The intensity of sex expression is important in crops, including cucumber, since sex form and flowering have direct effects on date of harvesting and yield. Two groups of cucumber comprising a native variety (Odukpani) and elite varieties (Griffaton, Poinsett, Ashley, Marketmore and Monarch) were evaluated in 2015 and 2016 cropping seasons at the Teaching and Research Farm, College of Agriculture, Garkawa, Plateau State; to assess flowering, sex expression and some yield traits. The experimental design was randomized complete block design with the 6 cucumber varieties as the treatments, replicated five times. The two groups differed significantly (p < 0.05) in phonological, flowering and yield traits assessed. The elite varieties were superior with respect to flowering traits, as they flowered early. The intra-population hierarchical cluster analysis of quantitative traits grouped the elite varieties in one main cluster and the native variety (Odukpani) alienated as an outlier. The cluster plots showed that Odukpani was robust in vegetative growth, produced few but larger fruit size and flowering was delayed for over two weeks. Conversely, the elite varieties flowered early, produced more flowers and recorded superior number of fruits per plant. The profuse production of pistillate flowers by the elite varieties had pronounced yield advantage over the local variety. Hybridization between the two groups of cucumber would make a mark in the drive for sustainable cucumber fruit yield.

Abstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dosis kompos jerami dan pemangkasan terhadap pertumbuhan dan hasil tanaman mentimun sehingga dapat menghasilkan pupuk yang ekonomis dan berproduksi tinggi untuk penanaman mentimun serta interaksi kedua faktor tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK)  pola faktorial 4 x 3 dengan 3 ulangan yang terdiri dari 2 faktor. Pengamatan yang diteliti yaitu panjang tanaman, umur berbunga, jumlah bunga betina, diameter buah, jumlah buah pertanaman, panjang buah, berat buah pertanaman, berat per buah dan potensi hasil. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dosis kompos jerami berpengaruh sangat nyata terhadap diameter buah dan berpengaruh nyata terhadap berat per buah mentimun. Dosis terbaik pada hasil tanaman mentimun dijumpai pada perlakuan dosis kompos jerami 30 dan 20 ton/ha. Pada faktor pemangkasan berpengaruh sangat nyata terhadap panjang tanaman 21 HSPT dan 28 HSPT serta berpengaruh nyata terhadap jumlah bunga betina, panjang buah, berat buah per tanaman, berat per buah dan potensi hasil. pemangkasan terbaik pada pertumbuhan dan hasil tanaman mentimun dijumpai pada perlakuan tanpa pemangkasan dan pemangkasan tunas pada ruas 6-10.Effect of Straw Compost Dosage And Pruning on Growth and Cucumber Plant Results (cucumis sativus L.)Abstract : This study aims to determine the dosage of straw compost and pruning to the growth and yield of cucumber plants so as to produce fertilizer that is economical and high production for cucumber planting as well as interaction of these two factors. This study used Randomized Block Design (RAK) 4 x 3 factorial pattern with 3 replications consisting of 2 factors. Observations observed were plant length, flowering age, number of female flowers, fruit diameter, number of fruit crops, fruit length, fruit crop weight, weight per fruit and yield potential. The results of this study indicate that the dosage of straw compost has a very significant effect on the fruit diameter and has a significant effect on the weight per cucumber fruit. The best doses on cucumber yields were found in the treatment of straw compost doses of 30 and 20 tons / ha. In the pruning factor very significant effect on the length of plants 21 HSPT and 28 HSPT and significantly affect the number of female flowers, fruit length, fruit weight per plant, weight per fruit and yield potential. the best pruning on growth and yield of cucumber crops was found in the treatment without pruning and pruning of shoots in the 6-10 segments.

