Rapid and noninvasive detection methods of seed vigor, an important index to evaluate seed quality, have been the research focus in recent years. In this paper, the detection method of pea seed vigor based on hyperspectral imaging technology was researched. First, the spectral images of different vigor grade samples with artificial aging were captured, and the original spectrum was pretreated with multiple scattering correction. Secondly, SPA and PCA were used to select respective bands. Finally, PLS-DA and LS-SVM model were established to identify the seed vigor of the pea seed, based on the whole band spectrum, the characteristic bands extracted by SPA and PCA respectively. The results showed that PLS-DA and LS-SVM models are effective, but LS-SVM had better performance. Through comparison, the method using full band spectrum was more accurate, the efficiency of method using 5 characteristic bands extracted by PCA was the highest while the way of extracting the representative band by SPA was the most meaningful to this study which achieved similar accuracy to the full band with only 20 bands. The SPA-LS-SVM method afforded the recognition accuracy (100%) for modeling set and validation set used to determine the vigor of pea seeds. The overall results suggest that hyperspectral imaging technology is useful for classification of different vitality pea seeds with non-destructive manner, which can provide a basis for further development of online scoring devices

Research on pea seed storage and the identification of efficient seed vigor tests for this species is still insufficient, especially for cultivars that produce wrinkled seeds used for consumption in natura. The objective of this study was to verify the accuracy of tests to assess the physiological potential of pea seed lots stored in different environments. Four seed lots of two cultivars, 'Telefone Alta' (indeterminate growth habit) and 'Itapuã' (determinate growth habit) were stored under different environmental conditions for 8 months: a) laboratory uncontrolled b) dry and cold chamber (10 ºC and 30% RH), c) controlled environment (20 ºC and 70% RH). Seed vigor (accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, seedling length and seedling emergence) was evaluated initially and after four and eight months storage. Results showed that the use of seed lots of high initial physiological potential is fundamental for guaranteeing the desired performance of pea seeds during storage. Wrinkled pea seeds should be stored between harvest and sowing in an environment in which the sum of the relative humidity (%) and temperature (°C) does not exceed 70. Physiological potential of pea seeds should be evaluated by at least two vigor tests; consideration to accelerated aging and electrical conductivity tests is recommended.

Abstract: Nitric oxide (NO) can act in biochemical pathways of the germination process; however, there is little information about how it acts on the performance of pea seeds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological and biochemical effects of NO on pea seed germination and vigor. Pea seeds cv. Itapuã 600 obtained from three seed lots with different levels of physiological quality were sown in a substrate moistened with water (control) or sodium nitroprusside (SNP) solution, a NO donor (50 μM), to assess germination, vigor, activity of antioxidant enzymes, reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation, and amylase activity. NO application does not alter pea seed germination, but it increases vigor. It is more effective in seeds with lower physiological potential. In addition, NO leads to reduction in oxidative stress, favors the translocation of reserves to the embryo, and has potential for use in the treatment of pea seeds to increase seed vigor.

A three-factor experiment was set at the Horticulture Laboratory, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur to study the effects of the controlled deterioration (CD) on the pea seeds at the constant temperature of 350C. The 3 factors considered were: 3 pea seed sources (Rangpur Local/RL, Dinajpur Local/DL and Thakurgaon Local/TL); 3 ageing periods (0, 8 and 16 days); and 3 seed moisture contents (12, 16 and 20% MC). The 27 treatment combinations compared in the CRD with the 3 repetitions for the 8 arenas were: % germination, % abnormal seedlings, % dead seeds, % soil emergence and seedling evaluation test for the root and shoot lengths as well as their dry matter contents. Identical prototypes of notable (5-1% level) degradations were recorded everywhere. But the disparities were lucid under the extreme stresses. Moreover, highly noteworthy (1% level) relations were traced amid all the traits ranging from -0.9847 (soil emergence × abnormal seedling) to 0.9623 (soil emergence × normal seedling). So, the CD technique was very effectual in judging the physiological statuses of the seed sources studied. Thus, the germination test might be add-on by a vigor test, the latter of which could be assessed by quantifying the seedlings’ root and shoot lengths and/or their dry matter accumulations. Moreover, in the seed quality certification, the suitable limits of vigor for the chosen traits could also be got by this technique. But the seeds of several pea varieties should be exploited to fix-up the agreeable limits of the traits. Furthermore, to save time, the ageing period could be squeezed by raising the seed MC.

