In vitro Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Activity of Immunity BoosterTea Formulation

Abstract-Currently, there is much growing interest in the use of medicinal plants as modulators of the complex immune system. Through a number of vast researches conducted in the area, it is being explored that many of the phytochemicals in the form of alkaloids,tannins,flavonoids,terpenoids,polysaccharides, lactones, and glycoside products areresponsibletocausealterationsintheimmunomodulatory properties. Keeping in mind, the tremendous potential of the medicinal plants and their derived drugs, this study is undertaken and an immunobooster tea formulation (IMBF-01-20) was designed and in vitroantimicrobial and antioxidant activity was tested. The results showed strong antimicrobial activity of formulation(IMBF-01-20) against Staph.aureuswith diameter of zone of inhibition of 32 mm in methanol extract followed by 20 mm in E.coli. While hexane extract also showing good inhibition of test organisms followed by Ethanol extract.Considering the growing demand of natural antioxidant, IMBF-01-20 was tested for their antioxidant activity using DPPH radical scavenging assay.Antioxidant activity (93.4%) was observed in immunobooster tea formulation and revealed it as a natural antioxidant.

 Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate the pharmacological evaluation of previously isolated compounds (CR-1 to CR-5) from the areal part of Cuscuta reflexa Roxb. is reported.Methods: The antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of the isolated compounds (CR-1 to CR-5) from C. reflexa was determined by the disc-diffusion method and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) model, respectively. The antimicrobial activity was performed against four strains Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.Results: The results revealed that highest zone of inhibition is measured by compound CR-5 against E. coli. The antioxidant activity is evaluated for in vitro antioxidant activity using DPPH radical scavenging activity, inhibitory concentration 50% (IC50) (120.92–76.38 %), respectively. The results indicate that isolated compound CR-1 and CR-2 having IC50 76.38 and 76.94 μg/ml, respectively, showed potent antioxidant activity comparable to standard ascorbic acid (IC50 43.42 μg/ml).Conclusion: This study suggests that areal part of C. reflexa have bioactive compounds for a new antimicrobial and antioxidant drug development.

Phytotherapy has known a great evolution all the world and some medicinal plants are important remedies of some diseases. Ammoides atlantica is one of the medicinal plants used in folk medicine. This study aims to estimate the total phenolics and flavonoids contents then to investigate both in vitro antioxidant activity models of aqueous extract (AqE) from Ammoides atlantica. Total polyphenol contents were determined using Folin Ciocalteu's reagent; flavonoids were quantified employing the AlCl3 Method. The in vitro antioxidant property was assessed by DPPH-scavenging radicals and lipid peroxidation assays. The results revealed that Ammoides atlantica aqueous extract presented a high total phenolic and flavonoid contents with values of 85.56±4.71 µg GAE (gallic acid equivalent)/mg and 40.55±4.09 µg QE (quercitin equivalent)/mg dry extract, respectively. This extract shows a good DPPH radical scavenging and β-carotene bleaching activities with an IC50 of 107.48±5.9 µg/mL and 130.17±5.52 µg/mL, respectively. This study indicates that the aqueous extract from Ammoides atlantica has potent antioxidant effects and may prove to be of latent health benefit as well as supplementary sources for natural antioxidants drugs. A series of β-Isatin aldehyde-N,N′-thiocarbohydrazone derivatives were synthesized and assayed for theirin vitroantimicrobial and antioxidant activity. The new compounds were characterized based on spectral (FT-IR, NMR, MS) analyses. All the test compounds possessed a broad spectrum of activity having MIC values rangeing from 12.5 to 400 μg/ml against the tested microorganisms. Among the compounds3e,3jand3nshow highest significant antimicrobial activity. The free radical scavenging effects of the test compounds against stable free radical DPPH (α,α-diphenyl-β-picryl hydrazyl) and H2O2were measured spectrophotometrically. Compounds3j,3n,3l, and3e, respectively, had the most effective antioxidant activity against DPPH and H2O2scavenging activity.

