Weed competition has been a major challenge limiting crop yield especially in intercropping systems. Information on the use of chemicals for weed control in intercropping systems appears scanty. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of pendimethalin (P) at 1 kg active ingredient/ha, and hand weeding (HW) on mineral contents of the harvested grains and effects of various weed control treatments in maize, cowpea, and their intercrop. Field experiments were carried out during the 2017 and 2018 rainy seasons. The field layout followed complete randomized block design with three replicates. There were eight treatments: Sole Maize/Cowpea + P, Sole Maize/Cowpea + P + 1HW at 3 weeks after sowing (WAS), Sole Maize/Cowpea + P+ 2HW at 3 and 6 weeks after sowing (WAS), Sole Maize/Cowpea weedy check, Intercrop + P, Intercrop + P + 1HW at 3WAS, Intercrop + P + 2HW at 3 and 6 WAS and Intercrop weedy check. It was observed that, P+1HW and P+2HW in both cropping systems have significant effects (p<0.05) and effectively control weed and increase the mineral contents in maize, cowpea, and their respective intercrop. The study revealed that, the mineral composition of maize and cowpea grains were improved by using pendimethalin with supplementary hand weeding. The study recommends that farmers should adopt intercropping maize with cowpea using pendimethalin plus one supplementary hand weeding at 3 WAS.

Field experiments on the effectiveness and selectivity of herbicides use several active ingredients there were Sulfentrazone, Ethyl Pirazosulfuron, and Oxifluorfen with 2 varieties there were Peleton and Kanton tavi. The purpose of the study was to discover the most effective and selective herbicide active ingredients. The study was conducted from February to May 2019. This study used a randomized block design with 7 treatments, namely A (Kontrol), B (Oksifluorfen, peleton), C (Etil pirazosulfuron, peleton), D (Sulfentrazon, peleton), E (Oksifluorfen, kanton tavi), F (Etil pirazosulfuron, kanton tavi), G (Sulfentrazon, kanton tavi). Each treatment was repeated 4 times. The data were analyzed used analysis of variance (ANOVA), further testing used the DMRT test with a 5 % level. The results showed that the application of herbicides made from sulfentrazone, ethyl pirazosulfuron, oxifluorfen in peleton varieties and kanton tavi can suppress weed growth in the research area. The best weed control results were shown by herbicide treatment with sulfentrazone as active ingredient in the kanton tavi variant. The best long bean production results were shown by herbicide treatment with sulfentrazone in peleton varieties. The application of herbicides with active oxifluorfen made no symptoms of phytotoxicity, but decreased the yield of kanton tavi varieties and peleton varieties.

The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications and eight weed control treatments viz., weedy check, polythene mulching as pre emergence (PE), pendimethalin30EC (PE), chlorimuron ethyl 9g ha-1as post emergence (POE), quizalofop ethyl 50g ha-1 (POE), imazethapyr 100g ha-1 as early post emergence (EPOE), one hand weeding at 40 days after sowing (DAS) and two hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAS. The results showed that polythene mulching had the lowest weed dry matter due to effectively suppression of weed emergence. It was followed by twice hand weeding at 20 and 40 days after sowing. Weed index was found to be the highest with weedy check (42.10%) followed by the pre-emergence application of pendimethalin (19.09%). The effect of herbicide applied as pre-emergence was subdued at this belated stage, which may possibly be on account of longer period after application and restricted effective residual period. Plant height, number of pods per plant and grain yield of soybean was found to be highest in the treatments twice hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAS as well as polythene mulching. However, the net return and B:C ratio was lower in comparison to imazethapyr and quizalofop ethyl due to higher cost of labour and polythene material respectively. On an average, the application of imazethapyr as early post emergence (3.17) and quizalofop ethyl (3.02) gave significantly highest B:C ratio than the other treatments for soybean.

