The study and translation of the Epistle of the Patriarchate of Constantinople to the Czechs from 1451 aims to present the relations between the Hussites and the Orthodox Church, more precisely the Patriarchate of Constantinople in the middle of the 15th century. The translation of the Epistle provides answers to some questions that arose from the perception of historical events of the 15th century in the Church History in Western Church.

In the article through the prism of the fate of E.A. Karmanov, a church publisher, editor and bibliophile, shows the complex process of survival of Russian church history science in the Soviet period. Deprived of the possibility of development, it turned out to be focused on the task of preserving its pre-revolutionary heritage and new manuscript evidence, which was to become material for future research. Under these conditions, the role of collectors and keepers of the book culture of the church became very important, as was E.A. Karmanov (1927 1998).

History reconstruction: Third century parallels to 20th century South African Church History - Origen Adamantinus. In this paper a possible third century contribution to Church History reconstruction is considered. This is employed as an example for South African church historians who are dedicated to history interpretation, whether it be from the perspective of: acceptance on face value; justification; verification; criticism or renunciation of twentieth century historical events and the WG)'S in which they have influenced the prophetic task of the church in South Africa. To this end, a parallel is drawn between third century Origen and a few South African church figures from the twentieth century, which will highlight the church's continuing prophetic ministry.

AbstractHow can church history help students and teachers make sense of what happens when the church makes mistakes? The Jubilee Year of 2000 represented a moment to think about the far past, but after January 2002, the revelations about priest-pedophiles and institutional cover-ups placed the topic of the church's errors squarely in the current daily life of the church. This essay explores the historical hermeneutics in the International Theological Commission's document, Memory and Reconciliation: The Church and the Faults of the Past, issued a few months before Pope John Paul II's Jubilee apologies in Lent 2000. The essay strives to identify and critique historical and theological concerns in this document while applying them not only to historical events, but to the more recent sex abuse revelations. Two topics serve as entry points to this discussion: purification of memory and the historian's role in discerning personal and corporate responsibility.

The review examines the works of Polish researches in which the problems of the history of the Russian Orthodox Church are analyzed. The relationship along the lines of «church-state» and «church-intelligentsia» is presented. The conclusions of Polish historians boil down to the fact that the church and the state in Russia interacted in order to turn Orthodoxy into the state religion.

This paper examines the informative potential of miracles described in Nikon’s Chronicle. Miracles are understood as a symbolic genre of the Old Russian literature. They are stories about unexpected and miraculous events taking place through the will of God and solving some earthly problems. The miracles worked by the following Russian saints were analyzed: Saint Peter of Moscow, Sergius of Radonezh, Barlaam of Khutyn, etc. The texts of miracles from the saints’ lives, Russian chronicles dating from the 15th century to the early 16th century, and Nikon’s Chronicle were compared. It was concluded that the storylines had been considerably revised in the 1520s–1530s. A hypothesis was introduced that the texts were transformed as a result of the influence exercised by Maximus the Greek and the non-possessors, who expressed doubts that certain metropolitans and monastery rectors could have been recognized as miracle workers. This hypothesis was confirmed through the comparative analysis of Nikon’s Chronicle and the trial minutes of Maximus the Greek. The conclusion was made that the miracles described in the earlier sources were rewritten in the subsequent years to shift the emphasis on the important role played by certain church figures in the key historical events.


Purpose of the study. To analyze the works of modern historians, reflecting the intra-church vision of the situation of the Orthodox Church in the Russian Empire from the end of the nineteenth century to 1917. Attention is focused on assessments of the late synodal system, the need to Church renew, Church freedom in the state, the clergy perception of the February Revolution and the new government. The concept of «modern Church / Orthodox historiography» is used in a broad and conditional sense. Itʼs represented by authors of various ideological and canonical directions of the twentieth – early twenty-first century. The research methodology is based on a comparative study of the historiographic concepts mainly of the second half of the 20th century – the beginning of the 21st century. We study the most influential generalizing texts representing the position of various groups in the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as the works of Orthodox historians of emigration, the diaspora, Church dissidents. They have mostly liberal views and assessments of the Church process. The scientific novelty. The novelty of the study is determined by the weakness of the internal Church critical reflection, since the Church history functions within the framework of the apologetic and descriptive paradigm. Modern Church historiography is a specific phenomenon of historical science. Itʼs trying to combine two difficult tasks: religious apologetics and academic research. The article showed the negative aspects of this approach. Findings. The main lack of modern Church historiography is the indifference to non-political aspects of Church history. The potential of historical anthropology, intellectual history, the social history of ideas, and the history of mentality is ignored. As a result, many promising stories fall out of Сhurch historiography. These subjects are successfully investigated by secular historians. Common problem of the Orthodox historiography is thematic limitations, the tendency of the phenomenological «encapsulation» of the Church in the historical process, the conceptual dependence on Orthodox journalism at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. Also, the weak representativeness of the sources as a result of inattention to local documentary sources.

