El objetivo de este estudio es describir los niveles de práctica de actividad física, habilidades motrices básicas y la composición corporal en niños y jovenes con Trastornos de Espectro Autista que se encuentran escolarizados en centros de educación especial en la Comunidad de Madrid y analizar diferencias entre sexos, por ser una población de la que existe una carencia de información sobre estos parámetros. Participaron 53 niños y jóvenes (11.9 + 3.4 años) y sus familias. Se empleó un diseño descriptivo y comparativo entre sexos donde se utilizó acelerometría para medir su actividad física, test motores para las habilidades motrices y bioimpedancia para la composición corporal. Los niños presentan mayores tasas de actividad moderada frente a las niñas, tanto en los días laborables (62.8±33.5 vs 36.1±34.1 minutos respectivamente; p=.02) como en los días festivos, donde estas diferencias se incrementan (75.4±56.0 vs 31.5±36.7; p=.02). Los festivos incrementan el tiempo que dedican a la televisión (40.9±45.0 vs 87.7±102.8 min. en las niñas; 59.7±80.2 vs 88.8±144.0 en los niños; p=.01), sin diferencias entre sexos (p>.05). En el total de la muestra, se ha encontrado un 27.3% de incidencia de sobrepeso siendo más elevada en las niñas (55.6% niñas vs 20.0% niños; p=.03). Igualmente, las niñas han mostrado menores niveles de habilidad motriz. Se hace necesario implementar programas de actividad física para este colectivo, prestando especial atención a las niñas.Abstract. The purpose of this study was to describe the physical activity levels, motor skills and body composition in children and young with Autistic Spectrum Disorders and analyze gender differences. Fifty-three students from special education schools and their families from Madrid (11.9 + 3.4 years) took part in this descriptive study. Triaxial accelerometers were used to assess their physical activity (PA) levels, motor tests were used to measure their motor skills and bioimpedance was used to calculate body composition. Boys have higher rates of moderate PA than girls, both on weekdays (62.8±33.5 vs. 36.1±34.1 min, respectively; p=.02) and on weekends, when these differences are increased (75.4±56.0 vs 31.5±36.7; p=.02). On weekends, time they spend watching television are increased (40.9±45.0 vs. 87.7±102.8 min for girls; 59.7±80.2 vs. 88.8±144.0 for boys; p=.01), without gender differences (p>.05). For the total sample, has been identified 27.3% the overweight’s incidence, that is higher in girls (55.6% girls vs. 20.0% boys; p=.03). Likewise, girls had lower motor skills levels. It is necessary to introduce PA programs to this group, with special focus on girls.

The purpose of this study was to compare fatigue, strength, body composition, muscle thickness, and muscle quality between Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivors (HLS) and apparently healthy subjects matched by age, gender, and physical activity levels (CON). Twelve HLS (32.16 ± 8.06) and 36 CON (32.42 ± 7.64) were enrolled in the study. Fatigue was assessed using the 20-item Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory, muscle strength using an isokinetic dynamometer, body composition using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and thickness and muscle quality using B-mode ultrasound. Differences between HLS and CON were analyzed using independent samples t tests. No significant differences were observed between groups for any demographic characteristics: age ( P = .922), weight ( P = .943), height ( P = .511), body mass index ( P = .796), fat mass ( P = .688), fat-free mass ( P = .520), and percent body fat ( P = .446). No significant differences were observed for strength (peak torque; P = .552), relative peak torque ( P = .200), muscle thickness ( P > .05) and muscle quality ( P > .05). However, self-perceived fatigue was significantly higher in HLS than in CON ( P = .009). It appears that when HLS are matched by age and physical activity levels to CON, no significant difference in body composition, muscle thickness, muscle quality, or strength is observed. Self-perceived fatigue, as predicted, is higher in HLS, which may have implications and should be considered when prescribing exercise training to this cancer population.