Field experiments were conducted to analyze impacts of weeds on biomass of two varieties of rain fed upland paddy (cv. Radha-4 and Neemai) during the Kharif session of 2004-2005 in the Terai region of Nepal. Four experiments were conducted in randomized block design with three replications. A total of 55 weed species were identified with densities of 240 individual plants per sqm in Radha-4 and 236 individual plants per sqm in Neemai. The annual net primary productivity of paddy crop was maximum (2329.3 g m-2 yr-1 in Radha-4 and 2170.3 g m-2 yr-1 in Neemai) in weed-free plots and lowest (1659.8 g m-2 yr-1 in Radha-4 and 1659.4 g m-2 yr-1 in Neemai) in unweeded plots. Hand weeding was done twice at 25 and 50 days after broadcasting and proved to be better than herbicides in the paddy biomass. The mean maximum biomass of paddy in weed free plots was 2418.7 and 2270.3 g m-2 in Radha-4 and Neemai. This biomass was similar to twice hand weeded plots being 1% lower in both the varieties. Compared to weed-free plots the biomass reduction in Radha-4 and Neemai in herbicides treated plots was lower by 1.4% in both the varieties. Compared to weed-free plots the biomass reduction in unweeded plots was recorded 29% lower in Radha-4 and 23% in Neemai. The weed biomass was highest in unweed plots (516.4 and 436.6 g m-2) and lowest (169.3 and 192.3g m-2 in twice hand-weeded plots. The net annual primary productivity of weeds was highest (437.9 g m>-2 yr-1 in Radha-4 and 376.6 g m-2 yr-1 in Neemai) in unweeded plots and lowest (119.7 g m-2 yr-1 in Radha-4 and 145.5 g m-2 yr-1 in Neemai) in twice hand weeded plots. Field experiments were conducted in western Atakora, Benin, to determine the critical time period of weed competition in hand-weeded corn. Weeds were removed until different crop growth stages and then allowed to reemerge. Other treatments began weed control at different growth stages (four-, eight-, and ten-leaf stages and flowering) and were maintained until harvest. One treatment was permanently kept weed-free and one treatment was uncontrolled until harvest. Yields without weed competition ranged from 2.8 to 3.4 t ha−1. As expected, yield loss increased with duration of weed infestation and ranged from 38 to 65% compared to permanent weed-free plots. In three out of four site-years, the critical period for weed control started at the four- to six-leaf stage and continued until ten-leaf stage or flowering of corn. Approximately four hand-weeding applications were required in this critical period of weed control.

The results of the field experiment carried out during kharif season of 2010 at agronomy department farm, Dr.P.D.K.V.,Akola revealed that N,P,K uptake by black gram (Phaseolus mungoL.) and weeds were significantly higher under weed free and weedy check treatments among all of the weed control treatments. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design replicated three times with thirteen treatments, in that chemical and cultural treatments were compared with weedy check and weed free control. Herbicide application in general and pre-emergence application of pendimethalin @1.5kg/ha in particular reduced the nutrients removal by weeds and enhanced the nutrient uptake by the crop followed by cultural practices of two hand weeding at 15 & 30 days after sowing. The pre-emergence application of pendimethalin in @ 1.5 kg/ha recorded highest nutrient uptake in grain (34.92, 6.50, 34.16 NPK kg/ha resp.) and strover (63.26, 10.60, 57.60 NPK kg/ha resp.) among all the weed control treatment except weed free treatment. The crude protein content of grain was the highest with pre-emergence application of pendimethalin @ 1.5 kg/ha (21.65) followed by pendimethalin @ 1.0 kg/ha (21.55).

ABSTRACT: Over the years, cultivated areas of sorghum have expanded considerably in Brazil. Chemical weed control has become an obstacle due to the scarcity of herbicides registered for the crop. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of weed control and selectivity of herbicides applied in pre and post emergence in the crop. Two experiments were conducted. In one of them, the hybrid BRS 310 was used while DKB 550 was used in the other. The experiments were performed in the field in randomized block design, evaluating seven treatments with four replications. The used treatments were: 1. Hand weeding, 2. S-metolachlor (1,440 g a.i. ha-1), 3. S-metolachlor (1,440 g a.i. ha-1) + atrazine (2,000 g a.i. ha-1), 4. atrazine (2,000 g a.i. ha-1), 5. atrazine (3,000 g a.i. ha-1), 6. atrazine (2,000 g a.i. ha-1) + mineral oil (0.25%), and 7. atrazine (2,000 g a.i. ha-1) + mineral oil (0.5%). It was verified that post-emergence atrazine was efficient in the weed control and selective to the sorghum crop, not affecting productivity, except in mixture with mineral oil (0.5%). S-metolachlor cannot be recommended in pre-emergence for the tested cultivars because it is not selective, reducing plants and productivity.

