Through descriptive design, this study sought to establish the compatibility of the A-level Textile Technology and Design (TTD) curriculum with the industry requirements in Harare, Zimbabwe. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative techniques through a questionnaire and interview schedule. The population comprised of 120 A-level learners and five teachers from five schools as well as eight factory managers. Forty learners who had studied the subject for at least one year and teachers based on their experience in teaching were purposely selected to constitute the sample. Three factory managers from clothing industries in Harare City were conveniently selected based on their willingness to participate in the study. Data was treated through descriptive statistics and thematically. The study established that learners did not acquire adequate essential concepts in designing, pattern making, computer aided designing, use of industrial sewing equipment and business enterprise which are critical for business or employment in the clothing industry. Some study areas were found to be compatible with the requirements of the clothing industry and entrepreneurship, but the content was not well taught. Teachers were not proficient with new skills and knowledge in the updated syllabus. The majority of the learners was either neutral, disagreed or strongly disagreed to have acquired the intermediate skills related to the updated Textile Technology and Design Curriculum. Therefore, a more skills based curriculum is recommended. In-service training of TTD teachers in business and entrepreneurship skills is also recommended.

The teaching of an introductory course in American Government can be a difficult and frustrating endeavor under even the best of circumstances. Given the general level of cynicism and/or lack of interest by large numbers of Americans regarding politics and politicians, the task of generating student enthusiasm, or even mild interest, toward the subject matter can indeed be an arduous one. When the teaching of such a course takes place in a business college, and when the student audience is “captive” to a college requirement that all students must take the course, the task can be rendered considerably more formidable. For the past six years I have been teaching such courses at business colleges — one year at Bryant College in Rhode Island, and the following five years at Bentley College in Massachusetts.

The author adverts to a former paper “On the Meteorolog of the Deccan,” published in the Philosophical Transactions for 1835, and after referring to the conclusions at which he arrived in that communication, states that, in the discussion of the meteorological observations which form the subject of the present paper, and which were made over a very extended area, at different heights, some being hourly and running through several years at the same station, it is very satisfactory to find that they fully establish the accuracy of the former deductions. He remarks that, as some of the observations now discussed were hourly records continued through considerable periods of time, an opportunity has been afforded of investigating abnormal conditions, which the former limited number of diurnal observations did not permit; and gives the following review of what appears to be normal and abnormal conditions. The annual and daily range of the barometer diminishes from the sea-level up to the greatest height observed, 8640 feet at Dodabetta, from a mean annual and mean daily range at Madras of 0·735 and 0·122 respectively to 0·410 and 0·060 at Dodabetta;—the annual range would appear to increase, about and beyond the northern tropic, as the annual range at Calcutta (not by hourly observations) is 0·911; but the diurnal range is somewhat less (0·115) than at Madras. At no one of the places of observation, even taking the maximum pressure of one year with the minimum pressure of another year, does there appear to have been a range of pressure equivalent to an inch of mercury; nevertheless in the Cyclones, or rotatory storms, there occurs at times a range of pressure of nearly two inches of mercury within forty-eight hours; but it is shown from a compa rison of the simultaneous records on board ship, where these great depressions were noted, with the records at the observatories on shore, that the great depressions occurred within very limited areas.

AbstractThe hijab has been the subject of public and academic debates that have polarized scholars, politicians, and activists. Opinions on veiling range widely: while some view veiling as an oppressive practice, others regard veiling as an expression of women's agency and empowerment. Solidarity practices, such as movements against compulsory veiling or actions encouraging non-Muslim women to temporarily wear the hijab, are some of the ways in which activists have tried to show solidarity with Muslim women. In this qualitative study, data from the content analysis of the online platforms of two media campaigns, together with in-depth interviews with Iranian women living in Belgium, were triangulated. Women's perceptions of two solidarity campaigns were explored: the anti–compulsory veiling movement My Stealthy Freedom and the pro-acceptance World Hijab Day campaign. The findings raise questions about the effectiveness of transnational feminist campaigning in solidarity with Muslim women and, more generally, how the notion of solidarity is conceptualized in feminist scholarship.

Objective: To describe epidemiological, anatomo-clinical and therapeutic aspects of peritoneo-vaginal canal pathologies (PVCP).Methods: We performed a retrospective and descriptive study on the files of PVCP cases operated in Lomé-Commune Regional Hospital (Togo). The study data concerned: the age, the occuring mode, anatomo-clinical classification, the side and treatment outcomes. Results: 107 files were collected from January 2011 to December 2015. The average age was 9.2 ± 8 years with a range from 16 months to 47 years. Twelve patients were less than 2 years and 14 patients were adults. The main consultation motive was an intermittent and painless inguinal or inguino-scrotal swelling in 89 cases (83.18%). The PVCP was in the right side in 66 patients (61.68%) and bilateral in 8 patients (7.47%). Concerning anatomo-clinical types, inguinal or inguino-scrotal hernia were more frequent (62.6%). The treatment was surgical in all cases and the average hospital stay was 2.1 days. The operative follow up was satisfactory in 94.3%. However, we noticed 4 cases of scrotal hematoma and 2 cases of parietal suppuration. The mortality rate after surgery was zero. One year back, we noticed two cases of testicular atrophy. Conclusions: Pathologies of the peritoneo-vaginal canal are frequent in our urological practice. Inguinal hernia and inguinoscrotal hernia are more represented. The surgical treatment results are successful.
