"Immersive Scholar: A Guidebook for Documenting and Publishing Experiential Scholarship Works" offers a model for librarians, technologists, and scholars collaborating on the production of new forms of scholarly projects, particularly those designed for large scale or immersive spaces. Born from Immersive Scholar, a three-year grant to the NC State University Libraries from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the case studies and principles laid out in this guidebook highlight pragmatic and non-technical opportunities for integrating experiential scholarship within the current scholarly ecosystem. Borrowing from the literature and ideas of digital humanities, open science, software preservation, and academic publishing, the authors present a perspective balanced between theory and application. This guidebook paired with other resources from Immersive Scholar forms the foundation of a toolkit for the conceptualization, building, displaying, and sharing of scholarship in the broad and varied world of large scale, visual, immersive, and experimental work.

NC State University Libraries has been awarded a three-year, $414,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to develop extensible models and programs for the creation and sharing of digital scholarship in large-scale and immersive environments. Entitled “Visualizing Digital Scholarship in Libraries and Learning Spaces,” or Immersive Scholar for short, the grant aims to 1) build a community of practice of scholars and librarians to help visually immersive scholarly work enter the research lifecycle; and 2) overcome technical and resource barriers that limit the number of scholars and libraries who use visualization environments and the impact of generated knowledge. This presentation introduced the grant and it's components to The Higher Education Campus Alliance of Advanced Visualization (THE CAAV) at THE CAAV's 2017 annual conference.

Purpose This paper aims to explore two separate legacy oral history digitization projects at one institution and how the project teams approached the different issues and challenges these projects presented. Design/methodology/approach The approach compares two case studies of how digitization of legacy oral history collections was carried out. The paper discusses these projects utilizing a lifecycle model approach and reveals how archival and digital humanities perspectives drove some of the projects’ differences. Findings The authors find that when working with digitizing legacy oral history collections, each collection will require different approaches and methods of problem solving. In large institutions with multiple repositories, it can be useful for project teams to consult each other to develop best practices. Practical implications The two case studies presented in this paper can serve as models for other institutions digitizing many oral history collections and serve as a model for communication and collaboration in larger institutions with multiple repositories. Originality/value This paper compares and contrasts two case studies of digitization projects involving legacy oral history collections in different units of one large institution. Project teams were influenced by different approaches. One project was conducted by archivists and the other led by a digital humanities librarian. Differing professional foci provided different perspectives about collection characteristics and, subsequently, led to different approaches that impacted implementation of the projects.

Immersive Scholar, a genre of digital scholarship that produces large scale visualizations, has emphasized physically immersive user experience. Examples of these projects can be found at https://osf.io/ygcn2/. This report strives to meet a need that will expand its scope and impact, and identify the realms in which Immersive Scholar belong that will allow it to bring immersive and scholarly depth. It is thus intended to provide awareness about challenges and opportunities to stakeholders interested in progressing new forms of digital scholarship (in particular, Immersive Scholar). North Carolina State University Libraries engaged Lynnee Argabright over summer 2020 to conduct a landscape analysis to help foresee industry collaboration prospects for Immersive Scholar. This report will also review the current landscape of similar presentations of immersive digital scholarship as well as explore quality evaluation for tenure and review to help define assessment expectations for Immersive Scholar projects.

Water is a critical natural resource that sustains the productivity of many economic sectors, whether directly or indirectly. Climate change alongside rapid growth and development are a threat to water sustainability and regional productivity. In this paper, we develop an extension to the economic input-output model to assess the impact of water supply disruptions to regional economies. The model utilizes the inoperability variable, which measures the extent to which an infrastructure system or economic sector is unable to deliver its intended output. While the inoperability concept has been utilized in previous applications, this paper offers extensions that capture the time-varying nature of inoperability as the sectors recover from a disruptive event, such as drought. The model extension is capable of inserting inoperability adjustments within the drought timeline to capture time-varying likelihoods and severities, as well as the dependencies of various economic sectors on water. The model was applied to case studies of severe drought in two regions: (1) the state of Massachusetts (MA) and (2) the US National Capital Region (NCR). These regions were selected to contrast drought resilience between a mixed urban–rural region (MA) and a highly urban region (NCR). These regions also have comparable overall gross domestic products despite significant differences in the distribution and share of the economic sectors comprising each region. The results of the case studies indicate that in both regions, the utility and real estate sectors suffer the largest economic loss; nonetheless, results also identify region-specific sectors that incur significant losses. For the NCR, three sectors in the top 10 ranking of highest economic losses are government-related, whereas in the MA, four sectors in the top 10 are manufacturing sectors. Furthermore, the accommodation sector has also been included in the NCR case intuitively because of the high concentration of museums and famous landmarks. In contrast, the Wholesale Trade sector was among the sectors with the highest economic losses in the MA case study because of its large geographic size conducive for warehouses used as nodes for large-scale supply chain networks. Future modeling extensions could potentially include analysis of water demand and supply management strategies that can enhance regional resilience against droughts. Other regional case studies can also be pursued in future efforts to analyze various categories of drought severity beyond the case studies featured in this paper.

