Abstract In this study, we investigated the use of ultrasonic technology in assisted injection molding and mold designs. We used an ultrasonic device installed in a mold to vibrate a melt directly, thereby converting kinetic energy into thermal energy. In addition, we developed three flat specimens of different thicknesses (3, 1, and 3-1-3 mm) produced by ultrasonic-assisted injection molds. An ultrasonic oscillation device 45 mm in diameter was placed in the cavity and used to vibrate a polycarbonate or a polycarbonate with 30% glass fiber melt at a frequency of 20 kHz. Furthermore, cavity pressure sensors were positioned at the front and rear of the vibration region for analyzing the melt flow behavior under ultrasonic-assisted injection molding conditions. Because of the absorption of ultrasonic energy, local heat was generated inside the resin, thus forming an oscillatory flow during the packing and holding stages, improving the flow characteristics of the melt, and changing the melt flow behavior around the skin layer to reduce the molecular orientation and high shear effect. The freezing rate of the melt was also reduced to eliminate the glass fiber streaks, floating fibers, and fiber orientation, particularly for thinner parts; the hesitation phenomena were then improved to increase the weld line strength.

Glass-fiber-reinforced thermoset composites have long been used by the plastics industry. Two primary reasons for using glass fibers as reinforcement of thermosets are: (1) to improve the mechanical/physical properties (e.g., tensile modulus, dimensional stability, fatigue endurance, deformation under load, hardness, or abrasion resistance) of the thermosets, and (2) to reduce the cost of production by replacing expensive resins with inexpensive glass fibers. In place of metals, the automotive industry uses glassfiber- reinforced unsaturated polyester composites. One reason for this substitution is that the weight per unit volume of composite materials is quite low compared with that of metals. This has allowed for considerable reductions in the fuel consumption of automobiles. Another reason is that composite materials are less expensive than metals. The unsaturated polyester premix molding compounds in commercial use are supplied as sheet molding compound (SMC), bulk molding compound (BMC), or thick molding compound (TMC) (Bruins 1976; Parkyn et al. 1967). These molding compounds can be molded in standard compression or transfer molds. The basic challenge in molding unsaturated polyester premix compounds is to get a uniform layer of glass reinforcement in place in the die cavity while the resin fills the cavity and reaches its gel stage during cure. Temperature, mold closing speed, pressure, and cure time are all functions of the design of the part being produced. The flow of the mixture through the gate(s) can result in variations in strength across the part due to fiber orientation during the flow. The precise end-use properties depend on the fiber orientation, fiber distribution, and fiber content in the premix compounds, which are greatly influenced by the processing conditions. Since the mechanical properties of the molded articles depend strongly upon the orientation of the glass fibers, it is important to understand how to control fiber orientation during molding. Unsaturated polyester accounts for the greater part of all thermosets used in glass-fiber-reinforced plastics. Glass-fiber-reinforced unsaturated polyesters offer the advantages of a balance of good mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties. Depending upon the application, a number of additives are employed to provide specific products or end-use properties.

AbstractIn this study, an injection molding machine with a low-fracture-fiber mechanism was designed with three stages: a plasticizing stage, an injection stage, and a packing stage. The fiber-fracture behavior is observed under the screw (plasticizing stage) of low-compression/shear ratio for the ultra-long fiber during the molding process. The molding material employed in this study was 25-mm-ultra-long-glass-fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP/U-LGF). In addition, a thickness of 3 mm and a width of 12 mm spiral-flow-mold were constructed for studying the melt flow length and flow-length ratio through an experiment. The experimental results showed that the use of an injection molding machine with a three-stage mechanism decreased the fiber length when the screw speed was increased. On average, each fiber was shortened by 50% (>15 mm on average) from its original length of 25 mm. Longer glass fibers were more resistant to melt filling, and as the fiber length was reduced, the mixing between the melt and glass fibers was improved. Thus, the melt fluidity and fiber ratios were increased. In addition, the mixing/flow direction of the melt had an impact on the dispersion and arrangement of glass fibers, thus the tensile strength of PP/U-LGF increased.

This work presents the influences of glass fiber content on the mechanical and physical characteristics of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) reinforced with glass fibers (GF). For the mechanical characterization of the composites depending on the GF reinforcement rate, tensile tests are carried out. The results show that increasing the GF content in the polymer matrix leads to an increase in the stiffness of the composite but also to an increase in its brittleness. Scanning Electron Microscope analysis is performed, highlighting the multi-scale dependency on types of damage and macroscopic behavior of the composites. Furthermore, flammability tests were performed. They permit certifying the flame retardancy capacity of the electrical composite part. Additionally, fluidity tests are carried out to identify the flow behavior of the melted composite during the polymer injection process. Finally, the cracking resistance is assessed by riveting tests performed on the considered electrical parts produced from composites with different GF reinforcement. The riveting test stems directly from the manufacturing process. Therefore, its results accurately reflect the fragility of the material used.

