A study was conducted to investigate the effects of invasive weed Ageratina adenophora on the seed germination and seedling growth of Triticum aestivum, Brassica campestris and on weeds Ageratum conyzoides, Bidens pilosa, Galinsoga parviflora and Cyperus rotundus. The aqueous extracts of Ageratina plant’s part root, stem and leaf; and compost extract of Ageratina on different concentrations (control, 1, 2.5, 5 and 10%) were used to determine its effect on the seed germination, shoot and root length of Triticum aestivum, Brassica campestris and some common weed seeds under laboratory condition. The compost of A. adenophora at different doses viz. 0, 10, 20, 40 and 50g compost/kg soil was also applied to study the effect on the seed germination and seedling growth of B. campestris and T. aestivum and some weed seeds. The aqueous and compost extracts of Ageratina caused significant reduction in the seed germination and seedling length (shoot and root) which increased progressively on increasing the concentration of invasive plant's extract. The stem and leaf extracts of A. adenophora have more inhibitory effect on the germination percentage of winter crops as compared to root extract on the test crop seeds under study. The study aimed to evaluate the use of germination indices as a screening tool for salinity tolerance during germination and early seedling growth of pepper cultivars, and to distinguish the potential for genetic responses to salt tolerance. In the study, the seeds of seven pepper cultivars were germinated at increasing NaCl levels of 5, 10, 15 and 20 dS/m and distilled water as the control treatment for 14 days. Germination percentage (GP), mean germination time (MGT), germination index (GI), germination stress tolerance index (GSTI), seedling length (SL), seedling fresh weight (SFW) and vigor index (VI) were investigated. Results showed that germination percentage decreased with increasing NaCl levels while the highest germination percentage at 20 dS/m was 92% in BT Burdem with no significant reduction. Seedling growth of pepper cultivars was severely inhibited by increasing salinity stress. SFW was depressed depending on reduction in SL due to increasing NaCl. BT-Burli and BT İnce Sivri were the most tolerant cultivars to NaCl and they were used for genetic resources towards salinity. Seedling growth was much more sensitive to salinity than germination because of the highest percent reduction in seedling growth parameters. Among the parameters, GSTI gave the highest significant correlation coefficient with SL and SFW; indicating that it would be useful for estimating seedling growth. It was concluded that genotypic variation was observed among pepper cultivars for salinity tolerance and GSTI could be used for a predictor for salinity tolerance.

The chemical compounds have been reported to be exuded by plants and their inhibitory effects of other plants. The research work was carried out to study the allelopathic effect of root, bark and leaf extracts of Azadirachta indica L. on the seed germination of Abelmoschus esculentus L. Germination studies were conducted in laboratory, the bhendi seeds treated with the root, bark and leaf extracts of Neem. On the seventh day the morphological parameters, photosynthetic pigment and biochemical contents were analysed. The result showed that the rate of germination of bhendi decreased in all Azadirachta indica L. extracts. The reduction in biochemical contents of bhendi was also noted. The highest rate of germination was observed in control (distilled water) treatment and the highest rate of inhibition was observed in root extract followed by bark and leaf extracts.

We investigated the autotoxicity of Lanzhou lily rhizosphere soil with different cultivation years. The allelochemicals in such soils were isolated and identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Based on our earlier studies, the antioxidant 2246 and dioctyl terephthalate were found in lily sick soil were used in pot experiments determine to their autotoxic effects on the Lanzhou lily seedlings growth, photosynthetic parameters and antioxidant enzyme activities in seedling leaves. The content of antioxidant 2246 and dioctyl terephthalate was determined by GC-MS in rhizosphere soil of different cultivation years. The aqueous extracts of Lanzhou lily rhizosphere soil promoted the growth of its own seedlings at 0.2 mg·mL-1, however, the concentrations > 2 mg·mL-1 were inhibitory. The longer the cultivation period (1-yr, 2-yr and 4-yr), the stronger were the inhibitory effects. In rhizosphere soils of 1-yr, 2-yr and 4-yr ; 8,: 15 and 18 compounds were identified, respectively. The identified compounds were camphor, 3-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzaldehyde, 2,4-bis(1,1- dimethylethyl)-phenol, tributyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, antioxidant 2246 and dioctyl terephthalater and these are reported as allelochemicals. The pot experiment results showed that low concentrations of antioxidant 2246 stimulated the seedling growth but high concentrations were inhibitory, while all concentrations of dioctyl terephthalater inhibited the seedling growth. At 100 mg·mL-1, the antioxidant 2246 and dioctyl terephthalate significantly inhibited the photosynthesis and antioxidant enzyme activity in leaves (P <0.05). Furthermore, the content of these two compounds in soils increased with the increase of cultivation years. These results suggested that allelochemicals accumulated in replanted soil contributed to the autotoxicity of Lanzhou lily in rhizosphere soil.

Paddy (Oryza sativa L. var. Taiching-127) fields of Kirtipur, central Nepal, were studied to evaluate the effects of weeds on crop yield during June to October 2003. Weed community was recorded in permanently marked plots (2 x 2 m2 each), and grain and straw yields were measured. The effect of aqueous extracts (2 to 10%) of leaf, stem and root of dominant weeds (Echinochloa colona, E. crusgalli, Cyperus iria and Ageratum conyzoides) on germination and seedling growth of the paddy (Taiching-127) was examined in the laboratory. Altogether 52 weed species (27 dicot and 25 monocot) belonging to 32 genera and 15 families infested the paddy. The maximum weed density was observed in September (105 pl/m2). There was significant reduction in straw and grain yield of paddy in weedy plots and negative correlation between weed species richness and straw yield. Crop weed competition reduced straw yield by 13% to 38% and grain yield by 25% to 47%. Weed growth changed pH and reduced soil nitrogen and phosphorus content. Aqueous extracts of root, stem and leaf of dominant weeds (Echinochloa colona, E. crus-galli, Cyperus iria and Ageratum conyzoides) showed a weak effect on seeds germination however most of them had inhibitory effect on root and shoot elongation of paddy seedlings. Root elongation was more sensitive to allelopathic inhibition than shoot elongation. Stem extract of these weeds showed higher inhibition on seedling growth of paddy than leaf and root extract except in Ageratum conyzoides in which root extract showed highest inhibition.