Cucumber yield in Nigeria is limited by low soil fertility. Therefore, field fertility and vine care experiments that have ability to moderate yield were conducted in the year 2015 cropping seasons. The experiment was located on farmer’s field at Abeokuta, Ogun State, Southwestern Nigeria to study the effects of NPK fertilizer and vine care on soil chemical properties, leaf nutrient content, growth and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). It was a 4 x 3 factorial experiment arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replicates. Four levels of NPK nutrient formulations (control, NPK15-15-15, NPK 20-10-10 and NPKMg 12-12-17-2) and three vine care types (unstaked, staked and trellised) were applied. Pre-experiment soil samples and soils from each plot at the end of the experiment were collected for soil chemical analysis. Leaf nutrient contents were determined. Plant growth and yield data were measured. Data collected were subjected to statistical analysis and the interaction between factors combined separated. NPK fertilizers significantly (P ≤ 0.05) increased soil N, P, K, Ca, Mg and leaf P, K, Ca and Mg concentrations, Cucumber fruit yield was increased by NPKMg 12-12-17-2 (90.5%), NPK 15-15-15 (60.4%) and NPK 20-10-10 (30.0%) compared with control. Application of vine care enhanced performance of cucumber, fruit yield was increased by trellised (34.0%) and staked (17.3%) compared with control. Combined application of NPKMg 12-12-17-2 and trellising was found most suitable for cucumber production.

A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of fertigation on the performance of cucumber variety ‘Vani’ at ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru during summer of 2015 and 2016. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications and consisted of ten treatments, which included different doses, sources of fertilizers and its frequency of application.  The pooled analysis of two years data revealed that the application of fertilizer dose (75:56:75 kg N:P2O5:K2O ha-1) through fertigation using water soluble fertilizers on bi-weekly basis resulted in higher values for vine length (217.50 cm), leaves vine-1 (83.50), mean leaf area (167.67 cm2) and mean dry leaf weight (0.532 g) at 50 days after transplanting, which remained on par with the same dose and source applied at weekly interval. These two treatments i.e T3 and T7 recorded higher values for the number of fruits vine-1 (14.20 and 14.00), fruit length (19.75 and 20.75 cm), fruit girth (16.97 and 16.12 cm) and fruit weight (313.17 and 306.05 g). All the fertigation treatments recorded higher yields over the conventional soil application of fertilizers to the tune of 10.75 to 45.60 per cent. Among the fertigation treatments, application of 100 per cent of fertilizer dose using water soluble fertilizers at weekly interval resulted in  significantly higher yield (69.50 t ha-1) compared to all  treatments except the treatment where the bi-weekly application of  the same dose of fertilizer through the same sources (69.20 t ha-1) was done. Application of 100 per cent fertilizer dose using water soluble fertilizers at weekly interval is the most efficient treatment for achieving economical cucumber fruit yield, economic return and saving water and mineral fertilizers.

Cross progeny (F3 and BC) of a Cucumis sativus var. sativus (GY 14) × C. sativus var. hardwickii (PI 183967) mating were used in conjunction with RFLP analysis to identify regions of the genome influencing yield and fruit quality, and to test the consistency of QTLs over environments and generations. QTLs affecting earliness, sex expression (F), fruit yield, and fruit size were identified. The number and map location of these QTLs was consistent over environments (years and plant densities). Differences in number and map location of QTLs were found when F3 and BC families were compared. Some of these differences could be attributed to disparities in population size (102 and 59 for F3 and BC families, respectively), dominance, and the amount of genetic information available (F3 > BC). Two shared chromosomes regions were identified that conditioned days to anthesis, fruit number, and weight. One of these regions coincided with the QTL affecting number of barren nodes, while the other was near the F-locus. Three to five QTLs were found to control fruit length (L), diameter (D), and L/D ratio. Depending on the locus, QTLs affecting fruit size appeared to express themselves with various degrees of dominance according to the direction of dominance observed in either parent.