Weldlines are a type of defect in polymer injection molding and are known to impair the appearance and mechanical strength of the molded product. A previous study involved designing and fabricating an induction heating and cooling mold that incorporates an induction coil, allowing it to rapidly heat up. The study verified that the use of this mold prevents weldlines and improves the surface properties of the molded product. Although it is possible to prevent impairment of the external appearance caused by weldlines or the exposure of glass fibers on the surface when the mold is applied to glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic, the results of the previous study indicated that it did not significantly improve the mechanical strength. Hence, the present study involved designing and fabricating an injection mold capable of melt flow control in addition to induction heating and cooling by incorporating a melt flow control mechanism that employs a movable core pin to control the flow direction in the mold used in the previous study. The mold is used to form samples of short- and long-glass fiber reinforced polypropylene while simultaneously performing heating and cooling and melt flow control to obtain samples with smooth flat surfaces in which the exposure of glass fibers is prevented while exhibiting increased bending strength.

Due to the sharp and corrosion-prone features of steel fibers, there is a demand for ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) reinforced with nonmetallic fibers. In this paper, glass fiber (GF) and the high-performance polypropylene (HPP) fiber were selected to prepare UHPC, and the effects of different fibers on the compressive, tensile and bending properties of UHPC were investigated, experimentally and numerically. Then, the damage evolution of UHPC was further studied numerically, adopting the concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) model. The difference between the simulation values and experimental values was within 5.0%, verifying the reliability of the numerical model. The results indicate that 2.0% fiber content in UHPC provides better mechanical properties. In addition, the glass fiber was more significant in strengthening the effect. Compared with HPP-UHPC, the compressive, tensile and flexural strength of GF-UHPC increased by about 20%, 30% and 40%, respectively. However, the flexural toughness indexes I5, I10 and I20 of HPP-UHPC were about 1.2, 2.0 and 3.8 times those of GF-UHPC, respectively, showing that the toughening effect of the HPP fiber is better.

Short glass fiber-reinforced (SGFR) thermoplastics are used in many industries manufactured by injection molding which is the most common technique for polymeric parts production. Glass fibers are commonly used as the reinforced material with thermoplastics and injection molding. In this paper, a critical plane-based fatigue damage model is proposed for tension–tension or tension–compression fatigue life prediction of SGFR thermoplastics considering fiber orientation and mean stress effects. Temperature and frequency effects were also included by applying the proposed damage model into a general fatigue model. Model predictions are presented and discussed by comparing with the experimental data from the literature.

This study analyzes the fundamental principles and characteristics of the microcellular foaming process (MCP) to minimize warpage in glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP), which is typically worse than that of a solid polymer. In order to confirm the tendency for warpage and the improvement of this phenomenon according to the glass fiber content (GFC), two factors associated with the reduction of the shrinkage difference and the non-directionalized fiber orientation were set as variables. The shrinkage was measured in the flow direction and transverse direction, and it was confirmed that the shrinkage difference between these two directions is the cause of warpage of GFRP specimens. In addition, by applying the MCP to injection molding, it was confirmed that warpage was improved by reducing the shrinkage difference. To further confirm these results, the effects of cell formation on shrinkage and fiber orientation were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, micro-CT observation, and cell morphology analysis. The micro-CT observations revealed that the fiber orientation was non-directional for the MCP. Moreover, it was determined that the mechanical and thermal properties were improved, based on measurements of the impact strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, and deflection temperature for the MCP.

Continuous glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites produced by using hybrid yarns show reduced fiber-to-matrix adhesion in comparison to their thermosetting counterparts. Their consolidation involves no curing, and the chemical reactions are limited to the glass fiber surface, the silane coupling agent, and the maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene. This paper investigates the impact of electron beam crosslinkable toughened polypropylene, alkylene-functionalized single glass fibers, and electron-induced grafting and crosslinking on the local interfacial shear strength and critical energy release rate in single glass fiber polypropylene model microcomposites. A systematic comparison of non-, amino-, alkyl-, and alkylene-functionalized single fibers in virgin, crosslinkable toughened and electron beam crosslinked toughened polypropylene was done in order to study their influence on the local interfacial strength parameters. In comparison to amino-functionalized single glass fibers in polypropylene/maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene, an enhanced local interfacial shear strength (+20%) and critical energy release rate (+80%) were observed for alkylene-functionalized single glass fibers in electron beam crosslinked toughened polypropylene.
