Ayurveda, The science of life, since its origin is serving the mankind throughout in health & disease state of life. Shalakyatantra, one of its specialized branch deals with the science of Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Orodental surgery & Head; was contributed and developed by Rajrishi Nimi, the King of Videha, who was a colleague of Atreya, Punarvasu, Dhanwantri, Bharadwaja, Kashyapa etc. The available literature related to this speciality is reproduced from original text of Nimitantra in Uttartantra of Sushruta samhita. Correlation of Tritiya Patalagata kach with modern science is varies according to different authors, but according to some it can be correlated with different stages of senile immature cataract after considering the signs and symptoms and histological changes in the lens.One of the oldest concepts is that precipitation, denaturation, coagulation or agglutination of soluble lens protein is responsible for lens opacification. Accordingly after considering signs and  symptoms, here correlating Kaphaja kach with Senile Immature Cataract. Senile immature Cataract is also called as age related Cataract. It is one of the major causes for the age related visual impairment and blindness. It affects 11.5- to 15.5 million persons worldwide. At certain age of life, opacification of lens starts in everyone’s eye which leads to gradual diminished vision or loss of vision. which means gradual opacification leads to cataract. According to modern science, senile immature cataract can be correlated with kaphaja kach. In modern science surgery is the only treatment available in cataract. In Ayurveda our Acharyas have mentioned various procedures like anjana, aschotana, pariseka, tarpana to delay kach or arrest the procedure of opacification. which can be useful in senile immature cataract.

Abhishyanda is one of the Sarvagata Vyadhi mentioned by Acharya Sushruta. In modern science, signs and symptoms of Netrabhishyanda may be correlated with conjunctivitis, which is the inflammatory condition of conjunctiva. Kavala Dharana, Dhumrapana, Aschyotana, Sechana Putapaka etc. are various suggested regimens in Ayurvedic texts for the treatment of Netrabhishyanda. Considering this effectiveness of Palasha as mentioned by Acharya Sushruta, it is planned to study the use of Palasha Mula Arka Aschyotana in Pittaja Netrabhishyanda. 60 patients having classical signs and symptoms of Pittaja Abhishyanda (Acute Bacterial Conjunctivitis) as per Ayurvedic and modern texts were selected for the study. After completion of therapy, mean Conjunctival hyperemia was reduced to 0.2167 ± 0.4086 in Control and 0.5667 ± 0.5040 in Trial Group. Palasha Mula Arka was found effective in reduction in conjunctival hyperemia, watering and the number of culture colonies, it was also found effective in burning sensation, discharge, foreign body sensation and photophobia.

Objetivos: Verificar os conhecimentos e ações desenvolvidas por professores que atuam com alunos do ensino fundamental em relação aos sinais e sintomas indicativos de dificuldades visuais, analisando suas condutas diante do problema. Materiais e métodos: Realizou-se levantamento entre professores da primeira série do ensino fundamental de escolas públicas, estaduais e municipais, do município de Itajubá - MG, no ano letivo de 2013. Foi utilizado questionário autoaplicável como instrumento de coleta de dados. Resultados e discussão: Todos os 21 professores de escolas públicas responderam o questionário. A média de idade foi de 40,9 anos e a média de magistério, de 20,3 anos. Quanto à formação profissional, a maioria não apresenta capacitação na área (90,5%). Em relação aos sinais e sintomas de dificuldade visual, os mais indicados foram dificuldade para ler na lousa (100%), dor de cabeça (95,2%), franzir a testa (90,5%) e aproximação exagerada de objetos e livros (90,5%). Dentre os professores, 80,9% indicaram ter tido algum aluno com dificuldade visual no último ano, enquanto 19,1% não suspeitaram. Entre os professores que indicaram ter algum aluno com dificuldade visual, 88,2% tiveram como conduta orientar os pais, 70,6% orientou procurar um oftalmologista, 58,8% orientaram a direção e somente 23,5%, orientaram o aluno. Conclusão: Apesar dos professores apresentarem algum conhecimento sobre a saúde ocular, estes ainda são insuficientes e suas ações são incompletas.  Palavras-chave: Promoção de saúde; acuidade visual; saúde escolar.    ABSTRACT Objectives: The study aims to determine the knowledge and actions developed by teachers working with elementary students for signs and symptoms which may show visual difficulties, analyzing the behaviors of teachers on the issue. Methods: We conducted a survey among first grade teachers of public state and city schools, in the city of Itajubá - MG, in the year of 2013. Self-administered questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection. Results and discussion: All the 21 public school teachers answered the questionnaire. The average age of teachers was 40.9, whereas the average was teaching experience was 20.3 years. As for training the majority has no training in the area (90.5%). Regarding the signs and symptoms of visual impairment, the nominees were: more difficulty reading the blackboard (100%), headache (95.2%), frown (90.5%) and too close to objects and books (90.5%). Among the teachers 80.9% of them indicated that they had some students with visual impairment last year, while 19.1% did not suspect. The conduct showed that among teachers who reported having a student with visual impairment, 88.2% oriented parents, 70.6% seek guidance ophthalmologist, 58.8% oriented direction and only 23.5% have guided the student. Conclusion: Although teachers present some knowledge about eye health, it is still insufficient and their actions are incomplete.  Keywords: Promoting health, visual accuracy, school health.

