Information Technologies (ICT) have developed systems and network organizations that foster the creation of resources for company management. The establishment of strategic alliances and business cooperation systems has been encouraged by ICT and information systems management. This focus on organization and strategic knowledge management shows the capabilities they provide in managing organizations’ intangible assets, information and knowledge, since they are a competitive advantage. Network organizations, intercompany systems, cooperation, and alliances with the support of ICT are the paths to enterprises growth and development.

Current worldwide economy conditions cause increasing popularity of collaborative business networks. Dealing with multiple organizations and multiple processes within a complicated network, identifying and locating a member that has a responsibility and/or a competence in a particular part of the network can be a laborious, time-consuming process. Knowledge management technology is aimed to assist in solving this problem. It requires intelligent interoperability support between information systems of collaborative network members. A presented approach is based on the context management technology. It allows allows describing the collaborative network at a particular moment. The context includes such current situation properties as time, location, competence profiles of collaborative network members, etc. The competence profiles allow formalizing and sharing member's knowledge and competencies.

Learning faster is important in personal competitive advantage. However, to accelerate a group of people's learning efficiency is more complicated than individual practice. Learning efficiency is highlighting research in information systems change management as well as knowledge management. In practice, knowledge is difficult to manage directly. On the other hand, managing knowledge behaviors can achieve knowledge management. A teamwork structure is a micro-social system and internal collaboration network. Therefore, different teamwork structures conduct different knowledge behaviors. Social influence theories provide an interpretation that different social proximity distinguish contagion effects. This study applies the social network perspective to explore the knowledge behaviors of computer software developers. Therefore, the finding of this study shows that controlling network redundancy can enhance knowledge diffusion efficiency. Furthermore, if team fails to manage knowledge diffusion, they will offset the timing of competitive advantage in technological upgrade. Based on this finding, this study suggests a new thinking for implementation of information systems, change management, and strategic planning.

Community (Gemeinschaft in German) has emerged as a relevant concept for understanding the social dimension of human life, at the end of nineteenth century, when in a famous book by Ferdinand Toennies (1925), it was opposed to society (Gesellschaft in German). The debate that accompanied and followed Toennies’ book at the beginning of the twentieth century opposed the irrationality of communities (where no utility value justifies membership) to the rational principle sustaining societies (that are ruled in order to balance costs and benefits of all members). More recently, the concept of community has been again at the center of philosophical debate after its deconstruction by Jean Luc Nancy: it is, therefore, interesting to situate the concept of community of practice within it. What emerges from this analysis offers to designers of ICT-based applications, such as information systems, knowledge management systems, etc., some new hints on the nature of those systems.

Knowledge management is a fundamental capability in today’s evolving markets. Management needs to understand which organizational processes are necessary to trigger each of the stages in knowledge development. The objective of this study is to outline the main concepts and stages in the process of knowledge development in organizations and the organizational activities that have a positive influence on those stages. A conceptual framework is proposed which combines the model of knowledge development proposed by Nonaka (1994) with the concepts of exploration and exploitation initially described by March (1991). Information systems are seen to play a fundamental role in supporting this process, especially in activities related to exploitation capability.

A stage model for knowledge management systems in policing financial crime is developed in this chapter. Stages of growth models enable identification of organizational maturity and direction. Information technology to support knowledge work of police officers is improving. For example, new information systems supporting police investigations are evolving. Police investigation is an information-rich and knowledge-intensive practice. Its success depends on turning information into evidence. This chapter presents an organizing framework for knowledge management systems in policing financial crime. Future case studies will empirically have to illustrate and validate the stage hypothesis developed in this paper.

Nowadays, increasing information in enterprises demands new ways of searching and connecting the existing information systems. This chapter describes an approach for the integration of structured and unstructured data focusing on the application to Data Warehousing (DW) and Knowledge Management (KM). Semantic integration is used to improve the interoperability between two well-known and established information systems in the business context of nowadays enterprises. The objective is to introduce a semantic solution in the field of Business Intelligence based on ontology integration. The main focus of this chapter is not to provide a complete literature review of all existing approaches or just to point put the motivation for such an approach. In fact, it presents, under consideration of the most important research approaches, a solution for how a Semantic Integration could be technically achieved in this specific application area. After pointing out the motivation, a short introduction to Semantic Integration, the problems and challenges occurring from it, and the application area of Knowledge Management and Data Warehousing are given. Besides the basic ideas of ontologies and ontology integration are introduced. The approach itself starts with a short overview on the determined requirements, followed by a concept for generating an ontology from a Data Warehouse System (DWS) to be finally integrated with Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) ontology. Finally SENAGATOR, an exemplarily system for semantic navigation based on integrated ontologies, is shortly introduced.

In the last decade a new generation of information systems (ISs), such as Web-based information systems and knowledge management support systems, have emerged in response to ever-changing organizational needs. Therefore, the need for new “Information System Design Theories” for the emerging ISs is recognized. According to Walls, Widmeyer, and El-Sawy (1992), an “IS design theory” must have two aspects?one dealing with the description of the system and one dealing with the prescription, that is, the process of developing of the system. The prescription aspect includes a description of procedures and guidelines for system development. In addition, these two aspects must be grounded on theories from natural or social sciences (i.e., kernel theories). As information systems are socio-technical phenomena in which social and technical factors interweave the ways in which people work, the issue of “how to integrate the work activity and social context of users into the IS which is being designed” becomes one of the principal problems of IS development (Bai & Lindberg, 1999). Therefore, the development of new IS design theories requires a closer look at the system theories that go beyond the traditional system theory that is based, among other things, on Cartesian dualism (i.e., mind/body or cognition/action) and on a model of cognition as the processing of representational information (Mingers, 2001). One of the candidate theories is the theory of autopoiesis, which can be best viewed as a system-grounded way of thinking with biological foundations, together with its extension into social domain.
