Phytochemical screening of leaves and roots of stylochiton borumensis: A medicinal plant

Objective: The aim of this research was to isolate and identify flavonoids extracted from the leaves of Moricandia arvensis.Methods: The phytochemical screening reaction and thin-layer chromatography have been used to characterize the chemical groups, before they were identified by nuclear magnetic resonance.Results: The leaves contain essentially flavonoids, tannins, cardenolides, saponins, and alkaloids. The phytochemical investigation of the water-acetone extract led to the isolation of five flavonoids derivatives, namely: 5,7-dihydroxy-3,6,4’-trimethoxyflavone (1); 5,7,4’-trihydroxy- 3,6,8,3’-tetramethoxyflavone (2); 3,3’,4’, 5,7- pentahydroxy flavanone (3); 3-glucosyl 3’,4’,5,7 tetrahydroxy flavonol (4); and kaempférol-3- digalactopyranoside (5). The structures of 1–5 were identified by comparison of their spectral data with those reported in the literature.Conclusion: In this work, it was possible to isolate and identify five flavonoids after fractionation of the hydroacetone extract from the leaves of the medicinal plant M. arvensis.

Aim of the study was to analyze the phytochemical constituents and estimation of total flavonoids and phenolic compounds of leaves and roots of the medicinal plant Lagascea mollis. Methanol extract of dried leaves and roots of L. mollis was prepared by using soxhlet apparatus. The extract prepared was tested forpreliminary qualitative phytochemical screening, followed by the quantitative estimation of total flavonoids and phenols by spectroscopy. The selected plant parts were found to contain alkaloids, flavonoids and terpenoids in both parts and saponin is present only in leaf. In quantitative estimation the reports revealedthe presence 0.017 and 0.013 mgRE/g extract and 458.91 and 704.50 mgGAE/g extract total flavonoids and phenolic compounds in leaf and root extract respectively. These major phytoconstituents present in this species may be accounted as factors for the medicinal importance of L. mollis.

In the present study emphasize on phytochemical screening in leaves and roots of Barleria prionitis Linn. The extract of plant materials total ash content, extractive value, water soluble ash, and loss on drying values were identified. Medicinal plant materials are liable to contain pesticide residues, which accumulate from agriculture practices, such as spraying, treatment of soils during cultivation and administration of fumigants during storage. It is therefore recommended that every sample of medicinal plants used for such type of studies should be analyzed for the pesticidal residues. Therefore in the present study parts of the herb used for their antidiabetic potential were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides, which are persistent and remain in the food chain for longer periods. The samples of leaf and root of Barleria prionitis were ground coarsely and then preceded for the extraction procedure. The sample of extracts were analysed for residues of organochlorine pesticides by Gas Chromatography (GC). Analysis were carried out on a Schimadzu Model 2010 Gas Chromatograph (GC) equipped with 63 NI electron capture detector (ECD) and a capillary column HP ultra 2. The instrument was supported by Lab Solution software. The pesticide residues detected in them in the GC were within the limits. For phytochemical screening, the ethanolic and hydroalcoholic extracts obtained were prepared and subjected to various qualitative tests in order to reveal the presence or absence of common phytopharmaceuticals by using standard tests. Medicinal plants have bioactive compounds, which are used to treatments of various diseases. In the present study, Persicaria sagittata medicinal plant was used for the preliminary phytochemical screening. Methanol and petroleum ether were used as a solvent for obtaining the extraction of the plant. Both the extracts were further study for qualitative phytochemical screening using standard methods. Phytochemical screening shows that methanolic extract possesses the presence of tannins, flavonoids, and vitamin A as tannins and flavonoids are helpful for the uric acid stones. The study reveals that medicinal plant provides a basis of its use in medicine, improve to further drugs in the pharmaceutical area, and contains different biologically active constituents, and the secondary product is valuable of further analysis.

Bawang tiwai (Eleutherine americana Merr) is one kind of medicinal plant. To obtain an active substances with good physical and chemical properties, it is needs to do optimization of making extracts, one with solvent optimization. Type of solvent will determine the types of extracted substances in accordance with the polarity. On this research, extraction of bawang tiwai bulbs simplicia by maceration method using ethanol and water as solvent. This research is an experimental research with varying ethanol and water in a three comparison solvent that is water, ethanol, and mixture of water-etanol, then the yields is calculated. Furthermore, the data were analyzed statistically using ANOVA program to determine significant differences in the three yields. In each extract was conducted phytochemical screening to determine the content of secondary metabolites. The results showed significant differences in the yield of bawang tiwai extract with three treatments and two repetitions. The results of average yields using water as solvent is 8.75%, ethanol 5.3%; and water-etanol 8.31%

As in other districts of Nepal, medicinal plants have played a significant role in the life of local people of Baitadi and Darchula districts by providing products for trade, subsistence and traditional therapies. Present study analyzed the pharmacological activities of the species which had the highest informant consensus factor. The use of Asparagus racemosus as galactogogue with consensus factor 0.97, Berberis asiatica for eye troubles with 1.0, Cordyceps sinensis as tonic and longevity with 0.97, Curculigo orchoides as tonic and aphrodisiac with 0.96, Nardostachya grandiflora for epilepsy with 0.97 and Phyllanthus emblica as diuretic with 0.97 possessed the highest consensus factors and greatest affinity to the Ayurveda and phytochemical findings. Phytochemical screening and validity assessments of the medicinal plant widely used in traditional therapies are worthwhile. The findings with the maximum affinity of informant consensus factors and phyto-chemical validations provide the potential to identify which plants are most likely to be useful in the treatment of diseases.