The interrelations of the Russian and Finnish Orthodox Churches in the 20th century are dramatic and poorly studied by Russian historians. This article, on the basis of materials from the State Archives of the Russian Federation and studies into church history translated from Finnish, attempts to evaluate the role of Dr. Paavo Kontkanen, an active member of the Finnish Archdiocese, in the relations between these two Churches. He exemplified a change in the attitude of the National Orthodox Church of Finland towards the Russian Church, historically kyriarchal, in the second half of the previous century. Dr. Paavo Kontkanen, being for a long time a member of the collegiate administrative body of the Finnish Archdiocese, the Church Administrative Council, with permission from Archbishop Herman (Aav) started negotiations with the leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church on a private level. Having archieved understanding with the chairman of the Department of External Church Relations, Metropolitan Nicholas (Yarushevich), Kontkanen considered the possibility of reunification of the Finnish Church and the Russian Church only for a short period, before receiving the status of Autocephalous Local Church from Moscow. Kontkanen’s actions enable to regard him as a conductor of Finland’s ecclesiastical interests aimed at rapprochement with the Soviet Union. It can be proved by Kontkanen’s close contacts with the President of Finland, Urho Kaleva Kekkonen, and his ability to defend interests of the “pro-Russian” part of the clergy and the Finnish Orthodox Church in the face of the state and the Church Council.

Первый и единственный в России музей Библии расположен в Иосифо-Волоцком ставропигиальном мужском монастыре. Он был создан по инициативе и при непосредственном участии митрополита Волоколамского и Юрьевского Питирима вскоре после возвращения Иосифо-Волоцкого монастыря Русской Православной церкви. Экспозиция размещена в трёх музейных залах и содержит более пятисот экспонатов. Научный фонд вместе с экспозиционным составляет более тысячи экземпляров. Музейная коллекция содержит книги Священного Писания, богослужебные книги, святоотеческую литературу, книги по истории церкви, альбомы по иконописи и другие издания. В экспозиции музея представлены книги Священного Писания на 40 языках (европейских, азиатских, народов России). В числе редких экспонатов музея - Острожская Библия (1581), Московская Библия (1663), несколько изданий Елизаветинской Библии (XVIII в.), венецианское издание Вульгаты (1609) и прочее. Также в коллекции музея размещены издания Священных текстов с редкими иллюстрациями: копия знаменитой рисованной Велиславовой Библии (чешской рукописи середины XIV в.), двухтомное издание Библии на французском языке с 228 гравюрами Гюстава Доре (1866); издания, содержащие произведения Лукаса Кранаха, Рембрандта, Альбрехта Дюрера; немецкое издание Библии, иллюстрированное Сальвадором Дали (1990), четырёхтомная Библия на французском языке с иллюстрациями Эди Леграна (1949) и другие издания. Возникший на основе библиотеки владыки Питирима музей в настоящее время прирастает экспонатами, приобретёнными наместником Иосифо-Волоцкого монастыря архимандритом Сергием, а также благодаря вкладам Института перевода Библии и других жертвователей и меценатов. The first and only Russia Bible museum is situated in the St. Joseph-of-Volotsk stauropegial monastery. It was founded on the initiative and with the direct participation of the Metropolitan of Volokolamsk and Yurievsky Pitirim soon after the return of the St. Joseph-of-Volotsk monastery to the Russian Orthodox Church. The exhibition is located in three museum halls and contains more than five hundred items. It makes more than thousand copies counting museum funds. There are books of the Holy Scriptures, liturgical books, patristic literature, books on the church history, some albums with icon painting and other publications. The museum exhibits books of the Holy Scripture in 40 languages - European, Asian and indigenous languages of the peoples of Russia. Among rare museum exhibits there is the Ostrog Bible (1581), the Moscow Bible (1663), several editions of the Elizabethan Bible (XVIII century), the Venetian Vulgate edition (1609) etc. One of the pearls of the collection is a Czech manuscript of the mid XIV century as well as a two-volumed Bible edition in French with 228 engravings by Gustave Dore (1866) and editions containing works of Lucas Cranach, Rembrandt, Albrecht Durer; German Bible edition illustrated by Salvador Dali (1990), a four-volumed Bible in French with Edie Legrand’si llustrations (1949) etc. The museum, which has emerged from the Bishop Pitirim’s library, is currently growing with exhibits purchased by Archimandrite Sergiy, Abbot of the St. Joseph-of-Volotsk monastery, and generous gifts of the Institute of the Bible Translation as well as other donators and patrons.

Introduction: Research on Russian Orthodox Church history of the period of the Great Patriotic War has ample complex of sources come into scientific operation fully enough. However, it should be noted that researches chiefly focus their attention on documentary sources whereas it must be admitted that memory-based oral literature, such as orally transmitted pieces of evidence devoted to the history of Russian Orthodox Church parishes in the rear, for example, is somewhat lacking. The purpose of our research is caused by the necessity to fill the lacunas in the field of the church history in Mordovian study of local lore during the period of 1941–1945 as well as to enrich information which is presented rather sparingly. Materials and Methods. The materials of the article are orally transmitted sources collected and processed by the students and teachers of Saransk theological seminary. Interdisciplinary nature of the problem of our research determined the coherence of methodological aims of social knowledge such as hermeneutics, historical anthropology, sociology, etc. Results. The article describes the results of the work connected with collecting and analyzing several narrative complexes of memory-based and orally transmitted pieces of evidence linked by the period of the Great Patriotic War and the theme of life in the rear parishes of Mordovian region. Collecting information was carried out by means of free interviewing methods, frequently used in cultural and anthropological researches. Discussion and Conclusions. The significance and value of orally transmitted historical sources concerning the church history of the Great Patriotic War period are hard to overestimate. Interviewees reconstruct not only the events of the past but also transmit, along with the whole complex of their emotional experiences, linked with these events, their mental references. All this is essential for better understanding social history, the history of family on the one hand, and the history of culture, on the other, inasmuch as oral pieces of evidence supplement documentary information with anthropological constituent. This is the most valuable thing while studying themes, closed for the public before, such as Russian Orthodox Church history of the first half of the XX century, for example.
