The current research studies the effect of cold joints on the behavior shear and flexure of High Strength Concrete (HSC) beams caused by delayed casting sequence during the hot weather in summer of Iraq.Fresh concrete should be kept alive during the various casting batches for concrete element by re-vibration. However, the over vibration caused loss in homogeneity and it is difficult to keep the workability of concrete during hot weather due to the effect of setting time.To deal with this problem of improper casting sequence, which eventually leads to the formation of cold joints, it will be used sugar waste (named as Sugar Molasses (SM)) is a by-product resulted from refining process of sugar as a delayed agent to increase the setting time in order to prevent early set of concrete due to adverse effects in construction joint of hot weather.In the current study, the first objective aims to investigate some of fresh and hardened mechanical properties of HSC (with high cement content) using SM at percentages of (0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) % from the weight of cement under the concept of sustainable development. The second objective aims to investigate the location and surface texture effect of horizontal and vertical cold joints on the flexural and shear behavior of beam with/without SM. This objective includes testing of twenty four plain concrete beam of (110×110×650 mm) under two point load; half of them casting without roughing (smooth) the old layer and the other casted after roughed it.SM content of 0.2% of cement weight can improve compressive strength by about 11.2% at 28 days and delay initial setting time by about 4.617 hours (277 minutes). No adverse effect on concrete have been observed at this dosage of SM concentration for the ages of concrete cylinders studied. Delays in the setting of concrete at this dosage of SM content help in reducing the early setting of concrete and therefore reduced the impact of the cold joints formation in concrete beams under Iraqi hot weather condition. The failure load for the beams with SM of smooth and rough vertical joints is in the range between (1.95 - 2.12) and (1.46-1.37); respectively times that of the case of beam without SM.

This paper addresses the influence of cold weather on the compressive strength of high performance concrete with silica fume under different curing days. Test variables of this study are weather condition (5°C, -5°C and-15°C) and different curing days (7days and 28 days). In this work, the specimen was designed a water-binder ratio of 0.34. One batches of concrete were prepared for each mixing hour, and the compressive strength of cylindrical concrete specimens was measured after 7 and 28 days. Test results for concrete compressive strength show that the concrete’s best mechanical performance occurred when there was the least difference between ambient temperature and concrete temperature, that is, during the later hours of the day in hot weather conditions.

This paper address the mechanical properties of high performance concrete exposed to hot weather in terms of compressive strength and the modulus of elasticity. The variable of this study is curing temperature of 35 °C and 50°C under hot weather condition.

Background: Commercial broiler is a rapidly growing sector in Bangladesh. The broilers are supplied with the balanced ration prepared from a number of ingredients which are not available uniformly throughout the years. On the other hands, manufactured feeds are costly and inconvenient for the rural farmers. This study is undertaken to use unconventional feed ingredients aiming to decrease the broiler production cost. Method: A total of ninety-nine day- old broiler chicks (Hubbard) of either sex were used in this study in 3 treatment groups to assess processed unconventional feed item (shoti, blood meal, poultry dropping and molasses) on growth and profitability upon rearing for 60 days. Broilers were reared in dip litter system and were fed ad libitum on conventional and unconventional diet dividing into 3 treatment diets namely, treatment diet 1 (T1: Conventional as control), treatment diet 2 (T2: unconventional with blood meal and shoti), and treatment diet 3 (T3: unconventional with blood meal, shoti, poultry droppings and molasses) throughout the trial period. Treatment group 1 (T1) was used as control. Results: Broilers fed on control diet (conventional feed) achieved higher (P<0.01) body weight, while the broilers offered diets with the highest amount of unconventional feed had the lowest body weight. Increased (P<0.01) feed intake was observed during 21days and 49 days of age when broilers fed diets with the supplementation, but no significant differences were found among the groups in terms of feed consumption during 33 day of age. FCR differed significantly (P<.01) throughout the trial period with the broilers fed diets without supplementation of unconventional feed item had the superior FCR than the others. Mortality rate was 6.06%,9.09%, and 9.09% in treatment group I, treatment group II, and treatment group III respectively while live weights, feed conversion and feed consumption was unaffected by all the dietary groups with/without incorporation of unconventional feed item up to day 60 days of age. Statistically significant (P<0.01) decreased live weight was observed among the treatment groups in 60-day-old birds. Productivity and cost-benefit analysis were performed. Conclusion: Use of unconventional feed ingredients in broiler production greatly reduces the feed cost with little hampering the growth rate and hence, it is profitable for the farmers.