Objectives: Argyreia cuneata (Willd.) Ker Gawl. belongs to the family Convolvulaceae. The present study was performed to screen the potential of crude extract of various parts of A. cuneata to exhibit antimicrobial activity. Methods: Extraction of shade dried and powdered leaf, stem and flower of A. cuneata was carried out by maceration technique. Antibacterial and antifungal activity of extracts was evaluated by Agar well diffusion and Poisoned food technique respectively. Antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS radical scavenging and ferric reducing assays. Results:  All extracts were effective in inhibiting test bacteria and the susceptibility of bacteria to extracts was in the order: Bacillus cereus > Shigella flexneri > Escherichia coli > Salmonella typhimurium. Leaf extract and stem extract exhibited highest and least antibacterial activity, respectively. Extracts were effective in causing inhibition of seed-borne fungi viz. Aspergillus niger and Bipolaris sp to >50%. Leaf extract exhibited marked antifungal activity followed by flower extract and stem extract. All extracts were shown to exhibit concentration dependent scavenging and reducing activity. Antioxidant activity of extracts observed was in the order: leaf extract > flower extract > stem extract.  Conclusion: Among various parts of A. cuneata, leaf extract exhibited marked antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. The plant can be employed as an effective antimicrobial and antioxidant agent in suitable form. Further studies may be undertaken to recover phytochemicals from the plant and to investigate the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of isolated components. <p>In the present work methanolic and water extracts of 19 medicinal plants, commonly used in Sudanese folk medicines against gastrointestinal tract, infectious diseases were investigated for their antioxidant activity. Antioxidant assays were carried out by using different in vitro models such as DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging and Iron chelating activity. Methanolic and water extracts of <em>Punica granatum </em>showed the highest total antioxidant activity of 71±0.03 and 73±0.01 respectively. The antioxidant activities of water extracts were poor when compared to the methanol extract. The iron chelating power of methanol and aqueous extracts of <em>Commiphora myrrha</em> 58±0.01 and <em>Azadirachta indica</em> 57±0.20 respectively.</p>

Oral hygiene is important to the generality of the human healthcare system. For this, the antifungal activities of the aqueous and ethanol extracts of four medicinal plants of Jatropha curcas (stem), Eucaluptus golbulus (leaves), Vernonia amygdalina (stem) and Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides (root) were carried out in vitro against three species of Candida associated with oral thrush namely C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis using the disc diffusion agar assay. The zones of inhibition varied with the test organisms as well as the extracts. The ethanolic extract of Jatropha curcas showed the highest zone of inhibition of 10.88 ± 0.22 mm against C. albicans while the least zone of inhibition (6.13 ± 0.13 mm) was exhibited by the ethanol extract of Z. zanthoxyloides on C. glabrata. The preliminary phytochemical screening showed the presence of tannin, saponin, alkaloids, flavonoids and reducing sugar in all plant samples. This study can be further used as a foundation for the screening of phytochemical constituents by pharmaceuticals for the control and eradication of oral thrush.

Medicinal plants are good alternate of antibiotics against many bacterial as well as other diseases. Santalum album (Sandal) and Cymbopogon (Lemon grass) are two important medicinal plants whose important components were extracted by sequential extraction from non-polar to polar solvents. The study was aimed at finding antibacterial and radical scavenging potential of Santalum album (Sandal) and Cymbopogon (Lemon grass). Study Design: In vitro study. Setting: Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Gujrat, Gujrat. Period: 12 months. Material and Methods: Sequential extracts of Santalum album and Cymbopogon with n-hexane, chloroform, acetone, ethylacetate, ethanol, butanol and water respectively were prepared to evaluate antibacterial activity against Staph aureus (25923), Staph aureus (38541), E.coli (25922), E.coli (35318), Streptococcus pyrogenes (Tc-11-2) and Shigella sonnei (BB-8). 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was used to assess antioxidant activity. Results: Ethanolic and acetone extracts of sandal and lemongrass showed significant inhibtory activity against all seven strains. In case of sandal, acetone extract exhibited highest inhibitory activity against Staph aureus (25923) with 17±2 mm zone of inhibition while ethanolic extract of lemon grass showed highest activity with 16.333 ± 1.154mm zone of inhibition against E.Coli (35318). Other solvents including chloroform, n-hexane, ethyl acetate and butanol also showed considerable antibacterial activity, but water extracts of both plants showed no activity. All polarity based extracts of both plants exhibited antioxidant activity, ethanolic extracts of sandal and lemon grass showed highest radical scavenging activity with 84.366 ±1.504% and 83.766 ±4.272% inhibitions respectively. The minimum antioxidant activity was observed for chloroform extracts of sandal and n-hexane extract of lemongrass. Conclusion: we concluded that some plants have good antibacterial and antioxidant potential. Their phytochemical analysis can be carried out to find potent antibacterial and antioxidant compounds. This will be effective in combating bacterial diseases because mostly microbes are developing resistance against currently available antibiotics.

