This paper analyzes the translation of wordplay from a literary corpus, the novel “O Xangô de Baker Street” (SOARES, 1995), translated into English by Clifford Landers in 1997, and does so based on the framework of Delabastita (1996) for wordplay’s translation. The study uses the theoretical-methodological approach of Corpus Linguistics and is characterized as “corpus driven” (TOGNINI-BONELLI, 2001). The analysis of the translations showed that Delabastita's framework can cope with only part of the procedures observed in the translation of the wordplay investigated, and as a result, the study proposes to expand the mentioned framework, by means of the addition of four new strategies for wordplays' translation.

ABSTRACT: This study discusses the translation of puns in the Portuguese-English direction, more specifically the pun 'Beer hall of the dead', which is part of the novel O xangô de Baker Street (SOARES, 1995), translated into English as 'A samba for Sherlock'. The article derives from our doctoral thesis, and aims to analyze the translation of the pun into the English language. It uses the theoretical-methodological approach of Corpus Linguistics to select puns as data to be analyzed and is characterized as a 'corpus-driven approach' as discussed by Tognini-Bonelli (2001). The analysis is based mainly on the strategies of pun translation presented by Delabastita (1996) and takes into account theoretical conceptions of Raskin (1985) and Attardo (1994). As a result, it verifies that the translation strategies used to recreate the pun in English are compatible with the PUN → PUN strategy, in which a pun is translated by another one in the target language, being allowed differences in terms of formal structure, semantic structure, or textual function.KEYWORDS: translation; puns; Corpus Linguistics.

Corpus linguistics is one of the fastest-growing methodologies in contemporary linguistics. It utilizes a large and principled collection of natural texts, known as a corpus, as the basis for analysis. At the same time, corpus linguistics is more than a methodological approach, because it has enabled researchers to ask fundamentally different kinds of research questions, sometimes resulting in radically different perspectives on language variation and use from those taken in previous research. And to make good use of corpus resources one needs a modest orientation to the routines involved in retrieving information from the corpus, and most importantly training and experience in how to evaluate that information. Hence, this paper presents corpus techniques in the field of teaching addressing the possible areas of its usage in vocabulary development through some activities requiring quantitative and qualitative analyses.

Marked discrepancies exist between levels of face recognition and accuracy of face recall registered by Photofit. One of the reasons for this may be that Photofit demands that subjects initially identify features in isolation and such a strategy is incompatible with normal coding processes. Experiment 1 compared the normal feature-based approach to face building with a condition which permitted subjects to work from an established face (‘Mr Average’). No superiority for the latter condition could be established. Experiment 2 contrasted the standard building method with one in which subjects were offered a variety of facial types as potential starting points. Again, accuracy was no higher under the novel procedure. It was concluded that there were no grounds advocating for a wholesale change in current tactics of Photofit building which emphasize feature-selection prior to amending a total facial composite.

This conceptual paper argues that enterprise architecture (EA) should move towards a conscious human-centered conception of the enterprise. Employing the conceptual methodological approach of theory synthesis and drawing on the extant literature in enterprise architecture as well as pertinent social and organizational theories, we suggested foundational propositions that could holistically serve as a theoretical lens for (re)viewing the foundations of EA within a progressive conscious enterprise agenda. The novel contribution of the paper is the introduction of human capabilities approach (HCA) as a method theory, to supplement systems and stakeholder theories, for design and evaluation of enterprise architecture in the modern enterprise. The paper concludes by showing the implications of the propositions for practitioners and researchers.

The article analyzes the mythologization of Kaunas, the temporary capital of Lithuania, in the Lithuanian literature of the interwar period. The methodological approach of the research is based on the research methods of urban mythopoetics by Vladimir Toporov and that of topological semiotics by Algirdas Julien Greimas. Due to objective historical and social circumstances, the formation of the Lithuanian urban literature started only at the beginning of the 20th century. The intensive period in the urbanization of the Lithuanian literature was that of the interwar period when literary reflections on Kaunas started gaining certain dominant symbolic images of the city, repeating plots and characters typical of Kaunas. The literary myth of the temporary capital as a pernicious city which becomes a moral trial for an individual is revealed in the article through the analysis of Part III of the novel Altorių šešėly [In the shadows of altars] by Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas, the most prominent Lithuanian novelist of the interwar period.

