Objective: To determine the histological spectrum of non-malignant lesions in abdominal hysterectomy specimens from women of reproductive age group. Study Design and Setting: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out at a private hospital in Karachi from December 2018 to December 2019. Methodology: The uterine specimens of patients (n=262) between the ages of 24 to 55 years were collected. Hysterectomies done due to any benign uterine disease were included in the study. Hysterectomies due to malignant causes were excluded. Pathological diagnosis was done on light microscopy using routine hematoxylin and eosin staining technique. Data collected during the study period included patient's age, clinical history/diagnosis and histological diagnosis. On receiving the hysterectomy specimens as per protocol, specimens were immediately put in 10% formalin, appropriately labeled for patient’s name, gender, age and procedure. In histopathology lab, grossing of the specimens was done using standard protocols. Frequency and variables were analyzed by using descriptive statistics of SPSS-version 22. Results: Total n=262 hysterectomies were received. Mean age of all the patients was 34.7 years ±7.8. Non-malignant uterine pathologies on histopathology included 124(47.7%) leiomyomas, 52(20%) adenomyosis, 32(12.3%) endometrial polyps, 16(6.2%) endometrial hyperplasia, 6(2.3%) endometritis, 3(1.2%) disordered proliferative endometrium and 1(0.4%) endometrial stromal nodule. Rest of the cases showed normal phases of endometrial cycle. Only two cases (0.76%) out of 262 received as clinically benign uterine disease, were diagnosed as malignant on histopathology. Conclusion: Leiomyoma is the most common uterine pathology diagnosed in clinical setting as well as encountered at histopathological examination followed by Adenomyosis and endometrial polyps in women of reproductive age group in Pakistan.

Background: The prevalence of endometriosis is seen to be from 10% to 20% in the reproductive age group whereas that of endometriosis is 30% to 70% among women presenting with infertility. In our study the incidence of endometriosis appears to be 6.31%. The objective is study the common presentation in cases of endometriosis and their diagnostic accuracy with the help of radiological modalities . laparoscopy and histopathology remains the gold standard modality to diagnose endometriosis. Methods: A total of 200 patients with adnexal masses in the women of reproductive age group were studied. Endometriosis was identified by laparoscopy in 12 cases and confirmed by histopathological examination. Results: Out of the above 200 patients, 6.31% (12 cases) were diagnosed as cases of endometriosis. Out of which, 25% patients had moderate to severe endometriosis. The ultrasound turned out to be an important method in diagnosing the cases of endometriosis Conclusions: The symptoms and clinical signs should raise the suspicion of pelvic endometriosis.ultrasound plays an important role in diagnosing the cases of endometriosis

Background: Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is debilitating condition affecting 14-25% of women of reproductive age. It has significant impact on women’s personal, social, physical and quality of life. Present study is planned to study causes, investigation along with management of structural causes of abnormal uterine bleeding in reproductive age group. Methods: Consecutive type of non-probability sampling was used for selection of study subjects. A total of 100 gynaecology OPD women diagnosed with menorrhagia of 15-45 years age group were enrolled in study. Results: Mean age of the study subjects was between 26-35 years (47%). 67% were from low socio-economic class while 33% were from middle class. Maximum number of women (66%) had symptoms for less than 6 months. 47% presented with Menorrhagia. 89% were Multiparous, and 11% were Nulliparous. Most common structural causes of AUB was leiomyoma (41%) followed by polyps (23%), adenomyosis (17%), endometrial hyperplasia (15%) and endometrial carcinoma (4%). Prevalence of anemia was 73% in present study. Maximum leiomyoma were treated medically while higher percentage of polyps and hyperplasia was treated surgically. Most commonly performed surgery was polypectomy (20%) followed by dilatation and curettage (17%) and myomectomy (15%). Total abdominal hysterectomy was done in 8% cases while radical hysterectomy was done in 2% cases. Conclusions: Benign lesions of endometrium account for majority of cases presenting with AUB in reproductive age group. Other premalignant and malignant causes should also be considered. High prevalence of anemia was observed in these cases. A comparative clinicopathological study will help in arriving at the cause and correct diagnosis. Histopathological examination is one of the major tools in evaluation of abnormal uterine bleeding and helps us in proper management and treatment of cases.

Background: Primary endometriosis is the presence of endometrial glands and tissues outside the endometrial cavity. Primary umbilical endometriosis is a very rare entity. Case:We reported a 40-year-old Para 2 plus 2Alive 2 patient who presented with 2 year history of umbilical swelling with cyclical pain. The case was managed by simple excision and histopathological examination diagnosed it as a case of umbilical endometriosis. Conclusion: Endometriosis should be considered as a differential diagnosis in cases of any umbilical pain or swelling in women of reproductive age group.

Background. Iodine deficiency disorder is a major public health problem in Ethiopia that is more common in women of reproductive age. However, it is not well addressed and there is a lack of information on its prevalence and associated factors in women of reproductive age group. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess goiter prevalence and associated factors among women of reproductive age in the Demba Gofa woreda, Gamo Gofa Zone, Southwest Ethiopia. Methods. A community-based cross-sectional study was used among 584 randomly selected women in the reproductive age group from February 05 to April 20, 2016. A simple random sampling technique was used to select the study kebeles, and a systematic random sampling technique was used to select the study samples. Data were collected through a pretested questionnaire, and the goiter examination was done clinically for each participant. The collected data were coded and entered into a computer for statistical analysis using EpiData version 3.2 and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Variables with a P value ≤0.25 in bivariate logistic regression analysis were entered into multivariate logistic regression analysis, and finally, variables with a P value <0.05 in multivariate logistic regression were considered significantly associated with the dependent variable. Results. The total goiter rate was 43%, 95% CI = 39.2–46.9. Cassava consumption (AOR: 2.02, 95% CI: 1.03–4), salt wash before use (AOR: 3.14, 95% CI: 1.1–11.3), salt use after >2 months of purchase (AOR: 11, 95% CI: 5–26), family history of goiter (AOR: 4.6, 95% CI: 1.4–15.8), and poor knowledge of iodized salt (AOR: 2.7, 95% CI: 1.4–5.5) were significant factors associated with goiter. Conclusion. Iodine deficiency was found to be severe in women of reproductive age in the study area. This showed that women of reproductive age, especially during pregnancy, are exposed to iodine deficiency and its adverse effects at delivery. Thus, they need urgent supplementation with iodine, improved access to foods rich in iodine, and intake of iodized salt. Additionally, health education should focus on the importance of iodized salt, the proper method of use, and the prevention of iodine deficiency, which are highly recommended to minimize the problem.
