The paper begins with a definition of the concept of emojis (pictograms) before outlining their history, functions, differences in comparison with emoticons, and the problems surrounding the establishment of emojis as a universal language. In the second half of the paper, ten exercises are presented that work with pictograms (based on Szerdi 2018, 2019; Szőcs 2020; Tóth 2020) and can make it easier for students to learn about various areas of linguistics.

Syncretism as language phenomenon, linguistic term and categoryThe author deals with syncretism as both non-linguistic, and linguistic term, notion, language universal, language phenomenon, resulting and deeply interconnected with the language economy principle. First, a broad definition of the term syncretism is given, then the author focuses on theoretical aspects of syncretic issues, taking into account research works by many world-known linguists, predominantly Russian, Czech and some others. Second, syncretism is compared with other notions and terms, used sometimes to described very similar language phenomena, very close to syncretism, such as neutralisation, homonymy, polyfunctionality, polysemy, contamination, language play. The author comes to the conclusion that very often the same language phenomena are called using various terms, syncretic phenomena are not the exception; in various studies the term and notion of syncretism can be understood in different ways.

The article presents an approach to the development of international indicators of education for sustainable development. It could aff ord to increase the comparability of the results of the global monitoring in diff erent countries. The problem of comparability of the results of national monitoring systems requires coordination of a number of indicators at the global level. However, some indicators are understood quite clearly, others are far from global comparability. There is no universal language of general scientifi c categories of sustainable development. It is not clear what skills for sustainable development are equally important for people all over the world. Reaching a global consensus on these issues is hampered by diff erences in the curriculum of diff erent countries and national cultures. We discuss the use of the universal fl exible modules in global tracking that can be used in diff erent ways in diff erent countries. The feasibility of building monitoring bottom-up is justifi ed. The need for using specifi c cultural concepts of ESD in diff erent countries (groups of) is discussed. This may contribute to make a global semantic fi eld of sustainable development ideas in variety forms of their metaphorical representation. It is proposed to supplement the subject of the global monitoring with dynamics of everyday concepts of sustainable development.

The definitions of music published in the last decades, particularly the one formulated by Alan Merriam (1964) in conjunction with the field of ethnomusicology, have broadened the scope of music by identifying it as a product of human behaviour in a cultural context. The definition of music has not only raised the level of awareness of the nature of cultural diversity of our societies, but nurtured trends in ‘multicultural’ perspectives in music education. With these trends, musical materials from diverse cultures are being introduced to curricula, especially in Europe and the USA. In spite of this well-intentioned effort, difficulties continue to be encountered at the implementation level, where teaching and evaluation methods designed for Western musical material are being applied without discrimination across cultural boundaries. When ill-applied in cultural areas where the concept of ‘music’ is not similar to that of the Western world, this rather colonial-type practice produces devastating results. Here it is argued that in its present design music education is, for the most part, insensitive to cultural diversity. Like music, it is a culturally defined mode of discourse. Its application outside the context of origin requires utmost fidelity in order to preserve its authenticity.

Abstract:Approximationism as an art form is defined in a deep definition of human nature, as a model maker, in correlations and autocorrelations with varying degrees of naturalness, human cognition, is defined as symbolic dynamism and abstractionism, in a spectrum ,with algorithms and data mining, defined as approximationism in visual declaration, symbolic mathematics, natural language and metaphors, an ontological API and Taxonomy in cognition. Various metrics of formal elements of approximationism for art therapy are the topic of a future publication. Keywords: approximationism, ontology API, taxonomy, complexity theory, metrics, visual dynamism, visual declaration, graphics calculators, docking stations. What:Mathematics is a universal language, but Godel's incompleteness theorem proves it’s incompleteness, not even closed form expressions for natural language or for consciousness are possible, so approximations are the solution, every model we make and data we collect are mere approximations. Is art too an approximation and a visual description of a model? This is approximationism, the art of approximations of life, art as an approximation. We explore the use of approximation art in art therapy and data mining or sketch to coding, for the formal definitions and the programming of approximationist art therapy.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a narrative review of the literature on substance use/misuse within an intellectual disability (ID) population. The paper is focused on the prevalence, motivation and implications of substance use as well as the interventions for misuse. Design/methodology/approach – Research focused on substance use and ID (IQ of 70 or less with onset in the developmental period) were considered. Findings – The findings indicate a disparity between research findings regarding the prevalence of substance use/misuse within ID populations. Previous research indicates that individuals with ID may use/misuse substances as a form of relief or respite from negative experiences. Although there is a clear need for intervention, many of the ID population do not engage with generic interventions for substance misuse. Additionally, professionals responsible for the provision of interventions identify a lack of training and support to meet the needs of ID populations. Research limitations/implications – Minimal research in this areas, barriers to language and demographics being underreported. Practical implications – Highlights problems with the current evidence base and barriers this poses indicates a need for further research and intervention. Social implications – Implications for the equality for individuals with an ID and their access to appropriate intervention. Focus on prevention of offending behaviour and intervention as appose to management. Originality/value – In order to build a greater understanding of this issue, a shared universal language and definition of ID must be implemented. Further research to improve the understanding of why those with ID misuse substances is imperative before designing and implementing useful interventions.