Cerium oxide nanoparticles (nanoceria) are generally known for their recyclable antioxidative properties making them an appealing biomaterial for protecting against physiological and pathological age-related changes that are caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Cataract is one such pathology that has been associated with oxidation and glycation of the lens proteins (crystallins) leading to aggregation and opacification. A novel coated nanoceria formulation has been previously shown to enter the human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) and protect them from oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). In this work, the mechanism of nanoceria uptake in HLECs is studied and multiple anti-cataractogenic properties are assessed in vitro. Our results show that the nanoceria provide multiple beneficial actions to delay cataract progression by (1) acting as a catalase mimetic in cells with inhibited catalase, (2) improving reduced to oxidised glutathione ratio (GSH/GSSG) in HLECs, and (3) inhibiting the non-enzymatic glucose-induced glycation of the chaperone lens protein α-crystallin. Given the multifactorial nature of cataract progression, the varied actions of nanoceria render them promising candidates for potential non-surgical therapeutic treatment.

Personality, trauma, research last 20 years showed that people in crisis are not only injured, suffering, but able to resist, withstand also solves life problems: not only adapt, but take courage to overcome difficulties, to love, to work, to construct, to let personality grow? Theoretically described in activity-meaning approach, focusing on positive aspects of extreme situation and meaning personality work with a traumatic experience (M. Magomed-Eminov, 1990, 2009) so that demonstrate resilience, coping, overcoming and hardiness. The study was aimed at identifying resistance in extreme situations by the comparative analysis of discourses of people with normal vision and impaired people with its various etiologies (blind from birth and have lost their vision due to injury). We tested manifestation of resistance in people with visual impairment (congenital or acquired as a result of injury), and sighted by a "Test of hardiness" (S. Maddi) and developed life situation interview. The sample (90 people) of three groups: 1) with intact vision, 2) loss of vision due to trauma, 3) with congenital visual impairment. The overall level of viability, control and risk taking). The third group demonstrated the highest score of hardiness. Comparative analysis showed statistically significant differences in these parameters between people with congenital impairment and two other groups, differences between people who lost vision due to trauma, and sighted are not significant. Qualitative analysis of crises experience showed that in traumatic loss the fact of blindness becomes one of the central problems in life experience and possibility of positive transformation and integration is less probable because loss of vision “completely changed their lives, former life meaning”. People with congenital visual impairment, showing similarities with sighted in allocation of types of loss and crisis situations (loss of a loved one, family breakdown, etc. ), but in description of effects and what they do with experience - more active and positive view on situation, future perspective and own efforts to overcome difficulties, to care of others, fulfill personality work which actually makes it possible to transform the hardiness into resilience, positive outcome of the disaster.

The aim of the chapter is to review the most recent advances in electro-optical technologies applied to visually disabled people. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the number of people in the world with some kind of visual impairment is 285 million, with 246 million of these persons in a partially sighted or Low Vision (LV) condition. The top three causes of visual impairment are uncorrected refractive errors, cataracts and glaucoma, followed by age-related macular degeneration. On the other hand, Head Mounted Displays or electro-optical materials used in liquid crystal or electrochromic devices can be used in technical aids for LV. In this chapter, the authors review how disabled people receive real world information using these new technologies, how the recently developed electro-optical technical aids can improve visual perception, and how these LV aids do work, from a technological point of view.
