The chapter discusses library support services in a distance education system and their value and importance in the overall development of a learner in general and a distance learner in particular. The chapter also traces how emerging digital technologies allow libraries to offer efficient support services to distance learners. This case of Distance Library Services at a university in India describes the evolution, experiences and challenges of offering distance library services through the university. The chapter focuses on information literacy and use of social networking tools. Development of information literacy is critical for distance learners, and social networking tools based on Web 2.0 technologies may provide library services and impart information literacy to distance learners. The chapter concludes with some suggestions pertaining to opportunities and future propositions.

Dr Math is an online math tutoring service hosted by the CSIR Meraka Institute in South Africa, which aims to support secondary school learners with Mathematics. The service is predominantly accessed through the mobile social networking service MXit. Since 2007, students from the Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Information Technology (EBIT) at the University of Pretoria, have been assisting “Dr Math” in fulfillment of a compulsory undergraduate module, Community-Based Project. They have supported 28,000 registered users in user initiated interactions. This purpose of this paper is to describe the mobile scaffolding environment and scaffolding practices as well as the tutor support that enhance the Dr Math service as a sustained example of mobile learning.

Many authors agree that it is essential to integrate social networking tools and sites with education. On the other hand, environmental education represents an umbrella for many forms of education that already exist and new ones that remain to be created. Bearing this in mind as well as the increasing use of Facebook in education, the key aspect of this chapter focuses on scientific research about modeling the use of Facebook in environmental education among students of the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Organizational Sciences, Serbia. The research clearly points out the educational benefits of implementing Facebook with, subsequently, a significant improvement of students’ environmental awareness. The investigated model of using Facebook, presented in the chapter, could be useful to other educators, giving them suitable information about the possible ways to improve students` achievements in environmental and other kinds of higher education.

The paper examines the accessibility, accuracy, currency and user-friendliness in ten selected library websites of the colleges affiliated to the University of Delhi. It further, discusses services and facilities being offered by the websites. The data were collected through a well-structured checklist from the selected colleges under study. The study reveals that maximum number of college libraries have mentioned information related to introduction 9(90 %), library staff 8(80 %), library hours 6(60 %) and membership 6(60 %) on their websites. However, study also report that none of the library websites/web-pages have features of social networking tools, feedbacks, regular updates and they also lack in providing question papers, news-clippings, user manual and single window search. The study findings reveals that Deshbandhu College library scored thirty eight (38) out of43 which is highest (ranked 1st) whereas Ramjas College scored only five (05) out of 43 and stands last. The study suggests, for carrying out such evaluative studies which is the need of hour to enable the institutions to update their websites periodically and come up with flying colours on user’s expectations

Background: When midwives are not treated with respect and their professional competencies are not recognised, their professional dignity is violated. Objective: This study explored and described how the professional dignity of midwives in the selected hospital can be enhanced based on their experiences. Research design: A descriptive phenomenological research design was used with in-depth interviews conducted with 15 purposely selected midwives. Ethical considerations: The Faculty of Health Sciences Research Ethics Committee of the University of Pretoria approved the study. The research was conducted in an academic tertiary hospital with voluntary participants. Findings: To dignify midwives it is essential to enhance the following: ‘to acknowledge the capabilities of midwives’, ‘to appreciate interventions of midwives’, ‘to perceive midwives as equal health team members’, ‘to invest in midwives’, ‘to enhance collegiality’, ‘to be cared for by management’ and ‘to create conducive environments’. Conclusion: The professional dignity of midwives is determined by their own perspectives of the contribution that they make to the optimal care of patients, the respect that they get from others and the support that hospital management gives them. With support and care, midwives’ professional dignity is enhanced. Midwives will strive to render excellent services as well as increasing their commitment.

The present paper focuses on the explore of social media such as Face book, Twitter, Whatsapp, etc. to work as an effective tool for imparting information or knowledge and prove helpful in making awareness among Library and Information Science (LIS) Professionals of University Libraries of University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad as most important aspect of social mediaas its emphasis on online collaboration and sharing because it has social networking, user centric characteristics. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire that was circulated among the LIS Professionals of University Libraries of University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad randomly. Present article reports the survey of social media, in making awareness among LIS Professionals. Analysis will help the LIS professionals in deriving the benefits of Social media.

<p class="apa">The study examined ‘Students’ Involvement in Social Networking and attitudes towards its Integration into Teaching. The study was carried out in the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of 17,618 undergraduate students enrolled into full time degree programmes in the University of Uyo for 2014/2015 academic session. The design of the study was survey design with ex-post facto approach. Random sampling technique was used to select 1730 students from the 12 faculties in the University. The instrument used for the study was ‘Students’ Social Networking and Attitude Questionnaire which was validated by an expert in curriculum studies and an expert in measurement and evaluation in the University of Uyo. Cronbach’s Alpha Statistical method was used to determine the reliability coefficient of .70 for the instrument. Two research questions and two null hypotheses tested at .05 level of significance guided the study. Mean and Standard Deviation were used to answer research questions; Independent t-test and Analysis of Variance were used to test the hypotheses. The results show that there is significant difference in involvement of university undergraduate students in Social Networking based on course of study, level (year) of study and age. Female undergraduate students’ involvement in social networking is higher than that of their male counterparts; but male undergraduate students showed a higher positive attitude towards integration of social networking into teaching and learning.</p>
