The fight against excess weight and obesity is a health priority. The aim of this study was to analyze the anthropometric changes induced by two weight control programs based on approximating the diet to the theoretical ideal (increasing the consumption of foods with the largest differences between the recommended and observed intakes: cereals and vegetables – for which a minimum of 6 and 3 servings/day are recommended, respectively). The study subjects were 57 Spanish women with a body-mass index (BMI) of 24–35 kg/m², all of whom were randomly assigned to one of two slightly hypocaloric diets for a six-week period: diet V, in which the consumption of greens and vegetables was increased, or diet C, in which the consumption of cereals was increased. Dietetic and anthropometric data were collected at the start of the study and again at two and six weeks. The dietary intervention approximated the subjects’ energy provision from proteins, fats, and carbohydrates to those recommended. The Healthy Eating Index (HEI) improved with both diets. Reductions in body weight, BMI, and the amount of body fat (kg) were also achieved with both diets. Weight loss was 1.56 ± 0.93 kg and 1.02 ± 0.55 kg at two weeks with diet C and V respectively, and 2.8 ± 1.4 kg and 2.0 ± 1.3 kg at six weeks (p < 0.05). Approximating the diet to the theoretical ideal by increasing the consumption of vegetables or cereals may therefore be of use in weight control. In terms of weight loss and the improvement of the diet quality (energy profile and HEI), diet C was significantly more effective than diet V.

Introduction. T e leading place in the structure of occupational morbidity of agricultural machine operators is occupied by vertebroneurological diseases, the development of which can be associated with the impact of ergonomic factors of labor activity. T e aim of the study is to assess the ergonomic factors of working conditions on mobile agricultural machinery and to identify their impact on the formation of health disorders of agricultural machine operators. Materials and methods. Complex physiological and ergonomic researches at operation of tractors and combine harvesters of old samples of domestic production including an assessment of the organization of workplaces on compliance to requirements of ergonomics and anthropometric data of workers, temporary, statodynamic, biomechanical characteristics of working poses and movements, a functional condition of machine operators (130 people aged 20–45 years with professional experience of work not less than three years) in dynamics of a work shift are carried out. Anthropometric studies were conducted among male machine operators (663 people) aged 18–59 years and with experience in the profession for more than three years. Results. The discrepancy between the size and space-layout parameters of workplaces ergonomic requirements and anthropometric data of machine operators, causing the formation of uncomfortable working positions, increasing physical activity and the severity of the labor process. A high degree of correlation between changes in the parameters of the neuromuscular system and the severity of the discrepancy between the ergonomic parameters of anthropometric characteristics of machine operators (r=0,7). T e results of the research allowed to determine the priority measures for the prevention of vertebroneurological diseases in agricultural machine operators. Conclusions. T e organization of workplaces on domestic tractors and combine harvesters of old samples does not meet the ergonomic requirements and anthropometric data of machine operators, which is the reason for the formation of an uncomfortable working posture, increased statodynamic physical activity, early development of fatigue and fatigue in the process, which can cause the development of pathological conditions of the spine and ligamentous apparatus. Ergonomic improvement of workplaces is one of the priority measures to preserve the health of agricultural machine operators.

Introduction: The global prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) among people living with HIV/AIDS varies from 20% to 33%. Objective: to estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and associated factors in a group of HIV-infected patients on antiretroviral therapy. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with HIV-infected patients from a reference center in Bahia, Brazil. We evaluated clinical, socio-demographic and anthropometric data. MS was defined according to the guidelines of International Diabetes Federation. Results: We evaluated 152 patients with mean age of 47.3±11.6 years, 59.2% male. The main comorbidities detected were diabetes (3.3%) hypertriglyceridemia (9.3%) and metabolic syndrome (MS,38.2%). Patients with MS were predominantly women (55.2% vs 31.9%; p=0.005), older [52.1 (10.4) vs 44.3 (11.3); p<0.001], and had overweight (74.1% vs 23.4%; p<0.001). After multivariate analysis MS remained associated with age (OR = 1.076; 95% CI: 1.030 – 1.125), female sex (OR = 2.452; 95% CI: 1.114 – 5.374) and family history of hypertension (OR = 3.678; 95% CI: 1.431 – 9.395). Conclusion: Almost half of the HIV-infected patients in Bahia presents with MS which seems to be driven by classical risk factors.