Yam (Dioscorea spp.) is a valuable food security crop in West Africa, where 92% of the world production occurs. The availability of quality seed tubers for increased productivity is a major challenge. In this study, minitubers weighing 1, 3, and 5 g produced from virus-free single-node vine cuttings of two improved yam varieties (Asiedu and Kpamyo) growing in an aeroponics system were assessed for suitability in seed production at a population of 100,000 plants ha−1. A 3 × 2 factorial experiment with randomized complete block design and three replications was set up during the cropping seasons of 2017 to 2019 at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Research Station in Kubwa, Abuja, Nigeria. Results showed field establishments of 87%–97.8%. Yields differed with minituber size, variety, and cropping season; the highest was 31.2 t ha−1 in 2019 and the lowest, 10 t ha−1 in 2018 from 5 and 1 g Kpamyo minitubers, respectively. The estimated number of tubers produced per hectare by 1, 3, and 5 g minitubers was 101,296, 112,592, and 130,555, with mean weights per stand of 159.2, 187.3, and 249.4 g, respectively. We recommend using less than 6 g minitubers for seed yam production due to their high multiplication rates.

ABSTRACT Sesame is a plant with high morphological and physiological complexity, with great variability in growth habit. Quantitative growth analysis is an accessible and accurate tool for evaluating plant development and the contribution of different physiological processes to plant performance. In view of this, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the growth of sesame cultivars in two cropping seasons in the conditions of Mossoró-RN. Two experiments were conducted in Horta Didactics of UFERSA. The experimental delineation in each time was a randomized complete block design with four replications. The treatments were arranged in split plots where each experimental plot contained different sesame cultivars, CNPA G2, CNPA G3 and CNPA G4, and the subplots represented seven collection times, 21, 35, 49, 63, 77, 91 and 105 days after sowing (DAS). The growth of the sesame cultivars was slow at the beginning of the crop cycle, intensifying at the beginning of flowering (after 35 DAS). Among the physiological indexes studied, CNPA G4 cultivar was more efficient in relation to growth and varied depending on the cropping season.

ABSTRACT: In the last few cropping seasons, some soybean producers have tested the application of a hill drop sowing method, usually from three to four seeds every 30 to 40cm. However, there is a lack of information in the literature about the effect of this practice on soybean performance. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a hill drop sowing with different number of plants per hole on soybean performance. The study was conducted in Londrina - PR, Brazil, during the 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2016/17 cropping seasons. The experiment was a randomized complete block design with four replications and a 2x5 factorial scheme. The first factor consisted of two soybean cultivars, BRS 359RR and NK 7059RR analyzed in the first two cropping seasons and BRS 359RR and BRS 1010IPRO in the last cropping season. The second factor was constituted by five in-hill hole-spacing treatments (HS) (8, 16, 24, 32 and 40cm), with rows spaced 50cm apart. To maintain the same plant density in all treatments (270,000 plants ha-1), sowing was performed manually, being then thinned out. After thinning, the distribution was one plant per hole at HS8, 2 plants at HS16, 3 plants at HS24, 4 plants at HS32, and 5 plants at HS40. The agronomic performance of soybean in hill drop sowing with different number of plants per hole is similar to that of an equidistant distribution of plants.

<p class="1Body">Two field experiments were conducted from 2012 to 2013 cropping seasons to evaluate the efficacy and also determine the optimum rates of application for fish pond waste water in comparison with three other manures including one inorganic fertilizer and two organic manures under garden egg (<em>Solanum spp.</em>) crop.Garden egg was fertilized with pond waste water (PW), poultry manure (PM), pig manure (PG) and NPK15:15:15 at equivalent nitrogen (N) rates (0, 150, 300, 450 kg/ha). The treatments were arranged in a split plot under randomized complete block design (RCBD).The results obtained indicated a slight drop in soil pH but soil OM, total N, available P, exchangeable Ca and K increased generally with increasing rates of manures. The PW and PG treatments supported significantly (P&lt;0.05) the highest yields of the crop compared to PM and NPK with the 150 and 300 kg/ha treatments recording the highest increase. These results have shown that under the high rainfall and acidic soil conditions of Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria, PW is useful for the improvement of soil conditions and achievement of higher crop yields when applied at rates that supply N in the range of 150 – 300 kg/ha.</p>