In this article, the author attempts to identify the specifics of the religious implication of Turgenevʼs novel «The Song of Triumphant Love» by addressing the area of its emotional and value orientation. The author proceeds from the methodological approach according to which the emotional-value orientation of I. S. Turgenev's thought and work is the interaction of two axiological hierarchies. Their basic values are, on the one hand, universal and, on the other, individual. In the context of Turgenevʼs thought and creativity, these beginnings are embodied in the image of nature and human personality, which are in irreconcilable conflict with each other. Typologically and genetically, these axiological dominants date back to two religious paradigms - pantheistic and theistic. The mood of longing, which is a characteristic emotional tone for Turgenevʼs work and is objectified in one of the leading motifs in the cycle of «mysterious novels», is seen as the focus of the narrativeʼs relationship to the abovementioned religious paradigms. The analysis of the structure, formation and functioning of the longing motif in the novel «The Song of Triumphant Love» makes it possible to identify the peculiarities of their interaction and thus determine the specifics of the religious implication of the work.

The studies of conversational implicature mainly focus on discourse analysis, but relatively few studies are from psychological perspective. This paper aims to investigate how specific words and silence of the masterpiece The Great Gatsby manifest conversational implicatures related to psychological states. The paper is based on the corpus of chapter seven from The Great Gatsby, with high frequency words (i.e. ‘the’, ‘and’, ‘well’, ‘heat’) selected quantitatively in statistics using corpus linguistics methods such as segmentation, clustering, and frequency. The analysis of examples extracted from the novel could manifest that specific words as well as silence are psychologically adequate for conversational implicatures. The psychological accounts of conversational implicature are convincing in the novel, not only rendering it a masterpiece but also leading us to the inquiry of psychologically-based implicatures.

A novel methodological approach for processing electrochemical data measured under conditions of square-wave voltammetry (SWV) is proposed. The methodology takes advantage of the chronoamperometric characteristics of the electrochemical system observed in the course of the voltammetric experiment, which are commonly not considered in conventional SWV. The method requires processing of a single voltammogram only, measured under given set of the potential modulation parameters (i.e. SW frequency and height of the potential pulses). The core idea is to analyze the variation of the current with time, considering the last quarter time period of each potential pulse of the potential modulation, instead of measuring the single current value from the very end of the pulses. Hence, a single point current measurement is replaced with a multisampling current procedure, leading to a series of new SW voltammograms measured at different time increments of each potential pulse. The novel method is illustrated by the theoretical analysis of a quasireversible electrode reaction of a dissolved and surface confined redox couple, as well as a reversible electrode reaction preceded by a chemical equilibrium reaction (CrEr mechanism).

The novel coronavirus outbreak has become a global health emergency. The common symptoms of COVID-19 disease which have affected a large population are common cold, fatigue, headache and fever. However, complications such as multiple organ failure, acute respiratory syndrome and septic shock are seen in about 5% of patients with persisting severe symptoms and post-COVID syndrome. The COVID-19 acute kidney injury in patients displays damage in the kidney, proteinuria, hematuria and elevated serum creatinine. The symptoms of acute kidney injury vary from mild to severe, which necessitates proper clinical management and renal replacement therapy (RRT). Therefore, it is necessary to understand the pathophysiology of acute kidney injury involving infiltrated immune cells, thrombosis, and cytokine regulation. There is no definite treatment for acute kidney injury; the strategy for preventing the complications will only come through clinical experience. Therefore, more studies are needed for the proper understanding of the disease etiology in acute kidney injury patients with COVID-19. New strategies, International collaboration and multi-disciplinary research are needed to be implemented for the proper management.
