This study aimed at revealing the role of digital libraries in enhancing the knowledge economy in Jordanian universities. To achieve this objective, the study instrument was constructed exemplified with a questionnaire, where the sample consisted of (19) items in final form. Having verified their validity and reliability, they were applied to a random sample of 370 students from three universities, namely: Yarmouk, Jordan University of Science and Technology and Al Albayt University in the northern region of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. After applying the study instrument to the sample, the data were entered into SPSS programs for analysis, as the results revealed that there is an intermediate role for digital libraries in enhancing knowledge economies. On the other hand, the results revealed that there are no statistically significant differences due to gender and college variables in the role of Jordanian digital libraries in enhancing the knowledge economy in Jordanian universities from the students’ perspectives. In light of the previous results, the researcher recommended the need to raise awareness about the significance of digital libraries in enhancing the knowledge economy. He also recommended that more studies be conducted on this subject through the application of other segments and comparing the results to achieve an integrated vision of the role of digital libraries in the service of knowledge economies.

In today??s knowledge society it is important to keep people informed about emerging technological developments while at the same time providing an accurate scientific and historical framework for such novelties in order to contribute to eradicate existing misconceptions. Dissemination of science and technology is presently essential to convey information within the research communities as well as among the younger generations and the general public. This paper describes two initiatives which pursue this objective by using multimedia tools. One consists in a set of 250 one-minute programs about engineering topics which were broadcast on TV, radio and the multimedia online platform of a daily journal. The other is a collection of videos produced by a research unit in two alternative formats aimed at specialist and general viewers. Both initiatives, based on two very different budgets, may be instrumental for improving the general perception of the role of engineering and for attracting new vocations. The multimedia contents developed are also valuable teaching tools.

The role of science and technology in the First Industrial Revolution is still contested. Some scholars, focusing on the textiles sector, argue that skilled and talented artisans with no scientific training were mainly responsible for the key inventions; others, with steam power in mind, hold that the links between science and the crucial inventions of the period were fundamental. Margaret Jacob has been a leading contributor to the debate for nearly four decades. The publication of her The First Knowledge Economy offers an opportunity to review the issues. In the digital era knowledge and information are becoming more and more online accessible. In this perspective, libraries have a vital function in respect of copyright protection and accessibility to knowledge. On the one hand, web services are facilitating flow of information and access to knowledge; on the other hand, Internet moots questions regarding copyrights protection. The main purpose of linking is the creation of the World Wide Web as a thesaurus of knowledge and information. Nevertheless, digitization projects on an international level are already experiencing conversely issues, mainly because of copyright. Purpose of this chapter is to discuss some of these issues deriving from the linking, particularly for digital libraries. What is the relation between the scope of digital libraries on the one hand and of copyright on the other one? What is the role of the various stakeholders, i.e. the libraries and the right holders?

A process of normative change in academic science makes spin-off entrepreneurship compatible with the advancement of knowledge. A parallel process of normative change in industrial science produces a creative tension between organizational and scientific goals that enhances the attainment of both objectives. The creation of hybrid organizations mediating between university–industry and university–government brings these institutional spheres into closer contiguity. The emergence of triadic interactions and ‘taking the role of the other’ among university–industry–government in the transition from an industrial to a knowledge economy may be seen as a conscious innovative stream rather than a chance evolutionary event.

Much has been written about the claim that contemporary developed economies are ‘knowledge economies’ in which education plays a key role in providing the human, knowledge-based resources necessary for success. David & Foray's article (2003) provides a useful survey, both of the most general features of what have come to be called ‘knowledge economies’, but also of some important issues that affect their development. In this article the author concentrates on the concept of a knowledge economy and its relationship with that of education. Of particular concern is the distinction between different kinds of knowledge, with a particular focus on applied theoretical knowledge and the concept of social capital. The author examines the connection between the development and support of applied theoretical knowledge and the maintenance of social capital. The article concludes with some thoughts on the implications of this connection for the role of education within a ‘knowledge economy’.

Abstract: Brazil is the world’s second-largest producer of soybeans and the largest exporter. Despite the growing importance in the international market in the last harvests, activities related to this product threaten this position. Due to its economic importance for the country, this study aims to identify the competitiveness drivers of soybean destined for the international market and to measure their impacts on the export process. Therefore, the used methodology considers the systemic character of different factors that affect the supply chain positively or negatively. As a result, the logistics infrastructure dimension was the only competitiveness driver classified as unfavorable among the analyzed factors. The advances in agribusiness are being subsequently followed by some sectors of the economy such as science and technology. On the other hand, the logistics sector has not been showing the same development, causing some weaknesses to persist, either due to the lack of infrastructure of transport production, or the inability to properly store the national harvest. The current challenge for the State is to ensure the maintenance of the quality of the infrastructure already installed and to promote an environment capable of attracting private capital and a new investment cycle.