Three field pea genotypes (NS Junior, Jezero and Javor) have been assessed for effects of genotype and mechanical damage during harvest on most important parameters of the physical quality of seed. Four harvest treatments were examined (hand harvest, mechanized harvest at 500, 650 and 800 rpm). After harvest, purity of harvested seed and percentages of seeds damaged by insects, seeds with cracked seed coat and broken seeds were analyzed. Highest contents of seeds with damaged seed coat (9.0%) and broken seeds (11.3%) were found in Javor, the genotype with largest seeds. After seed processing, seed vigor, germination, proportion of atypical seedlings and 1000-seed weight were determined. Lowest values of seed vigor and germination (79.8% and 84.9%, respectively) and the largest proportion of atypical seedlings (11.4%) were found in the genotype Javor. Highly significant correlations were found between seed vigor, germination and atypical seedlings on one side and 1000-seed weight on the other (r=-0.53, r=-0.51, and r=0.60, respectively). Damages that increase the portion of atypical seedlings have the largest impact on the quality of pea seeds. This characteristic is determined by the genotype, which should be kept in mind when defining objectives of field pea breeding programs.

Near-infrared (874–1734 nm) hyperspectral imaging technology combined with chemometrics was used to identify parental and hybrid okra seeds. A total of 1740 okra seeds of three different varieties, which contained the male parent xiaolusi, the female parent xianzhi, and the hybrid seed penzai, were collected, and all of the samples were randomly divided into the calibration set and the prediction set in a ratio of 2:1. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to explore the separability of different seeds based on the spectral characteristics of okra seeds. Fourteen and 86 characteristic wavelengths were extracted by using the successive projection algorithm (SPA) and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS), respectively. Another 14 characteristic wavelengths were extracted by using CARS combined with SPA. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and support vector machine (SVM) were developed based on the characteristic wavelength and full-band spectroscopy. The experimental results showed that the SVM discriminant model worked well and that the correct recognition rate was over 93.62% based on full-band spectroscopy. As for the discriminative model that was based on characteristic wavelength, the SVM model based on the CARS algorithm was better than the other two models. Combining the CARS+SVM calibration model and image processing technology, a pseudo-color map of sample prediction was generated, which could intuitively identify the species of okra seeds. The whole process provided a new idea for agricultural breeding in the rapid screening and identification of hybrid okra seeds.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the efficiency of fungicides for pea seed treatment against damping-off caused by Rhizoctonia solani and to verify their effects on physiological seed quality. 'Mikado' pea seeds were treated with the following fungicides: Carbendazim, Carbendazim + Thiram, Captan, Iprodione, Iprodione + Thiram, Metalaxyl-M + Fludioxonil, Pencycuron, Procymidone and Tolyfluanid. Control seeds were treated with deionized water. Physiological seed quality was evaluated with the following tests: germination, first count, accelerated aging and electrical conductivity. Seeds were sown in soil inoculated and no inoculated with R. solani. The experimental design was completely random with four replications. Seedling emergence was reduced in inoculated soil and the best treatments for R. solani control were Carbendazim, Pencycuron, Iprodione and Carbendazim + Thiram. Captan reduced seed physiological quality in both the laboratory and field.

During the past 2 decades, automated plug production in the flower seed industry has created important requirements by growers for high-quality flower seeds. Using computerized imaging technology, a new seed vigor testing system, Seed Vigor Imaging System (SVIS), was developed at The Ohio State University. By analyzing the digital images of seedlings, it can detect and measure the length of hypocotyls and radicles separately, and then generate a value for the growth and uniformity each. This system provides a fast, labor-saving and objective approach to measuring seed quality. In this study, its capacity and correlation with field performance was studied and compared with other traditional tests, i.e. standard germination test, germinate rate, and accelerated aging test. Five species (dianthus, cleome, rudbeckia, salvia, and lettuce) were selected and their quality was tracked continuously by SVIS and other mentioned tests. It was found that stressed test (ageing test) was able to detect the quality deterioration earlier than others under ideal conditions, but SVIS could generate much more information, such as the growth, uniformity, and vigor level of the seed lot. Therefore, SVIS following 3-day ageing was developed and shown to be the most sensitive and comprehensive vigor test for those ornamental species mentioned above. Being fast and objective, this system will also benefit the global seed trade by providing a unique quality standard. In addition, it can also be of great usage to seed companies and germplasm centers worldwide for the routine quality track during shipment/storage and inventory management.
