In modern conditions, the methods of classical economic analysis are not enough to solve the problem of bank stability. This requires the development of methods and tools to analyze the current situation in the bank and to develop sound management decisions aimed at ensuring the stability of the bank. The article notes that the analysis of the influence of the structure and quality of assets on the profitability of commercial banks is an important step for assessing the financial position and reliability of a bank, and a method is proposed for constructing a model of the dependence of bank’s profitability on the factors that determine it. The scientific sources were the works of Russian and foreign researchers in the field of modeling and characteristics of the banking system, financial stability of credit institutions, assessment of the creditworthiness of potential borrowers, system organization and information technology. The article uses the methods of economic analysis, differential calculus and mathematical statistics, as well as the achievements of the main scientific schools dealing with the problems of economic and mathematical modeling and economic analysis of banking. In order to determine the most significant economic factors affecting the profitability of commercial banks, generalization of the theoretical, methodological and applied aspects of studies devoted to the study of the influence of the structure and quality of assets on the profitability of commercial banks was carried out, and a correlation and regression analysis was made. The model presented in the article can be used to predict changes in the profitability of Russian commercial banks and to predict promising directions for growth in profit and profitability of the bank.

The main approaches to understanding the essence of “stability of banking system” are conducted in the article. The basic principles are also given, inherent in a stable banking system. Further, the main factors affecting the stability of the banking system are considered. The article determined the components of ensuring the assessment of the bank’s financial stability. The basic principles of effective banking supervision are the actual minimum standard for prudent regulation and supervision of banks and banking systems. Initially issued by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision in 1997, they are used by countries as a guide to assess the quality of their surveillance systems and to determine future work towards achieving a basic level of rational oversight practices. The core principles are also used by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in the context of the Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP) to assess the effectiveness of banking supervisory systems and country practices.

The banking sector in Kosovo continues to have a high level of sustainability and financial stability. Two substantial components for the stability of the banking system appear to be liquidity and liquidity risk. The purpose of this paper is to analyze liquidity management in Kosovo's commercial banks through liquidity risk indicators from 2008 to 2017. By comparing the methodology of the data presented, the study will assess the state of management of the liquidity risk of commercial banks. From 2008 until now, commercial banks in Kosovo have had liquidity reserves at a level higher than the level required by CBK, which means that exposure to liquidity risk was minimal.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the relative efficiency of commercial banks in three developing countries in Europe (North Macedonia, Serbia, and Croatia) in the period from 2015 to 2019, and to provide targets for improvement for the inefficient banks by using DEA. The variables are selected under the income-based approach. Based on the output-oriented BCC model, unusual results are obtained for a few commercial banks in each country, that is, they are BCC relative efficient, which is contrary to the real situation. In order to identify outliers that can affect the efficiency results, a super-efficiency procedure is applied so that banks with a super-efficiency score higher than 1.2 (outliers) or for which a feasible solution was not found are considered in detail and removed, and then the output-oriented BCC model is rerun. Based on the obtained results, the Macedonian commercial banking system shows the highest efficiency (91.1%), followed by the Croatian (90.9%) and the Serbian (81.9%) banking system. The estimated targets for improvement of the inefficient commercial banks could help their top bank management in better resource allocation and making fact-based and faster decisions by which they can improve the operation of the banks they lead and contribute to the stability of the financial system.

A significant role of the banking system in ensuring the functioning of the entire economy, by means of organizing the movement of borrowed capital between individual industries and the implementation of financial needs is achieved only if this system, and therefore its constituent elements, are stable. In this regard, the stability of the banking system should be considered as a fundamental internal characteristic, which ensures the existence and stable development of the Bank in a market economy under the influence of external and internal factors. In 2020, commercial banks were faced with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the Russian economy and the banking system in particular. At the same time, the current situation of banks ' functioning is characterized not only by the presence of a corona crisis, but also by the internal development of the system itself, which, following the uberization of the world economy, dictates to commercial banks the need to develop and implement financial technologies and form ecosystems. In these conditions, the need for commercial banks in financial resources increases, which is reflected in the increasing role of profit in the Bank's activities and development. This article focuses on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the banking system of the Russian Federation and the economy as a whole, and also identifies the features of profit formation and the specifics of the functioning of commercial banks in the coronavirus crisis period.

The article explores the problems of ensuring the financial sustainability of the banking sector, which plays a very important role in the functioning of the financial system of the state. The role of the stability of the banking system in ensuring conditions of economic growth is justified. It is noted that it is the financial stability of each banking institution that is a prerequisite for the stable functioning of the entire banking system. It is emphasized that since the financial stability of the banking system is influenced by a large number of internal and external factors, for the effective functioning of the banking system of the country must be ready for any challenges to the macro and microenvironment. The main problems of the banking system in modern conditions should be considered the reduction of deposits of the population, deterioration of the quality of the loan portfolio, significant devaluation of the hryvnia, high inflation rates, loss-making of a significant number of banking institutions. It was concluded that the banking system of Ukraine feels a significant dependence on the funds of depositors - individuals, and therefore on factors that affect their behavior in the financial market. Trends of formation of deposit base of commercial banks of Ukraine and imbalances in the sphere of attraction of banking resources were analyzed. The growth of bank deposits of the population is slow, negative changes in their structure are observed. The share of deposits of individuals after the 2014 crisis has become significantly more volatile and risky in terms of financial stability. The increase in lending is complicated by the presence of large portfolios of problem loans, as a result of which there are a number of tasks to increase the efficiency of the loan portfolio, which should ensure a compromise of profitability, liquidity and credit risk acceptable to the bank. The priorities of monetary policy and the main tasks are formulated, the solution of which will allow to intensify lending to the real sector of the economy. Theoretical and practical recommendations have been developed to improve bank lending, increase the profitability of the banking system and capitalize Ukrainian banks.

Ensuring and strengthening the financial sustainability of banks is a difficult and not completely resolved task. It is inherent not only to developed countries, it has also be¬come nationally important in Ukraine, which was largely predetermined by the specifics of the domestic banks development. This is explained, in particular, by the banking insti¬tutions’ focus mainly on the relatively short-term activity, the need to work under high risk, resulting from economic and political instability in the country. Therefore, nowa¬days, it is urgent for each Ukrainian bank to focus on the main strategic objective – effec¬tive management and ensuring financial sustainability. The purpose of this study is to assess the current state and identify the features of ensuring financial sustainability of the banking system of Ukraine. It was pointed out in the study that the negative tendency to increase the number of in¬solvent commercial banks during 2012–2017 indicates problems with providing finan¬cial sustainability to commercial banks. The tendencies have been revealed that testify to the problems of the banking system capitalization in Ukraine, which greatly affects its financial stability. Given the analysis of indicators of banks financial sustainability that characterize the bank capital adequacy, the conclusion is made on ambiguous as¬sessment of sufficient level of capitalization, since despite the correspondence of most values of coefficients to the indicators, there is a lack of capitalization of the domestic banking system and equity capital concentration. In general, the results made it pos¬sible to identify trends in the development of capital ratios and financial sustainability indicators and to shape appropriate measures to increase the level of capitalization in order to ensure the financial sustainability of the banking system.
