the retail media industry to improve product quality and consistency.

The Mociar Forest Reserve has a great scientific interest due to the age of the oaks ranging from 400-500 years, which is why it is included in the protected area category. Over time, a series of studies have been carried out on the occurrence of the oak drying phenomenon in the Mociar Forest in order to develop plans for measures to prevent and combat oak drying. The main reason for this was to analyze the physical and chemical properties of soils. Considering the direct influence of soil characteristics on the development of forest species within the Mociar Forest, we proposed the creation of nine soil profiles located in areas considered representative of the studied area and the identification of the main physical and chemical parameters in the laboratory stage (the soil pH, the nitrogen amount, the total humus and C:N ratio variation). According to the four factors analysed a GIS spatial analysis model has been developed in order to identify the favourability and soil restriction for forest species in the studied area. It was also sought to obtain an overall picture of the distribution of these parameters on their qualitative classes as well as on the distribution classes of specific, dominant forest species. This was made possible by the use of G.I.S. technology and specific geospatial interpolation and spatial analysis tools.

The article mainly regards the soil of sugarcane fields in Guangxi as the research object. The study will discuss the changes of the sugarcane soil after vinasse application, including physical and chemical properties of soil, heavy metals content, soil microorganism and soil enzyme activities. The results showed that, vinasse application can reduce soil pH, improve the total N,P,K content; decrease the soil heavy metals, showing a significant impact on Cd. In addition, the influences to the number of culturable bacteria in the soil were more obvious than to the number of fungi and actinomycetes. And the activity of invertase in soil was also improved, which was advantaged of the carbon cycle in the soil. In short, vinasse can be used as a kind of liquid fertilizer to improve soil fertility and protect micro ecological environment of the soil.

<p>The argan tree (Argania spinosa) populations, endemic to South Morocco, have been highly degraded. Although the argan tree is the source of the valuable argan oil and is protected by law, overbrowsing and -grazing as well as the intensification and expansion of agricultural land lead to tree and soil degradation. Young stands cannot establish themselves; undergrowth is scarce due to the semiarid/arid climate and thus, goats, sheep and dromedaries continually browse the trees. Canopy-covered areas decrease and are degraded while areas without vegetation cover between the argan trees increase.</p><p>On 30 test sites, 60 soil samples of tree and intertree areas were studied on their soil physical and chemical properties. 36 rainfall simulations and 60 single-ring infiltration measurements were conducted to measure potential differences between tree/intertree areas in their runoff/erosion and infiltration properties. Significant differences using a t-test were found for the studied parameters saturated hydraulic conductivity, pH, electric conductivity, percolation stability, total C-content, total N-content, K-content, Na-content and Mg-content. Surface runoff and soil erosion were not statistically significant, but showed similar trends due to the higher complexity of runoff formation. The soil covered by argan trees generally showed less signs of degradation than intertree areas. With ever-expanding intertree areas due to the lack of rejuvenation of argan trees a further degradation of the soil can be assumed.</p>