Implementing digitalization in the field of production represents a major hurdle for some small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) due to the ensuing demands on employees and, in some cases, the significant financial investment required. The RobReLas research project has developed a system whose purpose is to enable an economical solution to this dilemma for SMEs in the field of automated, robot-based reconditioning of components. A laser scanner was integrated in the robot’s control. The data generated by the scanner are used to mathematically describe the virtual area of the surface to be laser-treated. The scanner recognizes the relevant area within the robot’s predefined work space by defining the maximum length and width of the relevant component. The system then automatically applies predefined and qualified repair strategies in the virtual area. Tests on nickel-based blades demonstrated the system’s economic potential, showing a reduction in reconditioning time of about 70% compared to the conventional reconditioning method. The main advantage of the system is the fact that a basic knowledge of operating robots is sufficient for the attainment of repeatable results. Further, no additional CAD/CAM workstations are required for implementation.

Despite the complexity of the human hand, most large-scale anthropometric data for the human hand includes minimal measurements. Anthropometric studies are expensive and time-consuming to conduct, and more efficient methods are needed to capture hand data and build large-scale civilian databases to impact product design and human factors analyses. A first of its kind large-scale 3D hand anthropometric database was the result of this study with 398 unique datasets. This database was created at minimal cost and time to researchers to improve accessibility to data and impact the design of products for hands.

Socially, economically, politically and emotionally (SEPE) disadvantaged children are shorter than children from affluent background. In view of previous work on the lack of association between nutrition and child growth, we performed a study in urban schoolchildren. We measured 723 children (5.83 to 13.83 years); Kupang, Indonesia; three schools with different social background. We investigated anthropometric data, clinical signs of malnutrition, physical fitness, parental education, and household equipment. Subjective self-confidence was assessed by the MacArthur test. The prevalence of stunting was between 8.5% and 46.8%. Clinical signs of under- or malnutrition were absent even in the most underprivileged children. There was no delay in tooth eruption. Underprivileged children are physically fitter than the wealthy. The correlation between height and state of nutrition (BMI_SDS, skinfold_SDS, MUAC_SDS) ranged between r = 0.69 (p < 0.01) and r = 0.43 (p < 0.01) in private school children, and between r = 0.07 (ns) and r = 0.32 (p < 0.01) in the underprivileged children. Maternal education interacted with height in affluent (r = 0.20, p < 0.01) and in underprivileged children (r = 0.20, p < 0.01). The shortness of SEPE disadvantaged children was not associated with anthropometric and clinical signs of malnutrition, nor with delay in physical development. Stunting is a complex phenomenon and may be considered a synonym of social disadvantage and poor parental education.

Background:Increasing evidence indicates that osteocalcin (OC) is involved in the regulation of glucose homeostasis. Glucocorticoid (GC) treatment is associated with impaired osteoblast function and decreased OC levels and also with the development of CG-induced diabetes mellitus (GIDM). However, whether decreased OC levels in GC-treated subjects contribute to GIDM is not well known.Objectives:To analyse whether OC levels in GC-treated patients are associated with the presence of GIDM.Methods:127 patients (aged 62±18years, 63% women) on GC treatment for autoimmune diseases (≥5mg/day, >3 months) were included. Clinical and anthropometric data were analysed, including the GC dose and treatment duration, presence of GIDM, fragility fractures, densitometric osteoporosis and bone formation (OC, bone alkaline phosphatase [BAP], PINP) and resorption markers (urinary NTX, serum CTX). The cut-offs of each bone marker for the presence of GIDM were estimated and optimized with the Youden index and included in the logistic regression analysis (adjusted for BMI, age and GC doses).Results:17.3% of patients presented GIDM. Diabetic subjects were older (70.5±12.2 vs. 59.6±18.4, p=0.001) and had a higher BMI than non-diabetics (30±5.2 vs. 26±4.2, p=0.002). No differences were observed in GC dose or duration or in the presence of vertebral fractures. Diabetics showed lower levels of OC (7.57±1.01 vs. 11.56±1; p<0.001), PINP (21.48±1.01 vs. 28.39±1; p=0.0048), NTx (24.91±1.01 vs. 31.7±1; p=0.036) and CTX (0.2±1.01 vs. 0.3±1; p=0.0016) with similar BAP values. The best discriminating cut-offs for GIDM presence were: <9.25ng/mL for OC, <24ng/mL for PINP, <27.5nMol/mM for NTX and <0.25ng/mL for CTX. On multivariate analysis OC (<9.25) was the only marker related to the presence of GIDM (OR 6.1; CI95% 1.87-19.89; p=0.001).Conclusion:Decreased OC levels in GC-treated patients are associated with an increased risk of GIDM, a finding that was not observed with other bone turnover markers, further confirming the involvement of OC in the glucose homeostasis regulation in this entity.Disclosure of Interests:None declared
