Acarosis in birds may cause irritation, stress, reduction of food intake and, consequently, reduction in egg production and quality. In this sense, the Ornithonyssus sylviarum mite is considered one of the most aggressive mites to bird health due to its permanent behavior. The objective of this work is to determine the presence of Ornithonyssus spp. in three genetic lines of pedigree breeding chickens and roosters on a farm in the state of California, USA, and identify the species of Ornithonyssus spp. present in the three genetic lines studied. A sampling of 103 pedigree chickens and roosters was carried out to determine the presence of Ornithonyssus spp. The samples were collected from the feathers under the cloaca, preserved in 70% alcohol, then rinsed with 10% sodium hydroxide and evaluated, by direct observation through the microscope and stereoscope, in order to visualize and identify their morphological characteristics. The results show the presence of Ornithonyssus spp. in 99.0% (102/103) of the birds, identifying an average of 135, 121 and 30 mites per bird according to lines A, B and C, respectively. The species identified were Ornithonyssus sylviarum, Ornithonyssus bursa and Ornithonyssus bacoti in 89.8%, 1.4% and 0.8% respectively, with 8.1% Ornithonyssus spp. In conclusion, Ornithonyssus spp. was present in the pedigree breeding chickens and roosters in the three genetic lines. Ornithonyssus sylviarum was the predominant species.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of differences in growth curve and age at photostimulation on egg production parameters and carcass traits at 61 wk of age in broiler breeder hens. Pullets were grown on one of three growth curves: STD (standard), LOW (150g lighter than STD) and HIGH (150 g heavier than STD ), and photostimulated at either 19 wk of age (19WK) or 21 wk of age (21WK). The egg production and BW of 36 birds per interaction were individually monitored from photostimulation to 61 wk of age. Individual, daily egg production records were analyzed for total, settable, and defective egg production, rate of production, sequence length, and egg weight. Eggs were incubated for determination of fertility, hatchability, and embryonic mortality parameters. All birds remaining at 61 wk of age were processed for determination of carcass and reproductive morphology. Unless otherwise stated, all significance was assessed at the P < 0.05 level.

AbstractThis study deals with the determination of new natural fibers extracted from the Corypha taliera fruit (CTF) and its characteristics were reported for the potential alternative of harmful synthetic fiber. The physical, chemical, mechanical, thermal, and morphological characteristics were investigated for CTF fibers. X-ray diffraction and chemical composition characterization ensured a higher amount of cellulose (55.1 wt%) content and crystallinity (62.5%) in the CTF fiber. The FTIR analysis ensured the different functional groups of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin present in the fiber. The Scherrer’s equation was used to determine crystallite size 1.45 nm. The mean diameter, specific density, and linear density of the CTF fiber were found (average) 131 μm, 0.86 g/cc, and 43 Tex, respectively. The maximum tensile strength was obtained 53.55 MPa for GL 20 mm and Young’s modulus 572.21 MPa for GL 30 mm. The required energy at break was recorded during the tensile strength experiment from the tensile strength tester and the average values for GL 20 mm and GL 30 mm are 0.05381 J and 0.08968 J, respectively. The thermal analysis ensured the thermal sustainability of CTF fiber up to 230 °C. Entirely the aforementioned outcomes ensured that the new CTF fiber is the expected reinforcement to the fiber-reinforced composite materials.

There is scant information about the reproductive process in broiler breeders, with which to develop a feeding strategy that will be economically optimal for these birds. This study aimed to model the egg production of a flock of broiler breeder hens, using non-isometric equations. The number of eggs produced by 60 broiler breeder hens aged 24–60 weeks was monitored, as was the weight of these eggs and the weights of the components, yolk, albumen and shell. Oviposition sequences and the number and length of pauses between sequences were analysed. Non-isometric functions were applied to predict the weight of the egg; yolk weight was predicted from the age of the hen, while albumen and shell weights were predicted from yolk weight; and egg weight was obtained by summing the component weights. The incidence of soft-shelled and double-yolk eggs was also determined. Yolk weight (YW, g) can be described as YW = 18.03 × (1 – e–0.015 × (t – 103.4)) × e(0.001 × t), where t is the age of the bird (days). The weights of albumen (AW) and shell (SW) were based on YW predictions as follows: AW = 14.38 × YW0.375 and SW = 0.358 × (YW + AW)0.687. The rate of double-yolk egg (DY) production is described by DY = 2.28 × e(0.209 × TFE), and the rate of soft-shelled egg (SS) production by SS = 1.126 + 0.148/(1 – 0.024 × TFE) – 0.056 × TFE, as a function of time from first egg (TFE). On the basis of the results obtained, the model developed here is an accurate reflection of the changes that occur in the number of eggs produced by broiler breeders, as well as in the egg itself and in its components over the entire laying period. This model can thus be used in predicting the nutrient requirements of individual broiler breeder hens, which, when combined with simulated data from a large number of individuals, will accurately describe the laying performance of a flock of broiler breeders.

