The feuilleton is one of the most specific and oldest genres in journalism, but also one of the least analyzed and defined. Often appropriated as a literary genre in journalism, it has changed its form, style and content throughout history in order to adapt to the current circumstances in the media world. In keeping with the contemporary development of digital platforms, online journalism and sensational, fast-paced reporting, its specifics and peculiarities bring new challenges. The aim of the paper is to note the use, specifics, topics and the position of this genre through the analysis of feuilletons in the serious, semitabloid and tabloid daily press in Serbia. Additionally, the goal is to observe potential differences in relation to the type of press, but also the ways in which this newspaper genre is implemented in online newspaper portals. In accordance with these goals, the method of descriptive and comparative content analysis as well as the statistical method were used in the paper. The research was conducted on four daily newspapers, Danas, Politika, Večernje novosti and Blic, in the period from January 24, 2020 to January 30,2020. Twenty seven issues of these newspapers were analyzed, including 2,230 media texts, 30 of which were feuilletons. Research has shown that this genre is more common in serious than in semi-tabloid and tabloid press, that the most common topic covered through this genre is politics and that there are significant differences between the same feuilletons in printed newspapers in comparison to online editions.

Daily newspapers are considered to have been the big losers in the media revolution. Their coverage has been declining for many years and their traditional revenue models no longer work. This study, which was carried out in cooperation with the publishing house and editorial staff of the ‘Pforzheimer Zeitung’, illustrates how this regional and local newspaper is positioning itself in the digital media age. This book provides unique insights into the results of reader surveys and the strategic considerations of publishers and editors. The first part analyses the status quo and perspectives of the daily press. It then discusses the performance of daily newspapers and their proximity to their readers as its two central concepts. The second part presents the results of surveys conducted among the readers and non-readers of the ‘Pforzheimer Zeitung’. The third part draws conclusions for regional newspapers to use as a guide, in which the managing publisher Thomas Satinsky and editor-in-chief Magnus Schlecht comment on the concept and strategy of the ‘Pforzheimer Zeitung’.

Analyzing this defense and repudiation mechanism used by the newspaper opens the discussion about the intentionality of fake news disseminated on the web. This analysis was made taking as theoretical basis the thought of Norbert Elias and John L. Scotson (2000) that deal with power relations and Pierry Lévy (2003; 2007) that points to the changes in the way of communicating and the relations caused by the cyberspace. The note of repudiation in the newspaper Roraima em Tempo made room for a latent discussion about the proliferation of fake news, forcing the media to use defense strategies to reaffirm that the content it conveys is true and deserves credibility.   KEYWORDS: Intentionality in the news; Fake news; Note of repudiation. Research into media representations of science is widespread and well-established in scientifically and technologically highly developed countries. However, very little is known about the characteristics of media reporting of science in transition countries, which are only just beginning to recognize the importance of research into the relationship between science, the media and the public. In this study, using content analysis of the daily newspapers with the largest circulations in Croatia (Jutarnji list and Večernji list) we researched the quantity and quality of media reporting of science. We link them to the characteristics of the Croatian media (tabloidization, the erosion of professional criteria) and the wider social context from which they stem. Our findings have shown poor representation of science news in the daily press as well as a low level of trustworthiness, especially in reporting biomedical news.

In a contemporary and digital society we have been witnessing frequent changes and everything has become a commodity, even a piece of information. Whether it is news in the media or an opinion written on social media, information is transformed into a product that has its own price, consumers and market. Since the occurrence of the mass media, numerous communication theories have been emerging which try to interpret how content affects the construction of behavior, what type of message produces certain effects and what are the long-term consequences for the society? Applying the quantitative and qualitative content analysis of the front pages of the six daily newspapers in Serbia (Informer, Večernje novosti, Blic, Kurir, Danas and Alo) between January 17 and February 1, 2021 we investigated the characteristics of the models and narratives used in presenting the case of the well-known Serbian director and acting teacher, Miroslav Mika Aleksić, who has been accused of sexually abusing female students. Using the theory of the agenda, the framework theory, as well as the hypodermic needle model, we will try to provide an answer to the question – whether and to what extent we can “defend” ourselves from media opinions which keep “bombing” us every day and can the media “reach a verdict” before legal institutions.

Let's face it: We're all Web journalists now. You might be working for a newspaper or magazine, a television or radio outlet, but your story is still likely to end up on the Web as well as in its original medium. You or your publication may even provide supplemental material that appears only on the Web—say, a behind-the-scenes notebook, an interactive graphic, or a blog. Or you might even be a journalist whose work appears almost exclusively on the Web—like me. I worked at daily newspapers for 19 years before joining MSNBC, a combined Web/television news organization. So I still tend to think of the Web as an online newspaper, with a lot of text, some pictures, and a few extra twists. But with the passage of time, online journalism is gradually coming into its own—just as TV started out as radio with pictures, but soon became a distinct news medium. To my mind, the principles of online journalism—having to do with fairness, accuracy, and completeness—are the same as the principles of off-line journalism. But the medium does shape the message, as well as the qualities that each medium considers most important. Wire-service reporters value getting the story out fast; newspapers value exclusive sources; magazines value in-depth coverage; radio and TV look for sounds and pictures that will help tell the story. All these factors are important for the Web as well, but one thing makes online journalism unique: Web writers are looking for ways to tell the story using software. Let's take a closer look at how one multimedia story unfolded, then get into how the tools and toys of the trade can be used in your own work. News coverage of space shuttle launches and landings usually follows a familiar routine: From MSNBC's West Coast newsroom in Redmond, Washington, I would update the landing-day story continuously, starting with the de-orbit burn, just as a wire service reporter might do. On February 1, 2003, however, the shuttle's landing was scheduled for a Saturday morning, one of the lightest times of the week for Web traffic.

