This article is an attempt to investigate the recontextualisation and transformation process involved in the pedagogic discourse of Islamic State classroom textbooks during its takeover of some parts of Iraq. The article uses an eclectic analytical framework comprising Bernstein's pedagogical model of recontextualization, Linell's levels of recontextualization, Fairclough's concept of genre mixing, Wodak's discourse-historical approach (DHA), and Barthes' model of visual semiotics. These mixed approaches are applied to the analysis of a variety of visual images of Islamic State published textbooks and classroom pedagogic visual aids downloaded from different websites. It is found that the meaning of the pedagogic discourse is transformed via interdiscursive recontextualisation processed in two reversal directions: a militarization of pedagogic discourse and a pedagogization of decapitation practice. Recontextualisation is exceptionally significant with regard to Islamic State jihadist pedagogic discourse that is reframed historically and ideologically to suit an extreme sense of religious intolerance which Islamic State prioritizes as a foundation of regaining and refreshing their lost Islamic caliphate.

This article focuses on the discourses of the main centre-right political party group (EPP-ED, EPP) in the European Parliament on Turkey’s accession to the European Union. It utilises the analytical framework of the Discourse-Historical Approach in Critical Discourse Analysis to mainly concentrate on the articulations of ‘culture’ and ‘cultural identity’ in the discussions over Turkish accession in official parliamentary debates and in-depth personal interviews with the members of this group. It is argued that a relational theorising of identity allows for analysis of the ways in which a cultural ‘Europe’ is articulated through current discussions on Turkey in the mainstream right-wing European Parliament discourse and thus reveals the cultural borders that are enacted with reference to Turkish membership within this group.

AbstractThis article examines the perspectives of Puerto Ricans living in the United States in response to a publicity campaign that focuses on the correction of linguistic features that appear in some Puerto Ricans’ spoken Spanish. The campaign addresses phonetic, morphological, lexical, and syntactic features, including a specific set of words or phrases that are named as lexical and semantic borrowings from English. Participants were invited to respond to the content and ideologies present in the campaign by means of semi-structured interviews. Through a framework of Critical Discourse Analysis and language (de)legitimation, the article analyzes the ways in which interviewees (de)legitimize loanwords in Puerto Rican Spanish. A Critical Discourse Analytical framework allows for the mapping of spoken and written texts (e. g. the campaign texts) onto discourses

At the core of critical discourse analysis lies its emancipatory agenda: arguing for social equality and against discrimination. In the case of the discourse-historical approach (DHA), this stance has been theoretically justified mainly through references to Habermas’ language-philosophy. At the same time, the analysis of actually occurring argumentative speech requires more than a theoretical underpinning of one’s critique and, here, DHA has benefitted from drawing on van Eemeren and Grootendorst’s Pragma-Dialectical argumentation theory. However, Pragma-Dialectics is not just a tool kit but rests on Popper and Albert’s critical rationalism. This results in both epistemological as well as normative conflicts at the paradigm-core of DHA between critical rationalism and Habermas’ critical theory regarding the concept of critique. In this article, we review the different epistemological and normative underpinnings of DHA and Pragma-Dialectics and discuss the consequences of implementing the latter in the former. We conclude by arguing for a coherent orientation towards Habermas’ language-philosophy in order to maintain a high degree of consistency in DHA.

This article analyses the discursive construction of collective memories and the function of commemorative events for national identity. It focuses on how the 30th anniversary of the Portuguese 1974 revolution was portrayed in the government’s Programme of Action issued for the 2004 commemorations and in forty-three newspaper opinion articles also published in 2004. The 1974 revolution ended a 48-year right-wing dictatorship and has shaped subsequent historical events since the 1970s. When the Programme of Action changed the 1974 slogan ‘April is revolution’ into ‘April is evolution’, the written press responded by conducting a debate on this reframing. Using the Discourse-Historical Approach in CDA as the analytical framework, this paper highlights the discursive strategies on which the government’s manifesto was built and explores the opinion articles’ ongoing political and ideological tensions over the revolution, its commemorations, and how it paved the way into Europe, by describing the main macro-discursive strategies and raising issues regarding the (mis)representation of social actors and social action.

New research is drawing attention to the potential for climate change to generate cascading impacts and implications across linked human-environment systems, requiring closer accounting of these interactions to anticipate the emergence of surprises and feedbacks. However, there is little practical guidance for those interested in characterising, identifying or assessing cascades, and few empirical examples. In this paper, we elaborate a systems-based methodology to identify and evaluate cascading climate change impacts and implications. We illustrate its application using the case of a participatory process with urban infrastructure managers, facing the legacy effects of damaging earthquakes and the prospect of future climate change. The results show the proposed approach and visualisation of cascades as causal diagrams provides a robust and flexible analytical framework. The use of systems thinking, visual aids, interactive discussion and expert elicitation generated valuable information about potential cascades, their interactions across domains of interest, and the implications for management. The process can provide a basis for further empirical application and advance methodological and conceptual development. Specifically, the systems methodology: • Identifies interdependencies and interconnections which may serve as transmission pathways for climate-related impacts; • Enhanced stakeholders’ understanding of multiple causes and effects of climate change; and • Produced a useful visual aid for stakeholders to explore cascading impacts and implications, and opportunities for intervention.