Abstract Little is known about which secondary metabolites are responsible for inhibiting pathogenic bacteria and reducing the pro-oxidant effect on the leaves of four medicinal plants used as phytobiotic in animal production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of four medicinal plants (Anacardium occidentale, Psidium guajava, Morinda citrifolia and Moringa oleifera.) in vitro. A total of six bacterial strains were inoculated, then minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was evaluated in fine powder and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and MBC were determined on the aqueous extract. Also, the in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated through 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl, as well as the main secondary metabolites were identified and quantified by chromatographic analysis. The results showed that Anacardium occidentale and Psidium guajava leaves had higher antimicrobial activity against all bacterial strains. In addition, Morinda citrifolia inhibited S. aureus in the aqueous extract, although without in vitro bactericidal effect, while Moringa oleifera leaf did not show antimicrobial effect. All plants showed antioxidant capacity, standing out Anacardium occidentale and Psidium guajava. Mainly the leaves of Anacardium occidentale showed high concentrations of quercetin 3-O-glucoside-7-O-rhamnoside, kaempeferol-7-O-glucoside, quercetin, caffeic acid, and cinnamic acid. Apparently, the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity are due to the main polyphenolic compounds identified in medicinal plants (mainly Anacardium occidentale and Psidium guajava); however, further studies are necessary to elucidate the exact mechanism.

Objective: The present study was carried out to evaluate the in vitro preliminary phytochemical analysis and antioxidant activity of methanolic leaf extracts of Corchorus olitorius L. The in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH radical scavenging activity method.Methods: Fresh jute leaves (immature, mature and senescence) were collected, air dried and the crude powder was prepared for phytochemical and antioxidant analysis. The powder was mixed with 70% methanol and the supernatant was separated. The antioxidant activity of this methanolic extract was measured on the basis of the scavenging activity of the stable 1, 1-diphenyl 2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical with slight modifications. Phytochemical analysis was performed according to standard laboratory protocol.Results: The results indicated the presence of different phytochemicals viz. glycosides, steroids, cholesterol, alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, riboflavin, saponins and terpenoids. The sample also showed antioxidant activity by inhibiting DPPH radical. The significant antioxidant activity of methanolic leaf extract of might be due to the presence of saponins, phenols, flavonoids and alkaloids found in the preliminary phytochemical analysis.Conclusion: Present study reveals that the jute leaf possesses different phytonutrients and exhibited DPPH radical scavenging activity, and therefore, may be used for therapeutic purposes.

Abtrast: This research aimed to explore the antioxidant activity of microalgae oil through in vitro experiment and investigate the constituents of microalgae oil. The antioxidant activity was determined using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH)radical scavenging assay,2,2-Azinobis (3-ehtylbenzothiazolin-6-sulfnicAcid)(ABTS)radical scavenging assay, the reducing power,β-Carotene bleaching assay and Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity(ORAC)assay. BHT、α-tocopherol or Vc were compared as the reference. It can be confirmed that microalgae oil has moderate antioxidant ability. According to GC-MS analysis, the most abundant compounds in microalgae oil were palmitic acid, docosahexaenoic acid and tetradecanoic,constituting 38.1%, 34.24% and 3.39%, respectively.