Fanatik Newspaper has been chosen as a sample in explaining the evolution of communication from traditional media to new media tools during the Covid-19 pandemic period, as Fanatik uses both media platforms efficiently. During the pandemic period, in which people didn’t go out or even avoid meeting their relatives, it’s been harder to reach daily newspapers to be informed about developments. After the 1990s, humanity has already become acquainted with internet journalism, which led to a decrease in the purchase of newspapers, and people started following the developments mostly from other platforms such as computers and mobile phones. And the advent of Covid-19 increased people’s dependence to digital platforms as a result of the restrictions implemented by the states. This study includes a video interview with Ömer Necati Albayrak, who has been the editor of Fanatik since 2012, and the data collected about newspapers and online journalism during the pandemic. The meeting was originally planned to be held face-to-face, yet because of the pandemic, it had to be held over Zoom, one of the relatively new media applications. The questions asked in the interview were prepared in line with the location feature that’s in social networks (URL-1). Both qualitative and quantitative analysis methods were used in this study. With the content analysis performed with quantitative methods, information about the circulation and advertising revenues of the newspapers in Turkey in the last ten years were collected. As a result of both studies, it has been recorded that people mostly follow the news from the internet sites, however; the circulation of the newspapers, which declined at the beginning of the pandemic, increased again later. In consequence of the findings, although the evolution of communication from traditional media to new media seems to have been completed during the pandemic, it has been detected those newspapers are preferred more when it comes to advertising revenue.

Free daily newspapers such as Metro and 20 Minutes were published for the first time two decades ago. Today, they are part of the media market and they are read every day by hundreds of thousands of urbanites in metropolitan regions. These dailies are often presented as a symbol of the transformation of the press. But they attract a limited interest from communication scholars. Following the international conference named “The free daily press in Europe. 1995–2015” and organized by the CREM Research Unit and LISER in March 2016, we considered that a thematic section in SComS would be a good opportunity to present a series of double- blind peer reviewed articles dedicated to this media from three perspectives: Professional norms, business model, and geographical issues.

In order to determine the level of sexism in the Serbian daily press, a survey was conducted on a corpus of three editions of daily newspapers. Relevant national print media, which differ in their editorial policy, are included in the research: Politika as a serious daily informative-political newspaper, Večernje novosti as a semi-tabloid, and Kurir as a tabloid newspaper. These dailies were chosen because of the difference in the quality of the content they offer, the readability, and therefore the greatest impact on the readership. The research was done by the method of quantitative-qualitative content analysis. The research period was chosen at random, which includes editions published on January 28th 2020. The paper applies a methodology based on the numerical scale offered by Butler-Paisley in 1976, which indicates that representations of sexism are not black and white. This scale provides an explanation of the level of sexism in the media, dividing the media coverage of women into five categories, which can be categorized with each other. The woman in the first level is so limited and incompetent, that she is not a complete person; the woman in the second level is competent, but only within the defined sphere of activity; a third-level woman is allowed a wider sphere, but only if traditional activities remain primary. The fourth level allows more freedom, saying that a woman is and must be equal to a man, and level five confirms that each individual should be viewed non-stereotypically, and that women and men can sometimes surpass each other. Despite legal regulations and legal acts, which certainly represent a framework for the protection of women’s rights, the media still represent a woman under the burden of stereotypes, and do not give her enough space she deserves. The results of the research indicate certain shifts in the media representation of women, i.e. in most texts women are represented as equal to men, but there are still a large number of coded cases on the scale of “humiliate her” and “give her two places”, in which the media remind us of the two-dimensional portrayal of women and the primacy of private roles, a sphere that must not be jeopardized by a professional role

Abstract This article explores how hope and visions of the future have left their mark on media discourse in Turkey. Looking back at some of the events that took place in the 1980s, a decade that was shaped by the aftermath of the 1980 coup d’état, and considering them alongside what has happened since the ban of Istanbul’s Pride march in 2015, it examines traces of hope in two periods of recent Turkish history characterized by authoritarianism. Drawing on an array of visual and textual material drawn from the tabloid press, magazines, newspapers, and digital platforms, it inquires into how queer hope manages to infiltrate mediated publics even in times of pessimism and hopelessness. Based upon analysis of an archive of discourses on resistance, solidarity, and future, it argues that queer hope not only helps to map out possible future routes for queer lives in (and beyond) Turkey, but also operates as a driving political force that sustains queers’ determination to maintain their presence in the public sphere despite repressive nationalist, militarist, Islamist, and authoritarian regimes.