Abstract Study question Is there a relationship between the serum progesterone and estradiol levels and certain morphological characteristics of human endometrium during the mid-luteal phase? Summary answer Serum progesterone is associated with the stromal edema and the abundance and size of basal vacuoles in the endometrium of women during the mid-luteal phase. What is known already Progesterone and estrogen are essential hormones that are necessary to prepare the endometrium for pregnancy. Their serum concentrations during the mid-luteal phase are important criteria for prediction of successful embryo implantation. In addition, a variety of endometrial morphological markers, such as the presence of pinopodes, subnuclear and supranuclear vacuoles, glandular secretion, and stromal edema have been applied for determination of the window of implantation and endometrial receptivity. However, the relationship between these endometrial morphological characteristics and serum levels of progesterone and estradiol is still scarcely studied. Study design, size, duration This is an observational study of 98 women, 25 to 46 years of age (mean 37 years), who had a blood sample and an endometrial biopsy during the mid-lutheal phase (LH + 7) in a natural cycle. The study was conducted between August 2020 and November 2020. Participants/materials, setting, methods Serum progesterone and estradiol were measured by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) on the Cobas e411 analyser (Roche Diagnostics, Germany). The following endometrial morphological characteristics were assessed using light microscopy: (1) basal vacuoles (mean size and percentage of vacuolated glandular cells) (2) apical vacuoles (mean size and percentage of vacuolated glandular cells), (3) pinopodes (percentage of luminal epithelium covered in pinopodes), (4) glandular intraluminal secretion (6-level scoring system), (5) stromal edema (6-level scoring system). Main results and the role of chance The serum progesterone levels ranged between 0.39 and 145.3 ng/ml, with a median of 24.36 ng/ml. The serum estradiol levels varied between 26.91 and 842.89 pg/ml with a median of 124.75 pg/ml. The percentage of cells with basal vaculoles ranged from 0 to 90%, with a median of 38.57%, apical vacuoles (0–50%, 16.83%), pinopodes (0–80%, 23.87%), glandular intraluminal secretion (0–80%, 28.57%), and stromal edema (1–6, 1.42). To examine the association between the serum progesterone and estradiol and the studied endometrial morphological characteristics, the Spearman’s Rho Correlation coefficient for non-paramentric data was used. No correlation was found between serum estradiol levels and the studied morphological variables (p > 0.05). In contrast, the serum progesterone concentration showed a significant negative correlation with the percentage of glandular epithelial cells with basal vacuoles (R= - 0.28; p = 0.03), the mean size of the basal vacuoles (R= - 0.24; p = 0.5) and a significant positive correlation with the stromal edema (R = 0.34; p < 0.01). Limitations, reasons for caution The study was limited in sample size. Wider implications of the findings: The results of this study revealed that serum progesterone is more strongly associated with the occurrence of certain endometrial morphological characteristics during the mid-luteal phase than serum estradiol. These findings are valuable for development of new methods for accurate determination of the window of implantation. Trial registration number Not applicable

The immediate effects of a sudden increase in feed allowance on selected morphological and reproductive traits were investigated in broiler breeder hens at 44 wk of age. Fifty Indian River hens were individually caged at 40 wk of age. Prior to 40 wk of age the birds had been feed restricted in accordance with the breeder's recommended feeding program. Five treatment groups (T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5) of 10 birds each were formed based on level of feeding and duration of exposure to such feeding. T1, T2 and T3 birds were feed restricted (128 g of daily feed bird−1) from 40 to 44, 40 to 45 and 40 to 46 wk of age, respectively. T4 and T5 birds were also feed restricted at the same level as the other groups to 44 wk of age and then were full fed from 44 to 45 and 44 to 46 wk of age, respectively. To facilitate study of follicular recruitment and yolk deposition, hens were fed 10 g of oil-soluble red and black dyes, daily, on alternate days, beginning at 42 wk of age. Birds were killed on day 0 (44 wk; T1), day 7 (45 wk; T2, T4), or day 14 (46 wk; T3, T5). Full-fed hens consumed approximately 100 g more feed per day than did feed-restricted hens, with marked increases in feed intake on the first day of full feeding. After 7 d of ad libitum feeding, significant increases were seen in body weight, liver weight, percent liver fat, plasma lipid concentration, ovary weight, and the incidence of a double hierarchy (simultaneous development) of large follicles. After 14 d of ad libitum feeding, significant increases were also observed in absolute fat-pad weight, individual weights of the four largest preovulatory follicles and number of large preovulatory follicles. The increased number of large follicles in the ovary was not associated with any change in egg production. It is apparent that the morphological disruptions associated with overfeeding broiler breeder hens can be identified within 7 d of full feeding, while any effects on egg production are not seen within the first 14 d of ad libitum feeding. Key words: Broiler breeder, feed intake, yolk deposition, ovarian morphology, egg production