Neurodegenerative diseases are etiologically and clinically heterogeneous conditions, often reflecting a spectrum of disease rather than well-defined disorders. The underlying molecular complexity of these diseases has made the discovery and validation of useful biomarkers challenging. The search of characteristic genetic and transcriptomic indicators for preclinical disease diagnosis, prognosis, or subtyping is an area of ongoing effort and interest. The next generation of biomarker studies holds promise by implementing meaningful longitudinal and multi-modal approaches in large scale biobank and healthcare system scale datasets. This work will only be possible in an open science framework. This review summarizes the current state of genetic and transcriptomic biomarkers in Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, providing a comprehensive landscape of recent literature and future directions.

ZusammenfassungDas EU-geförderte Projekt PARTHENOS steht für „Pooling Activities, Resources and Tools for Heritage E-research Networking, Optimization and Synergies“ und arbeitet an der Verbesserung der Nutzung von digitalen Forschungsinfrastrukturen in den Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften. Der Artikel stellt die Projektergebnisse der letzten drei Jahre, die sich auf eine technische und semantische Harmonisierung der verschiedenen bereits existierenden digitalen Forschungsinfrastrukturen, wie z. B. DARIAH, CLARIN etc. konzentrieren, vor. Darüber hinaus hat das Projekt zum Ziel, durch spezifische Trainings- und Schulungsmaßnahmen weitere Forschende der EU an die Digital Humanities, deren Methoden und digitalen Dienste heranzuführen. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auch auf der Sensibilisierung für die Themen Open Science, FAIR und Forschungsdatenmanagement.

Proximity-based apps have been changing the way people interact with each other in the physical world. To help people extend their social networks, proximity-based nearby-stranger (NS) apps that encourage people to make friends with nearby strangers have gained popularity recently. As another typical type of proximity-based apps, some ridesharing (RS) apps allowing drivers to search nearby passengers and get their ridesharing requests also become popular due to their contribution to economy and emission reduction. In this paper, we concentrate on the location privacy of proximity-based mobile apps. By analyzing the communication mechanism, we find that many apps of this type are vulnerable to large-scale location spoofing attack (LLSA). We accordingly propose three approaches to performing LLSA. To evaluate the threat of LLSA posed to proximity-based mobile apps, we perform real-world case studies against an NS app named Weibo and an RS app called Didi. The results show that our approaches can effectively and automatically collect a huge volume of users’ locations or travel records, thereby demonstrating the severity of LLSA. We apply the LLSA approaches against nine popular proximity-based apps with millions of installations to evaluate the defense strength. We finally suggest possible countermeasures for the proposed attacks.

Summary Objective: The current observational research literature shows extensive publication bias and contradiction. The Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) initiative seeks to improve research reproducibility through open science. Methods: OHDSI has created an international federated data source of electronic health records and administrative claims that covers nearly 10% of the world’s population. Using a common data model with a practical schema and extensive vocabulary mappings, data from around the world follow the identical format. OHDSI’s research methods emphasize reproducibility, with a large-scale approach to addressing confounding using propensity score adjustment with extensive diagnostics; negative and positive control hypotheses to test for residual systematic error; a variety of data sources to assess consistency and generalizability; a completely open approach including protocol, software, models, parameters, and raw results so that studies can be externally verified; and the study of many hypotheses in parallel so that the operating characteristics of the methods can be assessed. Results: OHDSI has already produced findings in areas like hypertension treatment that are being incorporated into practice, and it has produced rigorous studies of COVID-19 that have aided government agencies in their treatment decisions, that have characterized the disease extensively, that have estimated the comparative effects of treatments, and that the predict likelihood of advancing to serious complications. Conclusions: OHDSI practices open science and incorporates a series of methods to address reproducibility. It has produced important results in several areas, including hypertension therapy and COVID-19 research.

AbstractEngaging and exciting students about the environment remains a challenge in contemporary society, even while objective measures show the rapid state of the world's environment declining. To illuminate the integration of drama and environmental education as a means of engaging students in environmental issues, the work of performance companies Evergreen Theatre, Leapfish and Eaton Gorge Theatre Company, the ecological oratorio Plague and the Moonflower, and a school-based trial of play-building were examined through survey data and participant observations. These case studies employed drama in different ways — theatre-in-education, play-building, and large-scale performance event. The four case studies provide quantitative and qualitative evidence for drama-based activities leading to an improvement in knowledge about the environment and understandings about the consequences of one's actions. In observing and participating in these case studies, we reflect that drama is a means of synthesising and presenting scientific research in ways that are creative and multi-layered, and which excite students, helping maintain their attention and facilitating their engagement.