El objetivo de este trabajo es proponer un Modelo holístico multimodal para una lectura crítica del racismo en la prensa escrita. Para ello, desde el Análisis Crítico del Discurso Multimodal (ACDM), usaremos como estrategia teórico-metodológica integradora las aportaciones de Teresa Velázquez (2011) y su modelo semiótico-discursivo; el modelo sociocognitivo de van Dijk (1990, 1997, 2003a, 2003b); el modelo de la semiótica visual de Kress y van Leeuwen (1996) y el modelo intersemiótico de Nikolajeva y Scott (2001). Se validarán las matrices de análisis aplicándolas al llamado conflicto mapuche en Chile para extraer resultados y conclusiones valederas en torno a la representación periodística de las minorías étnicas. Abstract: This work aims to propose a holistic multimodal approach for making critical reading about racism in the written press. In order to achieve this, and taking account the Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis, we use as theoretical and methodological integrative strategies the contributions of Teresa Velázquez and her discursive-semiotic approach (2011), van Dijk’s sociocognitive approach (1990, 1997a, 2003a, 2003b), Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual semiotics approach (1996), and Nikolakeva and Scott’s intersemiotic approach (2001). The analysis matrices are validated using the so-called mapuche conflict in Chile in order to be able to draw conclusive results and conclusions about media representations of ethnic minorities.

The purpose of this research is to obtain information about the topics control system as part of textual characteristics in pedagogic discourse in elementary school in Bogor. This research uses qualitative descriptive method with content analysis technique. Data were obtained through recording technique of learning process in three schools in Bogor. The focus of this research is on the control system of teacher topics through teacher inquiries, use of greetings, use of word markers, ignoring student responses, and strengthening student responses. The structure of pedagogical discourse in the classroom consists of new lessons, transactions, exchanges, movements, and new movements. The lesson consists of transactions that are composed again on several exchanges. The movement is composed of several exchanges. Movement consists of several types of behavior: starters, responses, questions, and answers/follow-up. This research has resulted that teachers are always in control of the topic of conversation. This can be seen from the topics raised in the form of questions or statements of teachers and neglect student responses or answers by teachers. Thus, it can be concluded that students seem to obey the teacher-student discourse structure in the classroom. Whereas what happens is the dominance of teachers to students in the classroom. Research on the text dimension of pedagogical discourse is useful for teachers to improve teaching methods that are still centered on teachers and use alternative learning strategies that enable students in the classroom. Keywords: pedagogic discourse structure, topics control system, elementary school   Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini untuk memperoleh informasi mengenai sistem pengendalian topik sebagai ciri tekstual dalam wacana pedagogi di sekolah dasar di Bogor. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik analisis isi. Data diperoleh melalui teknik rekam catat proses pembelajaran di tiga sekolah di Bogor. Fokus penelitian ini ialah pada sistem pengendalian topik guru melalui pertanyaan guru, penggunaan kata sapaan, penggunaan kata penanda/pemarkah, pengabaian respons siswa, dan penguatan respons siswa. Struktur wacana pedagogi di dalam kelas terdiri atas pelajaran, transaksi, pertukaran, gerakan, dan gerakan baru. Pelajaran terdiri atas transaksi yang tersusun lagi atas beberapa pertukaran. Gerakan tersusun dari beberapa pertukaran. Gerakan terdiri atas beberapa jenis tingkah laku, yaitu pemulai, respons, pertanyaan, dan jawaban/tindak lanjut. Penelitian ini menghasilkan bahwa guru selalu mengendalikan topik pembicaraan. Hal ini terlihat dari topik yang dikemukakan berupa pertanyaan atau pernyataan guru dan pengabaian respons siswa atau jawaban siswa oleh guru. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa siswa seolah-olah mematuhi struktur wacana guru-siswa di dalam kelas. Padahal yang terjadi ialah adanya dominasi guru terhadap siswa di dalam kelas. Penelitian mengenai dimensi teks wacana pedagogi ini bermanfaat bagi guru agar dapat memperbaiki metode pembelajaran yang masih berpusat pada guru dan menggunakan alternatif strategi pembelajaran yang mengaktifkan siswa di kelas. Following the discourse-historical approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (Wodak, de Cilia, Reisigl and Liebhart 1999; Wodak 2001), we analyze the inaugural speech of the actual president of Colombia, Álvaro Uribe Vélez, which he delivered on August 7th, 2002 in Bogotá. We take this speech as an illustration for the construction of national identity by the Colombian elites. In our analysis, we are particularly interested in Uribe’s strategy of referring to the European heritage and in his ways of appeasing the cultural and ethnic differences of the population.

The study represents an attempt of converging the elements of critical media literacy with the Habermasian theory of communicative competence. Universal pragmatics (validity claims) is being used as a theoretical base for the development of an analytical framework of critical media literacy, and the method is being empirically and experimentally tested through critical discourse analysis of the theme of the new Labour Law adoption in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Srpska. The analysis includes 32 media texts on the Klix, Buka and N1 news portals. Positive and negative claims about the adoption of the new Labour Law are being tested for comprehensibility, truth, sincerity and legitimacy.

Today's corporate landscape is undergoing a transformation process, and India is not untouched by these phases of transition as humans are replaced by computers and brick-and-mortar firms are substituted by e-commerce companies. In the midst of these shifts, issues such as labour dynamics have changed dramatically. One such consequence is the Gig Economy. With the gradual improvement in the labour market and the focus of government on localisation, it remains important to analyse the widespread influence of growing gig culture in making India a self-reliant economy. This chapter of the book therefore seeks to review the different components of the gig economy along with the advantages and disadvantages and how gig can contribute towards a localised and self-reliant Indian economy. The chapter also evaluates the regulatory framework of the gig economy in India. The chapter also proposes a conceptual model incorporating various pillars that could serve as an analytical framework for the rapidly increasing number of concepts and policy proposals.
