A New Approach to the Theory of Rubberlike Elasticity
Keyword(s):
Abstract It has been shown that for a simple hypothetical model substance, containing like independent systems, each capable of existing in two alternative orientations, stress-strain curves may be computed which are similar in form to those ordinarily obtained from rubber and rubberlike materials, provided one introduces a certain dependence of the volume shift per rearrangement on the elongation. With this model, the dependence of the initial elastic modulus and that of the shape of the stress-strain curve on various characteristics of the rearranging systems are readily studied. More detailed comparison of these theoretical results with experimental data and with other theoretical treatments will be postponed until a later date.