BACKGROUND It has been proven that males engage in physical activity more than females starting at a young age. The goal of this study was to investigate gender differences based on parenting behaviors such as the frequency with which parents send their children out to play. METHODS Parents of children participating in a free cardiovascular risk-screening program (CARDIAC Project) completed a behavioral survey. Children (n =472; 43.3% female) who were enrolled in elementary school participated in the study. Parents provided information about children’s physical activity and their own ways in which they provided support of activity at home. Children’s participation in 12 activities was captured by total number of minutes per week. A combined mean activity score was calculated by summing the children’s total time across all of the activities. Parent behavior , specifically the frequency at which parents send their children outside to play was captured using a Likert scale where “1” represented never and “5” represented daily. Child gender and the amount of time allowed outside for play were then entered into a linear regression model to examine their role as potential predictors of child activity. RESULTS A significant gender difference (p<.001) was noted in children’s total activity time with boys (n = 237; 751 minutes/week) exhibiting higher mean activity each week than girls (n = 229; 521 minutes/week). Child gender and the amount of time allowed outside to play significantly predicted children’s activity levels overall. This model explained 28.9% of the variance in children’s activity levels (F = 20.25 (2); p<.001). Specifically, girls had less opportunity (3.75) than boys (4.05) to play outside. CONCLUSION A factor behind the lesser physical activity in female adolescents is significantly related to the decreased opportunity to play outside. Additional parenting practices will be shared if presented. In conclusion, parent behavior plays a significant role in the proven gender differences with childhood physical activity.

Abstract Summary The aim of the study was to assess the associations of bone mineral density and bone mass with physical activity levels, vitamin D, phosphorus, magnesium, total cholesterol and triglyceride concentration and body composition in young women and men. Physical activity has the most significant effect on bone status especially in men. Purpose The aim of the study was to assess the associations of bone mineral density and bone mass with physical activity levels, vitamin D, phosphorus, magnesium, total cholesterol and triglyceride concentration and body composition in young women and men. Methods One hundred subjects aged 19–24 years were included. Bone mineral density (BMD) in distal and proximal parts was evaluated by forearm densitometry. Body composition was analysed with the use of JAWON-Medical-x-scan. The following biochemical indicators were analysed: 25(OH) D and 1,25(OH)2D, magnesium, phosphorus, total cholesterol and triglycerides. Physical activity levels were assessed by interview. Results Significant correlations between BMD and physical activity, skeletal muscle mass and body fat percentage were revealed in men. Among women, considerably weaker correlations of BMD with body composition and physical activity were noted than in men. BMD in the distal part correlated only with lean body mass, soft lean mass and body fat percentage. The strongest relationship between physical activity and bone mineral status parameters was noted for BMD in men. In women, physical activity did not affect BMD. Conclusions Physical activity has the most significant effect on bone status especially in men.

SummaryStudy aim: The aim of the study was to determine the weekly energy expenditure measuring MET/min/week based on data collected through the Canada Fitness Survey (CFS), according to the classification used in the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and to verify the adopted method to assess the level of physical activity in students of physical education. Material and methods: The study involved 116 female students (21.1 ± 1.6) and 276 male students (21.2 ± 1.7), studying Physical Education at Kazimierz Wielki University. Physical activity (PA) of respondents assessed using the Canada Fitness Survey was converted to energy expenditure in MET/min/week using the criteria established in the IPAQ. Body composition was assessed according to bioelectrical impedance. Results: A significantly smaller fat fraction was observed in the group of students with high physical activity (PA) (p < 0.01). In women, there was a significant relation between FAT% and all analysed characteristics of physical activity: total physical activity (TPA) – 0.274, vigorous intensity (VI) – 0.216, number of days spent on physical activity (DTPA) – 0.199 and number of days spent on vigorous intensity (DVI) – 0.202 (p < 0.05). In men, a significant relation was found between all the analysed tissue components and the adopted variables of PA (FAT% vs. TPA – 0.145, VI – 0.203, DTPA – 0.187; FATkg vs. TPA – 0.123, VI – 0.186, DTPA – 0.178; FATkg vs. DVI – 0.131). BMI significantly correlated with VI (–0.162) and DVI (–0.140), p < 0.05. Conclusions: Based on data collected using the CFS on the type and frequency of PA during a week, we can determine the level of activity in a measurable way, using the IPAQ classification. There is a significant relationship between thus determined physical activity levels and body composition in both women and men, which proves the accuracy of the adopted method of converting weekly energy expenditure to MET/min/week.
