GÉNERO Y ANTOLOGÍAS: LA REVISIÓN DEL CANON EN LA ERA DE LA CIBERCULTURA Y EL PROYECTO CIEN DE CIEN (2015-2016)

En este artículo se estudia la importancia que Internet ha tenido en los últimos años en la recepción de las poetas españolas contemporáneas. Para ello, se recurre tanto a la teoría literaria feminista y al ciberfeminismo como a algunas de las contribuciones clave en el estudio de los procesos de canonicidad, específicamente, a la sociología de Pierre Bourdieu y a la teoría de los polisistemas de Itamar Even-Zohar. Desde este marco teórico, se analiza la antología virtual Cien de cien de Elena Medel, una selección que permite repensar las relaciones entre autoridad, cánones y cibercultura en el siglo XXI. Abstract: This article aims to study the importance that the Internet has had in the reception of Spanish women poets in the last few years. For that purpose, feminist literary criticism and cyberfeminism will be used, as well as some of the key contributors to the study of canon, particularly Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology and Itamar Even-Zohar’s theory of polysystems. With this theoretical framework, attention will be paid to the digital anthology Cien de cien by Elena Medel, which enables us to rethink the relationship between authority, literary canons and cyberculture in the 21st Century.

Modern Polish ideas about the Iberian Peninsula can often be summarised in slogans: azure sky, beautiful women, bullfighting, Don Quixote from La Mancha. Has this image of Spain been with us for centuries, or has it been “produced” by modern mass tourism? The aim of this article is to analyse travel texts from the 19th and 20th centuries describing journeys around the Iberian Peninsula and an attempt to answer the question of what Spain looks like in the eyes of Poles deprived of their own statehood. Is it terra incognita, an exotic country with a rich history, in which travellers find a reflection in architecture and customs, fascinated by Madrid, Barcelona, and Salamanca? Or maybe it evokes disappointment? The article compares travel letters by four Polish travellers and historians: Aleksander Hirschberg, Adolf Pawiński, Józef Wawel-Louis, and Stanisław Starża. The analysis of the letters was divided into thematic blocks: historical Polish-Spanish relations, perceptions and impressions, opinions about Spaniards and Spanish women, and cultural controversies (corrida, cockfighting).

Polymorphisms in Genes Involved in Osteoblast Differentiation and Function Are Associated with Anthropometric Phenotypes in Spanish Women

Much of the genetic variance associated with osteoporosis is still unknown. Bone mineral density (BMD) is the main predictor of osteoporosis risk, although other anthropometric phenotypes have recently gained importance. The aim of this study was to analyze the association of SNPs in genes involved in osteoblast differentiation and function with BMD, body mass index (BMI), and waist (WC) and hip (HC) circumferences. Four genes that affect osteoblast differentiation and/or function were selected from among the differentially expressed genes in fragility hip fracture (FOXC1, CTNNB1, MEF2C, and EBF2), and an association study of four single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was conducted in a cohort of 1001 women. Possible allelic imbalance was also studied for SNP rs87939 of the CTNNB1 gene. We found significant associations of SNP rs87939 of the CTNNB1 gene with LS-sBMD, and of SNP rs1366594 of the MEF2C gene with BMI, after adjustment for confounding variables. The SNP of the MEF2C gene also showed a significant trend to association with FN-sBMD (p = 0.009). A possible allelic imbalance was ruled out as no differences for each allele were detected in CTNNB1 expression in primary osteoblasts obtained from homozygous women. In conclusion, we demonstrated that two SNPs in the MEF2C and CTNNB1 genes, both implicated in osteoblast differentiation and/or function, are associated with BMI and LS-sBMD, respectively.