1. The definition of “normal” stars in spectral classification changes with time; at the time of the publication of theYerkes Spectral Atlasthe term “normal” was applied to stars whose spectra could be fitted smoothly into a two-dimensional array. Thus, at that time, weak-lined spectra (RR Lyrae and HD 140283) would have been considered peculiar. At the present time we would tend to classify such spectra as “normal”—in a more complicated classification scheme which would have a parameter varying with metallic-line intensity within a specific spectral subdivision.

An ideal definition of a reference coordinate system should meet the following general requirements:1. It should be as conceptually simple as possible, so its philosophy is well understood by the users.2. It should imply as few physical assumptions as possible. Wherever they are necessary, such assumptions should be of a very general character and, in particular, they should not be dependent upon astronomical and geophysical detailed theories.3. It should suggest a materialization that is dynamically stable and is accessible to observations with the required accuracy.

No paper of this nature should begin without a definition of symbiotic stars. It was Paul Merrill who, borrowing on his botanical background, coined the termsymbioticto describe apparently single stellar systems which combine the TiO absorption of M giants (temperature regime ≲ 3500 K) with He II emission (temperature regime ≳ 100,000 K). He and Milton Humason had in 1932 first drawn attention to three such stars: AX Per, CI Cyg and RW Hya. At the conclusion of the Mount Wilson Ha emission survey nearly a dozen had been identified, and Z And had become their type star. The numbers slowly grew, as much because the definition widened to include lower-excitation specimens as because new examples of the original type were found. In 1970 Wackerling listed 30; this was the last compendium of symbiotic stars published.

During the past investigations of immunoferritin localization of intracellular antigens in ultrathin frozen sections, we found that the degree of negative staining required to delineate u1trastructural details was often too dense for the recognition of ferritin particles. The quality of positive staining of ultrathin frozen sections, on the other hand, has generally been far inferior to that attainable in conventional plastic embedded sections, particularly in the definition of membranes. As we discussed before, a main cause of this difficulty seemed to be the vulnerability of frozen sections to the damaging effects of air-water surface tension at the time of drying of the sections.Indeed, we found that the quality of positive staining is greatly improved when positively stained frozen sections are protected against the effects of surface tension by embedding them in thin layers of mechanically stable materials at the time of drying (unpublished).

Numerous studies have dealt with the cytochemical localization of cytochrome oxidase via cytochrome c. More recent studies have dealt with indicating initial foci of this reaction by altering incubation pH (1) or postosmication procedure (2,3). The following study is an attempt to locate such foci by altering membrane permeability. It is thought that such alterations within the limits of maintaining morphological integrity of the membranes will ease the entry of exogenous substrates resulting in a much quicker oxidation and subsequently a more precise definition of the oxidative reaction. The diaminobenzidine (DAB) method of Seligman et al. (4) was used. Minced pieces of rat liver were incubated for 1 hr following toluene treatment (5,6). Experimental variations consisted of incubating fixed or unfixed tissues treated with toluene and unfixed tissues treated with toluene and subsequently fixed.