An experiment was carried out with the objective of evaluating the addition of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25(OH) D3) in diets of broiler breeder hens. The experiment used Cobb 500 broiler breeder hens and was allotted to a complete randomized design with four treatments and eight replications of twenty females and two males each. The treatments consisted of vitamin premixes with 2,000 and 3,400 IU/kg diet vitamin D3 as the only source of vitamin or 2,000 IU D3 plus 35 or 69 mg/t of 25(OH) D3. Results of this experiment indicated that 25(OH) D3 had no significant effect on egg production parameters from 32 to 67 weeks. The supplementation of 25(OH) D3 resulted in better quality egg shells evaluated by the specific gravity at 60 weeks of age, regardless of the dosage. No significant differences were observed for hatchability of broiler breeder fertile eggs at 54 and 64 weeks. At 64 weeks, the hatch residue breakout showed less embryo mortality at the third week for treatments receiving 2,000 UI D3 in the diet and less embryo mortality at the second week of development from hens aged 67 weeks and supplemented with 2,000IU D3 and 2,000IU D3+ 69 mg 25(OH)D3. It was concluded that the supplementation with 25-hydroxycholecalciferol with cholecalciferol had similar effects as the diets with vitamin D3 as the only source on the productive performance of broiler breeder hens.

Data on the monthly egg production of a strain of Rhode Island chickens (500 breeder hens) were used to test the goodness of fit of six mathematical models, viz; Exponential, Parabolic exponential, Wood's Gamma type and modified Gamma type by McNally, Inverse polynomial and Linear regression. Egg production was summarized for each hen into 28-d periods, starting from the day of firts egg. The hens were classified into different production cycle length based on the number of 28-d periods. The models were fitted to the mean results obtained for periods within groups of hens. The effect of cycle length on goodness of fit was also examined separately for the 'best' three models with highest R2 values. The egg production cycle (i.e. number of 28-d periods) varied from 9 to 15 periods. Similarly, the coefficients of determination (R2) varied from 0.16 to 0.95 from fitting the models to mean egg production data for groups of hens. The results suggest that thye 'best' three models that were chosen fitted 52 week laying records quite well, judging from their respective R2, which were higherf for McNally (0.95) and Parabolic exponential (0.93) than for wood (0.75). Based on the goodness of fit to 52-week production record, the McNally model gave the best results. However, its suitability in predicting full year production from part year record needs to be further investigated.

AbstractThis research aims to study the vulnerability to soil erosion of the contact zone of the sandstone Formation Caiuá with basalt of the Serra Geral Formation, in the municipality of Araruna, Paraná Northwest Region, giving focus to the role of the stability of the current structure of soils, considering the changes produced by the forms of use and occupation of the area. The analysis also considered variations of morphological characteristics of soils in profile and along the lithosactivity (pedological system), as well as your reflexes in the generation of sectors more or less susceptible to erosion in the shed. For the survey of the soils along the strand, the procedures proposed by the Structural Analysis of the Pedological Coverage and the collection of samples for the determination of the granulometry and stability of aggregates were used. The results indicated the action of the lateral and vertical water flows, acting on the transformation of the soil horizons along the slope and a variation of the structural stability associated with the morphological characteristics of the soils and the type of use and management used. The Argisols presented small aggregates and a textural gradient between the surface and subsurface horizon, giving it a strong susceptibility to erosion. The Nitossolo did not show great differentiation in the size of the aggregates, except in the Bw horizon, where the reduction in the size of the aggregates was associated to the morphological change of the soil structure. Keywords: structural analysis of the soil cover, stability of aggregates, susceptibility to erosion, pedological systems.

With the evolution of cultivation techniques, the world production of fruits and vegetables has been presenting a continuous growth. Despite the increase in production, a significant portion of the harvested products is mainly lost in the post-harvest due to several factors, such as inapropriate handling, transportation and conservation, lack of selection and classification, poorly sized packaging, among others. In general, the quality of fruits and vegetables is usually evaluated by the following parameters: size, shape, mass, color, firmness, ripeness, absence of bruises and pathologies. The objective of this work was to develop an application in Matlab to detect morphological characteristics (width, length, area, perimeter) of Mangifera indica L., ‘Tommy Atkins’ mangos from images, and using the same images, estimate its weigth. The images of the mangoes were acquired with a digital camera attached to an illuminated box and later processed in an application developed in Matlab. The images showed the morphological characteristics of the samples were obtained and an equation was determined to estimate their mass. The determination of the mass from the images had a 96% correlation with the actual mass measured with a scale and it was possible to obtain a reliable estimate of the masses of the mangoes from their images.
