The aim of this study is to examine the impact of legal audit quality on the likelihood of accounting fraud, for a sample of 48 companies listed on the Tunisian stock market over the period between 2014 and 2018. Based on the logit panel regression, we have shown that the audit firm's membership in one of the Big networks and the rotation of external auditors are two major determinants in the reduction of cases of fraud in Tunisian companies. In addition, the results showed that joint audit deteriorates the quality of auditing and thus increases the risk of fraud. This study provides new insights in terms of legal audit and fraud risk in the Tunisian context based on the econometrics of panel data, which is a valuable method to measure the impact of several actions alone or simultaneously. It has allowed us to analyze the behaviors of companies by considering the effect of many proxies of legal audit quality. JEL Classification Codes: G32, M42, C23.

ABSTRACT: This instructional case focuses on an accounting and financial reporting fraud involving DHB Industries, Inc., the nation's largest manufacturer of bullet-resistant vests. Three executives of this Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) registrant, including its founder and CEO, masterminded a large-scale fraud that grossly misrepresented DHB's financial statements. The three executives colluded to conceal their misdeeds from the four accounting firms that served as the company's independent auditors over the course of the fraud. In late 2010, a federal jury convicted DHB's former CEO and COO of multiple counts of fraud and related charges. This case addresses a wide range of auditing issues raised by the DHB fraud, including the identification of fraud risk factors, auditing of related-party transactions, the impact of frequent auditor changes on audit quality, and the internal control reporting responsibilities of auditors.

SYNOPSIS Auditing standards require external auditors to inquire of client-employees regarding their knowledge of actual or suspected fraud (PCAOB 2010b; AICPA 2016). However, the extant literature provides little guidance on practical methods that auditors can employ to increase the likelihood of fraud disclosure and improve audit quality. Drawing upon best practices in the whistleblowing literature and psychological theories on self-regulation, we experimentally test the efficacy of two practical strategies that auditors can employ during the fraud inquiry process: actively promoting statutory whistleblower protections and strategically timing their fraud inquiries. Our results indicate that auditors are more likely to elicit client-employee fraud disclosures by actively promoting statutory whistleblower protections and strategically timing the fraud inquiry to take place in the afternoon, when client-employee self-regulation is more likely to be depleted. These two audit inquiry strategies should be of considerable interest to audit practitioners, audit committees, and those concerned with improving audit quality. Purpose – This research aims to explore whether recent audit reforms have improved auditor objectivity when performing non-audit services. Design/methodology/approach – In two separate experiments, the authors tested whether external and internal auditors' inventory obsolescence judgments are influenced by their client's (or company's) role as the buyer or seller in an acquisition setting. Findings – External auditors assessed the likelihood of inventory obsolescence objectively, regardless of their consulting role in the acquisition setting. Internal auditors assessed the likelihood of inventory obsolescence as higher when consulting for the buyer than when consulting for the seller, consistent with the supposition that the buyer would prefer to write-down inventory and negotiate a lower purchase price, whereas the seller would prefer the inventory not be written down. Practical implications – From a regulatory perspective, external auditors may be relying too much on the work of internal auditors if internal auditors' lack of objectivity as consultants extends to their assurance role. Originality/value – This paper extends prior research in the area of internal and external auditor objectivity and is the first paper to include both subject groups in the same experiment. It also addresses the current policy issues that may have a significant effect on audit quality and auditor liability.

The study aimed to measure the impact of applying governance standards in evaluating the quality of internal audit in Yemeni private universities. To achieve this, the researcher followed the descriptive and analytical approach and employed a questionnaire to collect data from a sample that included (68) participants. After conducting relative analysis, governance was at an average level of (64.9%). There was also a slight variation in the level of implementation, as the dimension of transparency and disclosure was the most frequent dimension, followed by accountability and independence. Further, there was a medium level of adherence to internal auditing standards at a relative weight (65%). The level of commitment to the audit dimensions was as follows: managing the internal audit activities (67%), communicating the results (66%), assessing the risk and control management (64%), and planning and implementing the audit process (62%). and The study also found that the combined governance standards (transparency and disclosure, accountability, independence) increase the quality of the internal audit in Yemeni private universities and the highest dimensions of governance standards affecting the quality of internal auditing are the dimension of independence (80.3%), accountability (71.7%), and disclosure and transparency (63.7%). In light of this, the study recommended adopting governance standards as an integrated approach to achieve quality performance in private Yemeni universities; spreading the culture of governance in private universities among their leaders and staff by holding training courses, seminars, and conferences in order to be accepted and absorbed. In addition, governance should be included in some related academic courses in the disciplines of administrative and accounting sciences. Keywords: governance standards, internal audit quality assessment, private Yemeni universities.

The current study therefore, sought to examine the impact of audit quality and FRS practices of firms on their financial success. Samples firms listed on Malaysian stock market were selected from the construction sector for the period of 2010 to 2013. Data was collected from the published annual reports and notes to the financial statements. To assess the level of compliance with the regulations and provisions of the Financial Reporting Standard (FRS) in Malaysia, content analysis was carried out. Firm’s engagement with established audit firm is used as a proxy for audit quality, and return on assets is used as a measure of firm performance. Panel data analysis was employed in analysing the data and testing the stated hypotheses. The use of panel data reveals that practices of FRS by firms is significantly and positively related to their financial performance. The results also indicate that audit quality has a significant positive impact on business financial success. The study therefore recommends that the management of listed construction firms improve their practices of FRS and employ the service of established audit firms in support of financial success. Regular training may be organised to provide construction companies with practical guide for better compliance with the FRS in Malaysia.

Abstract Globally, studies examining the nexus between global crude oil prices and food commodity prices in domestic markets are scant. Employing a panel data model of 34 provinces in Indonesia from 2010 - 2017, this study investigates the impact of global crude oil’s price change on some local food commodity prices (imported soybean, local soybean, local rice, and local maize). Previous studies found that local food commodity prices in some countries were not affected by global crude oil prices; however, this study, by controlling other factors which could affect local commodity prices, finds different results. This study’s findings indicate that global crude oil prices could affect Indonesia’s local commodity prices due to higher shipping costs in import activity. In addition, global commodity prices are also proved to affect all commodities examined in this study, which implies that local food commodity prices in Indonesia are influenced by the international market. This study provides input to policymakers in Indonesia to consider the movement of global crude oil prices and global commodity prices in stabilizing local food commodity prices in Indonesia, especially the imported commodities.