Measuring Resilience in Women with Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a multifactorial disease with pathophysiological factors not yet well known; it also presents a wide symptomatic range that makes us think about the need for multidisciplinary management. It is a chronic disease in which there is no definitive treatment, and is associated in a large majority of cases with psychological pathology. Connecting comorbidities and multimorbidities on a neurobiological, neuropsychological, and pathophysiological level could significantly contribute to their more successful prevention and treatment. In our study, resilience is analyzed as an adjunctive measure in the management of endometriosis. Methods: A multi-centre, cross-sectional study was performed to analyse resilience levels in a sample of Spanish women suffering from endometriosis. CDRIS-25, CDRIS-10, BDI, the STAI, and the SF-36 Health Questionnaire were used for assessments. A representative group of 202 women with endometriosis was recruited by consecutive sampling. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed for both resilience scales. Results: Mean CDRIS-25 and CDRIS-10 scores were 69.58 (SD 15.1) and 29.37 (SD 7.2), respectively. Women with adenomyosis and without signs of deep endometriosis showed the lowest scores. The best predictive model included women’s age, years of endometriosis evolution, number of pregnancies, and history of fertility problems as the best predictive factors. Conclusions: Women build resilience as the number of years of evolution of the disease increases. Symptoms such as dyspareunia and continued abdominal pain were more prevalent among less resilient women.

New Motherhood Concepts, Implications for Healthcare. A Qualitative Study

The aim of this study was to explore the experience of women who take care of their children in postpartum and who desire to be understood by society, with no judgements. For this purpose, a qualitative methodology was followed. In-depth interviews, discussion groups, and an online forum were used for data collection. The participants were Spanish women that had given birth in the past 6 months, and their partners. Healthcare specialists with experience in the topic were also included. Results showed three main categories: lack of priority, self-demand, and self-esteem changes. As a conclusion, the concept of motherhood needs to be redefined, as women feel that they are living under the pressure of being a “perfect mother”. It is important that mothers allow themselves to fail in reaching the imposed requirements. Simple acceptance of motherhood boundaries could help in this transition.

Health Risk Assessment of Exposure to 15 Essential and Toxic Elements in Spanish Women of Reproductive Age: A Case Study

This case study investigates the exposure of 119 Spanish women of reproductive age to 5 essential (Co, Cu, Mn, V, Zn) and 10 toxic (Ba, Be, Cs, Ni, Pb, Pt, Sb, Th, Al, U) elements and assesses their risk. The essential elements (Co, Cu, Mn, V, and Zn) showed average concentrations (GM: geometric mean) of 0.8, 35, 0.5, 0.2, and 347 μg/L, respectively. Five of the toxic elements (Ba, Cs, Ni, Al, U) exhibited detection frequencies of 100%. The GM concentrations of the novel toxic elements were 12 μg/L (Al), 0.01 μg/L (Pt), 0.02 μg/L (U), 0.12 μg/L (Th), 0.009 μg/L (Be) and 4 μg/L (Cs). The urine analysis was combined with a survey to assess any variations between subgroups and potential predictors of exposure to elements in the female population. Significant differences were obtained between the rural and urban areas studied for the toxic element Cs, with higher levels found in mothers living in urban areas. In relation to diet, statistically significantly higher levels of essential (Cu) and toxic (Ba) elements were detected in women with a high consumption of fish, while mothers who consumed a large quantity of legumes presented higher levels of the toxic element Ni (p = 0.0134). In a risk-assessment context, hazard quotients (HQs) greater than 1 were only observed for the essential elements Zn and Cu in P95. No deficiency was found regarding the only essential element for which a biomonitoring equivalent for nutritional deficit is available (Zn). For the less-studied toxic elements (Al, Pt, U, Th, Be, and Cs), HQs were lower than 1, and thus, the health risk due to exposure to these elements is expected to be low for the female population under study.