To study the weed management in drilled paddy an experiment was conducted at Agriculture Research Station, Anand Agricultural University, Derol Dist: panchmahal, Gujarat during kharif seasons of the years 2012-13, 2013-14 ,2014-15 and 2015 -16 . Ten treatments for weed management were studied in randomized block design with four replications. Results that all the growth and yield attributes except plant height and test weight were significantly influenced due to different weed control treatments. The grain and straw yield of drilled paddy were also altered significant due to weed control treatments. In general, T2 (two hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAS) recorded the highest yield among all. It was, however, at par with three other treatments which included pre and post emergence application of herbicides. Since, the application of Oxadiargyl @ 90 g/ha f/b Bisbyribac sodium @ 25 g/ha at 20 DAS is one among the dual application of herbicide, it can be recommended for drilled paddy in options of two hand weeding.

An experiment was conducted during kharif season of 2014 at crop cafeteria form of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Jaunpur to assess the effect of different weed control methods to yield of low land rice (Oryza sativa L.). Weed competition will reduce rice yield. It has been conducted from 15 June 2014 until October 2014 with variety Pusa Sugandha-5 (It is non basmati variety but aromatic) nursery was done on 15 June and 23 days old seedling were transplanted. The experiment laid out using Randomized Block design with five treatments (A = unweed control (Weedy check), B = manual weeding (Two hand weeding), C = herbicide containing Penoxulam + Cyhalofop- butyl, D = Bispyribac sodium, and E = 2, 4 D + Methyl metsulfuron). The results showed that weed control using herbicides containing Bispyribac sodium and 2.4 D + Methyl metsulfuron showed similar results as manual weed control on rice yield. The maximum weed index was observed in weedy check plots.

Field experiments were conducted at the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Killikulam, India during the kharif (July to November) and summer (December to April) seasons of 1999 and 2000 in a randomized block design. The treatment consisted of three pre-emergence herbicides (pretilachlor + safener 0.3 kg ha-1 4 days after sowing [DAS], butachlor 1.0 kg ha-1 8 DAS and pendimethalin 1.0 kg ha-1 8 DAS) and one early post-emergence herbicide (butanil 3.0 ha-1 15 DAS), each in combination with mechanical or hand weeding 30 and 45 DAS. In addition, green manure (Daincha) intercropping and incorporation, mechanical and hand weeding twice alone (25 and 50 DAS) were compared with the unweeded check. The results revealed that the pre-emergence application of pretilachlor + safener 0.3 kg ha-1 + hand weeding twice (30 and 45 DAS) promoted higher yield attributes and maximum yield in wet-seeded rice.

A field experiment was conducted at ZARS, Jhabua (M.P.) during kharif 2014 to find out most suitable and efficient method of weed control in soybean. The experiment consisted of nine treatments laid out in randomized block design with three replications. All the weed management practices led to significant reduction in density and dry matter of weeds as compared to weedy check. Two hand weeding (20 & 40 DAS) recorded lowest weed density (4.9/ m2), weed dry matter (22.35 g/m2) with highest weed control efficiency of 59.67% and found at par with the application of Chlorimuron Ethyl @ 9gm /ha + Quizalofop-p-ethyl @ 50 g /ha (density 5.48/ m2, dry matter 26.62 g/m2 and WCE of 51.97%) and Imazethapyr @ 35 g /ha + Imazamox @ 35 g/ha (density 6.13/ m2, dry matter 26.00 g/m2 and WCE of 53.08%). Maximum yield of 1782 kg/ha was recorded in two hand weeding (20 & 40 DAS) closely followed by Chlorimuron Ethyl @ 9gm /ha + Quizalofop-p-ethyl @ 50 g /ha (1723 kg/ha) and Imazethapyr @ 35 g / ha + Imazamox @ 35 g/ha (1697 kg/ha). Reduction in soybean yield in weedy check to be recorded is 38.78 per cent when compared to weed free and 36.68 per cent in comparison to Chlorimuron Ethyl @ 9gm /ha + Quizalofopp-ethyl @ 50 g /ha. However, highest Benefit to Cost ratio is recorded in Chlorimuron Ethyl +Quizalofop-p-ethyl (3.26) closely followed by Imazethapyr + Imazamox (3.22) and Weed free (3.21).