Effect of Fertilizer (Organic + Inorganic + Dolomite) Combination to Improve of Growth Gaharu Plant (Gyrinops versteegii) and Characteristic of Soil Chemistry. This study aims to find combinations of fertilizer (organic + inorganic + dolomite) to promote the growth of gaharu plant and chemical properties of soil. This research was conducted in Tabanan Regency. The study was a randomized block design (RBD) with 7 treatments, each treatment was repeated three times to obtain 21 gaharu plants as a crop sample. The fertilizer formulations were tested as treatments as follows: A = without fertilizer (control), B = (50 g urea + 50 kg SP-36 + 50 kg KCl + 10 kg compost) + 50 g Dolomite) per tree, C = (100 g urea + 100 g SP-36 +100 g KCl + 7.5 kg compost + 75 g Dolomite) per tree, D = (150 g urea +150 g SP-36 + 150 g KCl + 5 kg compost + 75 g Dolomite) per tree, E = (200 g urea + 200 g SP-36 + 200 g KCl + 2.5 kg of compost + 100 g Dolomite) per tree, F = (200 g urea + 150 g SP -36 + 150 g KCl + 7.5 kg of compost + 100 g Dolomite) per tree, G = (200 g urea + 100 g SP-36 + 100 g KCl + 7.5 kg of compost + 75 g Dolomite) per tree. Parameters measured were plant height, girth of plants,  and chemical properties of the soil. Analysis of data using analysis of variance and Duncan test (0.05). The results showed that fertilization treatments significantly affected plant height, but not significant to girth of plant. The best fertilizer combinations was the treatment of C, which were increase plant height (26,35 cm), pH (6,7), total N (0,28 %) and other chemical properties of soil.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of seasonal flooding on the properties of floodplain soils of Wukari Area of Taraba state. The treatments consisted of five different locations of Gidan-Idi, Gindin-Dorowa, Tsokundi, Rafin-Kada and Nwuko and three different soil sample depths of 0-20 cm, 20-40 cm, and 40-60 cm laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) and replicated three times. Soil samples were collected from each plot in 2016 and 2017. All soil samples were analyzed for physical and chemical properties. The results obtained were subjected to analysis of variance and means separated using F-LSD test at p≤.05. The results of the soil properties analysis showed that some of the determined parameters were significantly different at the different sample locations at p≤.05. The soils of Wukari Floodplains are mostly clay loam in texture having very slightly acid to neutral soil reaction, moderate organic matter, low total N, moderate available P, low exchangeable bases and CEC. The flood plain soils were moderate in soil fertility, a confirmation of the general characteristic of Savanna soils. The soils were not deficient in micronutrients. Seasonal flooding had significant (positive) influence on some physical and chemical properties of the flood plains most particularly at Rafin-Kada.

A study of soil characteristics dryland productivity of the Supiturung Micro Watershed, Kediri Regency, was conducted by observing the physical conditions of the environment and identifying the morphological and physical properties of the soil in each horizon in the soil profile. Parameters observed were physical properties (texture, bulk density) and chemical properties (CEC, total N, organic C, and base saturation). Data on soil characteristics and plant productivity were then analyzed by correlation and regression to determine the relationship between the two. The results showed that the soil in the study area belongs to the order Inceptisols and Entisols with the dominant subgroup Typic Humudepts. Pineapple plants were spread at SST 5, 7, 9, and 10 with the productivity of 71.18%, 76.35%, 75.76%, and 72%, respectively. Meanwhile, sugarcane was spread in SPL 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 with the productivity of 71%, 77%, 73.43%, 76.29, and 70.81%, respectively. The results of the analysis show that the land characteristics that affect the productivity of pineapple plants are sand texture with a correlation coefficient value of 0.84 and a regression of 0.71 with a linear equation y= -0.07x + 67.57 R² = 0.53 Land with a sand texture class increasingly has low productivity.

<p>Carbon stock in peat soils is very high, it is necessary to prudent in its management because peat soils is emitting greenhouse gases such as CO<sub>2</sub> during land clearing due to oxidation of peat layer.  This research was conducted to study soil carbon stock stratification in relation to soil physical and chemical properties. The carbon stock stratification was based on maturity degrees of peat.  The study was conducted in Pulau Damar Village, Hulu Sungai Utara District, South Kalimantan Province on land use rubber.  The location of the study area was determined by using the purposive sampling method.  All data obtained were analyzed by Excel spreadsheets and drawn on a CorelDraw 12. The results showed that the amount of carbon stock was influenced by the maturity degrees of peats, peat sapric degres has higher carbon stock than of hemik and fibric with a ratio of  2.0: 1.5: 1.  The relationship between soil carbon stock with soil physic (Bulk Density, BD) and chemical properties (pH, Eh, Fe, and total-N) were not significantly.</p>