Gender Differences in the Association Between Cataract and Mental Health in Adults With Diabetes: A Cross-Sectional Analysis From the Spanish National Health Survey 2017

Objective: This study aimed to explore gender differences in the associations between cataracts and self-reported depression and chronic anxiety in Spanish adults with diabetes.Methods: Cross-sectional data from the Spanish Health Survey 2017 were analyzed. Inclusion criterion was a positive response to the question “Have you ever been diagnosed with diabetes?” Diabetes, cataracts, depression and chronic anxiety were based on self-reported lifetime diagnosis. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to assess the association between cataracts and depression or anxiety among respondents with diabetes, stratifying by gender.Results: Out of a total 23,089 respondents, 2,266 people self-reported suffering from diabetes (50.2% women; average age 69.7 ± 12.7 years; age range 15-98 years). In people with diabetes, the presence of cataracts was associated with significantly higher odds for depression (OR = 1.655; 95% CI = 1.295-2.115). Gender-stratified analyses showed that only women with cataracts were significantly associated with higher odds for depression (OR = 1.762; 95% CI = 1.307-2.374) and chronic anxiety (OR = 1.519; 95% CI = 1.067-2.163).Conclusion: Cataracts are a significant risk factor for depression and chronic anxiety in Spanish women with diabetes, but not in men. Women with both diabetes and cataracts require assessment for depression and chronic anxiety, and possibly earlier interventions in order to reduce the potential risk of further mental health complications.

Type 2 Diabetes and all-cause mortality among Spanish women with breast cancer

Purpose To explore the effect of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) on the risk of death among women with breast cancer (BC). Methods A survival analysis was conducted among a cohort of women diagnosed with BC between 2006 and 2012 in Spain (n = 4,493). Biopsy or surgery confirmed BC cases were identified through the state population-based cancer registry with information on patients’ characteristics and vital status. Physician-diagnosed T2DM was confirmed based on primary health care clinical history. Cox regression analyses were used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for all-cause death. Analyses were adjusted for age, hospital size, several clinical characteristics (including BC stage and histology, among others) and treatment modalities. Results Among the 4,493 BC women, 388 (8.6%) had coexisting T2DM. Overall, 1,299 (28.9%) BC women died during the completion of the follow-up and 785 (17.5%) did so during the first five years after BC diagnosis, resulting in a five-year survival rate of 82.5%. The death rate was higher in women with T2DM (43.8% died during whole period and 26.0% during the first five years) when compared with women without T2DM (27.5% and 16.7%, respectively). Accordingly, all-cause mortality was higher in women with T2DM (aHR: 1.22; 95% CI 1.03–1.44), especially if T2DM was diagnosed before BC (aHR:1.24; 95% CI 1.03–1.50) and in women with BC diagnosed before 50 years (aHR: 2.38; 95% CI 1.04–5.48). Conclusions T2DM was associated with higher all-cause mortality among Spanish women with BC, particularly when the T2DM diagnosis was prior to the BC.

The Six-Item Version of the Internet Addiction Test: Its Development, Psychometric Properties, and Measurement Invariance among Women with Eating Disorders and Healthy School and University Students

Internet addiction (IA) is widespread, comorbid with other conditions, and commonly undetected, which may impede recovery. The Internet Addiction Test (IAT) is widely used to evaluate IA among healthy respondents, with less agreement on its dimensional structure. This study investigated the factor structure, invariance, predictive validity, criterion validity, and reliability of the IAT among Spanish women with eating disorders (EDs, N = 123), Chinese school children (N = 1072), and Malay/Chinese university students (N = 1119). In school children, four factors with eigen values > 1 explained 50.2% of the variance, with several items cross-loading on more than two factors and three items failing to load on any factor. Among 19 tested models, CFA revealed excellent fit of a unidimensional six-item IAT among ED women and university students (χ2(7) = 8.695, 35.038; p = 0.275, 0.001; CFI = 0.998, 981; TLI = 0.996, 0.960; RMSEA = 0.045, 0.060; SRMR = 0.0096, 0.0241). It was perfectly invariant across genders, academic grades, majors, internet use activities, nationalities (Malay vs. Chinese), and Malay/Chinese female university students vs. Spanish women with anorexia nervosa, albeit it was variant at the scalar level in tests involving other EDs, signifying increased tendency for IA in pathological overeating. The six-item IAT correlated with the effects of internet use on academic performance at a greater level than the original IAT (r = −0.106, p < 0.01 vs. r = −0.78, p < 0.05), indicating superior criterion validity. The six-item IAT is a robust and brief measure of IA in healthy and diseased individuals from different cultures.
